Comic Book Themed Draft (Help Needed)

I need all the HDC comic fans help!

I am participating in a Comic Book Hero Draft and I need to come up with a theme for my team but I am stumped. If you are unfamiliar with a draft it is like this. You get a team of five characters and you make an idea for a team and then write up a story for them and the people participating vote on the most creative.

You need to draft the following:

1 Marvel Character
1 DC Character
1 Independent Hero (Vertigo, Wildstorm, and Icon count as independent companies.)
And then two others of our choice.

So what would you do?

I put this in the comic thread but I am not sure if many people look at that so I just put it here for now. You may move it later if need be.

Thanks so much for the help.

Rayne 05-01-2008 07:38 AM

Old, new, or any?

GorePhobia 05-01-2008 07:41 AM

It can be alive, dead, old, new, any character who was a Hero. (Or an Anti-Hero such as Batman or something along those lines.)

EDIT: If it was a form of a comic book it can also be drafted. Just need proof of the comics existence.

Oh...Just heroes?...So, where would Venom stand? (I mean, you can't use him because he's not a hero?)...Cuz, that sux :p

And...Is Image Comics considered independent?

bloody_ribcut 05-01-2008 07:48 AM

GorePhobia 05-01-2008 07:50 AM

I'm not sure if Image Comics is considered Independent. I am sure it probably is.

Venom would be a villain.

Heroes are the ones that fight crime. lol

For example: Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Punisher.

People like that even if they act as a vigilante they are still an Anti-Hero who is able to be drafted.

Here are the exact rules on the Draft from where I am participating in this.

Quote:

Okay this is the Comic book Hero draft. Yes. HERO Draft.
That includes Anti-Heroes, from Lobo to Batman.

Sign ups:
Sign ups will be open for 48 hours, This allows anyone who wants to sign up, the opportunity to do so, Irregardless of timezones or otherwise. Once this time is over I will not be allowing any additions to the roster of players.

Drafting order:
Once Sign ups are complete, I will Randomly determine draft order by names out of a hat or some other form of receptacle.

Drafting information:
The Draft will be taking the form of the now all too familiar five round snake draft

Round 1: 1 to ??
Round 2: ?? to 1
Round 3: 1 to ??
Round 4: ?? to 1
Round 5: 1 to ??

Each drafter will have 12 hours in order to make their selections. Please I ask, do not complain or harry people if they don't draft quickly, spend the time between picks talking about the subject matter. This draft is partly about celebrate comics and getting people to check out stuff they haven't before.

Should a drafter miss a round, they only have 6 hours to make their pick in the next round. If they miss two drafts in a row, then they will be disqualified. If someone misses a round and are not disqualified then they will be able to fill the remaining positions on their team after the Fifth Round has concluded, in a 24 hour “First come, first served” Free For All.

Rules and Restrictions

Team Make up

Each team must contain:
One Marvel Hero
One DC Hero
One Independent Hero (Vertigo, Wildstorm, and Icon count as independent companies.)
any 2 others of your choice.

There can be only One
Those of you familiar with last comic draft will remember this Rule. This is the rule that states that there can only be one character with the same “Source of powers” any type in play at once. Once Someone drafts a Green Lantern no other Green Lantern can be drafted. How ever this does not exclude Ion, Alan Scott or Lanterns from the Other Corps. (Though I'm not sure the other Corps Can qualifies as Heroes. But If you can convince me... more power to you.). However if you find someone with the same power source, but a different name. For example “The Flash” and “Impulse” that is Fair Game. Now it has come up before that technically all the GL have different names, but I'm going to have to apply it in their case. (and yes, no matter what “earth” you draft Superman From, that precludes ALL superman variants.) to Quote Will in the last draft “This will force us all to think a bit harder when drafting our teams and allow us to draft teams that are truly unique.“

Which characters are eligible?
All Comic Book HEROES Are eligible. Alive, Dead.. trapped in an alternate dimension.. or even from other realities/earths. If you foresee a problem with a pick you want to make, PM me. We'll talk it out. (If you can convince me, you're good to go.) If you have a question over another players pick that has not been pre-approved, Feel free to bring it up in the thread. If it is serious enough, I will pause the clock and render a decision when possible.

There will be only I calling the shots here. I'm not playing and I'm impartial. I may consult people for advice but the ruling will ultimately be mine.

