Welcome back, you've been away so long I don't know who the hell you are. :)

Saw is a pretty good film. But I don't really like it's sequels.

Oooh, and both Grindhouse Movies.

alkytrio666 06-13-2008 07:03 AM

The Descent.

tonemeister 06-13-2008 07:18 AM

i agree with the descent. also really enjoyed the mist and exorcism of emily rose.......

The_Return 06-13-2008 10:21 AM

Devil's Rejects would be way up there, as would The Mist.

A lot of people don't count it as horror (myself included), but Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet St. has to get a honorable mention.

...........

Fido, Hatchet, 30 Days of Night, others that have already been mentioned here.

I just watched Otis. That was cool.

Geddy 06-14-2008 12:09 PM

My top three of the past five years are: Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon, The Mist, and The Descent.

Zero 06-14-2008 12:14 PM

The Descent - definitely

i kind of liked The Exorcism of Emily Rose (even though it was PG and thus had the cleanest mouthed demon in history)

ChronoGrl 06-14-2008 12:58 PM

I thought that Emily Rose was ridiculously disappointing...

...

  • Fido

  • Shutter (2004)
  • Dead Birds
  • May
  • Altered

How in God's name did I forget about that one? One of the coolest slasher movies EVER, not just of the last few years.

Disease 06-14-2008 05:15 PM

The Descent it is then. it takes the prize and asks the question, why did we get Doomsday as a follow up?

colubrid660 06-14-2008 06:12 PM

Behind the Mask
The Descent
Feast
Cloverfield
Slither

It seems that the most popular recent horror films are either torture porn or horror/comedy. Feast is freaking hilarious.

Zero 06-14-2008 07:34 PM

i was disappointed in Behind the Mask - but i just watched Funny Games, which i thought was great!

I was disappointed in Funny Games, I thought a few of the little moments were just too much. I was especially disappointed with the remote scene because it really seemed like an unnecessary addition to a movie trying to make a point about violence in cinema and the voyeuristic "thrill" some people get from it. I'll watch it again, but I was expecting so much more from the hype.

Disease 06-14-2008 11:22 PM

So had either of you, Zero or Despare seen the Origanal?

Or what version was it you both watched?

roshiq 06-15-2008 03:42 AM

  • TCM: The Beginning
  • TCM (2003)
  • SAW
  • REC.
  • Inside
  • The Orphanage
  • Mother of Tears: The 3rd mother
  • The Hills have Eyes (2006)
  • 28 weeks later
  • Dead Silence

urgeok2 06-15-2008 05:22 AM

- [rec]
- fido
- Feast
- Cloverfield
- The Grudge
- Rambo (for sheer blood and guts - beat most horror movies in the last 30 years)
- nightwatch
- daywatch

I went into it with very VERY low expectations, so that's probably why it impressed me. Then again, I thought that the writing was brilliant and so was the acting. It was interesting to see an Alien movie that created believable and intense character development...

I, too was exceedingly disappointed in Behind the Mask. I thought that the horror deconstruction was brilliant, well thought out and well put. HOWEVER, the actual horror part of the movie was just, well, silly. I didn't consider him a believable threat at all. I was more interested in the deconstruction and cameos. Also, it was the first time that I had heard "Ahab" in that context and was impressed with the verbiage and analysis. But as a horror movie, I thought it failed.

...

I actually have Funny Games (the original) at home from Netflix... I REALLY need to watch it. I refuse to watch the remake before watching the original.

Zero 06-15-2008 07:48 AM

the original is probably a bit better - though i really liked naomi watts in the remake - she is a great actress. tim roth was a bit of nothing (though so is the character)

i'm going to watch The Last Winter tonight - the cover says it was 'the scariest movie of the year' - though i've seen that before. its directed by the guy who did Wendigo - which i sort of liked - so we'll see

phantomstranger 06-15-2008 12:33 PM

The Descent
Planet Terror

I'm excited to get my hands on The Last Winter. Netflix gets it in July and it's already in my queue...

Just watched the original Funny Games... And, well, dunno... My boyfriend called it "pretentious," which I can definitely see. I was annoyed by the occasional breaking of the 4th wall which I thought was completely unnecessary... But it wasn't too bad... I want to see the remake, though, because I'm curious as to how it was adapted; do we still break down the 4th wall? Or not?

Zero 06-15-2008 06:19 PM

just watched Last Winter - lots of atmosphere but not outstanding

i liked the breaking the 4th wall in FG - i also loved the slow pace and great shot composition

I agree that the direction was phenomenal... I want to see his other films now. Have you seen any others? I guess I just thought that the deconstruction made it a little uneven.
