2 seconds later he pissed all over my shoulder.
these things eat and crap more than the average dog. has to be seen to be believed (i guess it's because they are so young) |
No- it's because they're RATS.
|

i've had rats before - but they were a lot older .. never had the appetite these guys do. friendly little buggers though - especially the black and white one .. when you stick your hand in the cage he jumps in then runs up your arm to sit on your shoulder. |

You should train them to go after someone when they have their scent! That'd fuck someone who screwed you over then was trying to sell their house! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

"Giddy Up!...Let's go. Whatcha waitin' for old man?" :D |
Man, i am envious. Rats make incredible pets. We have a dog and 2 rabbits. We love all of them, and will always have dogs, but bunnies are like big mice; ungrateful and fucking messy. Cute as hell though.
I would kill for rats again. the hooded one ^ looks like my late rat Ripley (yes, named after sigourney weaver in Alien) |
if it wasnt for the short life span i'd say they were the best pets ever
|
Okay, wasnt Preacher going for a PHD in molecular biology? there is his doctoral thesis, he needs to extend the lifespan of the domestic rat.
May as well give them opposable thumbs while we're at it. |
I like the brown/black one.
I haven't had rat kittens in ages...I've got a female, but the pet retailers around here are just shit and haven't had any in a while. Yeah, you'll get the friendliest rats by hand rearing them from a young age - The mothers that I've had, haven't been overly psycho, so I've been able to pat them from pretty young ages, and pick them up even before their eyes open...it's good when they have your scent even before they can see...I think the best thing is the day their eyes start to open. My rat eats pretty much whatever, prefers vegetables though. I agree, they are a great pet to have, they're friendly and always interesting to watch, they're clean, and don't require too much maintenance beyond feeding and the occasional wash. They're one of the few animals aside from dogs that actually seek out human attention/companionship, and I like that. - The pissing thing tends to stop. Just put them back in their cage/hut whenever they do it, and don't pick them up right after they wake. |

So yeah...biggest litter I've had, fyi, was 16, the smallest coming in at just 3. |
I have 2 rats. There kick ass pets. I can let vlad Go in the house and when i call him he comes back. Your rats are cute!! :D

Hey, you would probably love Ratatouille. Its about a rat that cooks :) |

... Urge, they're adorable. It's a shame they wouldn't get along with my hairless kitty. |
Quote:
ok .. even though you threw it out there - i'm not going for it. too easy - even for me :D |
well, went out and bought a 3' high, 4 tiered cage for the rat pack.
we were using an aquarium but they were rapidly growing out of it. they freaking love the cage. thank god - the damn thing cost $139.00 more than my 1st car. |
You'll probably want to seperate the males and females soon...you'd be surprised how early things can take place.,.
|
Quote:
But...I'm sure you already thought of that :) |
Quote:
we thought we'd maybe try one litter - then keep them seperated after that .. i think we have 1 female and 2 males. when we do seperate them we'll need another female to keep her company |
Yeah...they're a social creature.
I have only one female now, and have been trying to get her a friend, but we have periods around here you just can't get them.... Good thing that they're so human friendly, because we'll spend time with her, but another rat would be nice. |
well,
i got home yesterday and found the female rat cleaning off a couple of babies. I knew she was preggers so i moved her into the old aquarium one day before - talk about perfect timing. i cant see them clearly - but there looks like about 10 babies. she seems to want out a lot but is still tending to the babies. hopefully they'll all survive and i can get some cool pictures to post |
So, does this make you a grandpa?! :D
|
cute rats.
i bought a feeder mouse for a dollar once. his name was bob. he was the fattest one i could find, but he smelt so bad i had to give him away. he stunk up my entire room, along with my hallway, and i bathed him twice a day. made no difference. |

so - if anyone wants some rats in a couple of months - let me know ... |
Quote:
i have to post new pics - they're 5 times the size now . and yeah - mice are smellier than rats. i clean the rat cage out once a week, and take it out in the back yard to hose it down. just bought some pet shampoo to give them a bath during the weekly cleaning as well. |
and - here are the babies - 2 weeks old.
3 hooded (like dad) and 8 black with white bellies and feet (like mom) they're getting mobile - and mom has no problem with me handling them. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/DSC05835.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/DSC05836.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/urgeok/DSC05837.jpg took these while cleaning the cage |
Soooooooooo adorable!
What are you going to do with them? Keep 'em or sell 'em? |