Since I am working, there are enough people in the draft that have my contact Info that I am going to make them my liaisons. If I'm not around, and a problem arises, they'll let me know.
They are Drena, Adam and Gavin. They will not render decisions instead of me, though they may communicate my choice. They are just people who can get in contact with me if the need arises.

My ruling is final. Anything else plays out in the court of popular opinion by the votes.

Manga Characters are NOT eligible for this draft.

Origin
Doesnt; matter. You wanna draft someone from Buffy? A-ok with me.
Transformers? G.I. Joe? Sure.
Seriously, as long as there has been a comic book about it - it's fair game.

Hero Status
In the last Comic draft we ran into an issue where, the DAY before someone drafted a character, a book was released that turned that character from hero to villain, so in order to circumvent that, I am placing this mandate: A characters eligibility is based on weather they are a hero or a villain on the day Sign ups begin. If the character is DEAD, Then their eligibility is based on their status at the moment of death.

After the Drafting Process
At the end of the fifth round, the teams will be complete. At that point, there will be the 24 hour Free for all period. Once that is over, everyone who wants to will have 2 days to collate anything they want to explain or promote their team, be it a book synopsis, a photo shop image or a hand drawn cartoon. After that We'll be opening voting for a week.

When Voting starts, you will vote on TWO category (and yes, in the same mail is fine)
Best overall Team your own personal preference can come into this one best theme, best character combo...
Best Story potential as I think THIS is the mark of a good comic, it is worth getting a vote on too. Basically this is the category that asks which of the teams would you most like to read a comic about.

Now I'm not going to stop people from voting for the same team in both categories, but I will remind you that Best over all team could be the team with your favorite characters on it, but the Best story team could be a story you would wanna see play out.

I will announce the top THREE teams in each category.

Prizes
I am offering NO prizes.
Zero
Ziltch
Notta.

If anyone else gets the idea to put up prizes, please, keep it to your self and send some PMs after the results are announced.

I kinda like the idea of a return to the simpler Ideals of the drafts.

Rayne 05-01-2008 07:52 AM

Okay...These would be my choices so far:

DC - Swamp Thing

Marvel - Ghost Rider

Independent - Spawn

I'll have to do the other two in a second...I gotta...umm...well...

I have to pee

_____V_____ 05-01-2008 07:55 AM

1 Marvel Character - Frank Castle aka The Punisher.

1 DC Character - Bruce Wayne aka The Batman.

1 Independent Hero - Witchblade.

And then two others of our choice - Wolverine & Iron Man.

I d go for a realistic and gritty uber-violent thriller. That is apt to score more than any mutant-show-of-powers, or battling a larger-than-life situation/ villain.

bloody_ribcut 05-01-2008 08:00 AM

theme : japan underground

GorePhobia 05-01-2008 08:00 AM

What kind of theme is that V?

Like "revenge" type?

Because that is a pretty sweet idea.

Maybe "Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold."

With: The Punisher, Batman, Wolverine, Marv (Sin City) and someone else.

Revenge would be great. Because revenge-themed flicks have been doing awesome recently.

Looking down my list, each of those heroes is pretty well-driven with a seed of vengeance in all of em...(maybe, except Witchblade).

neverending 05-01-2008 08:05 AM

So it seems the trick is going to be picking heros nobody else has picked, so the obvious choices are out.

I was always partial to the supernatural characters- so Deadman might be a good choice. Likewise The Phantom Stranger. Both DC characters. For an independent- how bout E-Man? The Spirit would be an indie supernatural type. As Rayne suggested- Ghost Rider....

Are you getting my drift here? It's a theme- The Ghostly Brigade or something like that.

And I gave it to you instead of sending it in myself....lol...

Rayne 05-01-2008 08:12 AM

Okay...My full list

DC - Swamp Thing

Marvel - Ghost Rider

Independent - Spawn

2 others:

Deadpool & maybe Grendel

GorePhobia 05-01-2008 08:13 AM

Yeah that is a cool idea also Neverending.

The obvious choices are not always out though because people do themes and they think the same thing about them being out early. The key is to get a good spot in the snake draft so hopefully I can get a spot in the middle so let's say I am 10 out of 20 then I would get my pick in the middle all the time instead of having to wait.

I like these two ideas so far though.

Supernatural Themed.
Revenge Themed.

We should do a draft here sometime if anyone is interested. Maybe a LIVE ACTION COMIC BOOK DRAFT OR A HORROR BASED ONE with the same kind of rules.

They have to be from a movie and you need to have one TV pick.

Rayne 05-01-2008 08:23 AM

OH, my theme would be something horror-related

Or supernatural like Neverending said

Underworld type thing...Help from the 'other side'

The dead fight to save the living

Something like that

ferretchucker 05-01-2008 08:25 AM

Dr. Strange
The Martian Manhunter
Bionic Woman
Nightwing
Beast

I went for a mix of intelligence with strength. Infact, if you don't use it, I might draft up a little thing like this (but not send it in) for myself.

Rayne 05-01-2008 08:28 AM

Can you use a rogue character?

I would suggest Johnny the Homicidal Maniac

His intentions are basicly good...At least HE thinks so :)

GorePhobia 05-01-2008 08:31 AM

I am not sure Rayne I can always check.

So what do you guys think about a draft being ran here?

Horror Movie Heroes or Horror Movie Villains or it doesn't even need to be Horror we can do anything.

Live Action Hero Draft where it can be any hero from any kind of movie or it can be a villain one also.

GorePhobia 05-01-2008 08:45 AM

So what do you all think? Don't everyone speak at once.

:)

Zero 05-01-2008 08:55 AM

interesting puzzle

one thought i had was a group of heroes whose powers all relate - in one way or another - to the soul - not sure what you might call them:

Deadman (DC)
The Spectre (DC)
Ghost Rider (Mar)
Gargoyle (MAR - bit character from The Defenders)
Spawn
(or Hellboy)
also Adam Warlock (a MAR character who had the 'soul stone')

missmacabre 05-01-2008 08:59 AM

this is a bit of a work in progress. I havent fully thought it through.

Theme: Bhuddist Elements

DC: Obsidian (All Star Squadron, Void element. He can merge with shadows.)
Marvel: Renascence aka Wind Dancer (New Mutants, Wind element)
Independant: Liz Sherman (Hellboy, Fire element)
Your Pick: The Thing (Fantastic Four, Earth element) and Abe Sepian (Hellboy, Water element)

GorePhobia 05-01-2008 09:12 AM

These are all pretty good themes.

You are were better at this then I was because I couldn't for the life of me come up with a theme.

So again I will ask. Is anyone down for doing a draft? If we can get enough involved we can do this.

Well I don't quite know what that entails. if it was in the big blurb a few pages back I guess I'll read it. i thought we were just giving you ideas.

GorePhobia 05-01-2008 09:30 AM

Well you were giving me ideas but then when a handful of you showed some interest I said to myself, "Hmmm maybe we could do a kind of draft here."

Yes it's the blurb on the last page. That is how they did the rules for the Comic Draft. We can do the same type of thing but do a Movie draft or a Horror Themed draft.

Like I stated before: Horror Movie Heroes and/or Villains Draft

Five Members Per Team
Must Include One TV Show member (A villain/hero from a Horror based TV show)

You make a team, you come up with a theme, you make a story or background for your team and then the board votes on the team that was most creative.

Maybe we can put up prizes or something that goes to the winner or something or we can do it for fun. Either way.

okay, I'd be up for that. Much less time consuming than other games on here.

GorePhobia 05-01-2008 09:48 AM

Okay so far it would be myself and you.

If we can get about 15-20 people to join up then we can do it.

So if anyone else reads this just let me know if you are interested.

Psycom5k 05-01-2008 10:04 AM

1 Marvel Character - Deadpool
1 DC Character - Ion (Aka, Kyle Rayner, Green Lanter)
1 Independent Hero - The Darkness AKa Jackie Estacado
And then two others of our choice. - Captain America, Green Arrow.

Deadpool - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadpool_%28comics%29

Ion - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Rayner

Green Arrow - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Arrow

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...w_60_cover.jpg

I'll make a themed list later, but thats just what I would pick for my team. Basicly i'm trying for an all around team, Deadpool is a master assassain/bounty hunter, so he is deadly in hand to hand combat, along with his use of firearms, and the fact that he has a healing factor almost as good as wolverines makes him a nice addition to the team. Ion is basicly a green lantern with more power and better control over his powers than a regular green lantern. The darkness can summon minions to do the things that he and everybody else can't do. Captain America is super strong and is a very capable leader. Green arrow is a markman, and is more accurate than a sniper, not to mention that his trick arrows can be useful in certain situations, along with his use of a Katana, and the training he had under the different assassins makes him a very nice addition also.

Yep, I am a nerd, hear me roar!

Rayne 05-01-2008 10:12 AM

OH...I wanna change Grendel to the Darkness :p
