Gross Food Thread

Okay, I'm sure you know where I got this idea...I've become sorta fascinated with this...I seriously am amazed that people actually eat some of these things...It would seem that they couldn't possibly taste good...It all just makes me wonder WHY?...As well as 'how?'...Ugh...

Could you guys please post some that you've heard of, or maybe even eaten?

I'll throw a few in here and there, too.

Doesn't this look yummy?:
Silkworm Pupae (between maggot and bug stage) :

Here are two that need no explanation...I'm sure everyone can figure out what they are. They are commonly eaten, even in the United States...yuck:

Guess what these are :p :

I wouldn't eat 'em:

Rayne 04-08-2008 01:22 PM

At least THIS one was an accident...But, now I'm beginning to think someone might actually eat it...ugh:

If so - i had it once made by a greek chef at his BBQ (greek orthodox easter) and it was wicked good.

These are very puke-worthy, especially the bug cookie things! Ew!

But I like the picture of the bug smashed into the loaf of bread and I think that picture should be in a museum somewhere.

bloody_ribcut 04-08-2008 03:39 PM

i thought that was a rat in the bread...

crabapple 04-08-2008 03:57 PM

Oh! I guess that is a rat...or a mouse...it looked like a huge bug at first, but then I tilted my head and I see how it can be a rodent...but it got sliced, do you see that? It got sliced along with the loaf. That's really quite a picture!

Oh yes, I saw the slice marks...Now, just imagine what each individual slice of that bread would look like laid side by side...

I think it's the way that those types of food look which makes them seem disgusting from our perspective. Also, that we don't generally consider insects to be food in our culture. However, in reality it's not vastly different from eating a hamburger... It's just that hamburgers look nicer, we're used to them, and we don't usually want to think about how they're made when we're eating them...

The STE 04-08-2008 06:35 PM

Crabs and lobsters look like big bugs, and we eat them.

Only if you've been eating a combination of shit and sour kraut for four years straight.

neverending 04-08-2008 06:56 PM

I don't like hominy, but I do like sauerkraut- especially on a nice Reuben Sandwich.

Elvis_Christ 04-08-2008 07:05 PM

Whats a Reuben Sandwich?

Heaven on rye.

The STE 04-08-2008 07:07 PM

A sandwich for people who hate sandwiches.

neverending 04-08-2008 07:09 PM

The Reuben sandwich is a grilled or toasted sandwich made with either pastrami or corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and either Russian dressing or Thousand Island dressing.[1] It is typically made with rye bread.

People really DO like them...I made TONS of them every day when I was a teenager working in a pizza parlor...I couldn't believe that they were so popular...I never even wanted to try one...I just stuck with my steak hoagies with pizza sauce, onions, black olives, green olives, mushrooms, and plenty of mozzarella cheese...I always brushed the buns with garlic butter, too...I still make steak hoagies that way at home :)

The STE 04-08-2008 08:20 PM

I like PoBoy sammiches.

Eating makes drinking more possible... especially things with a lot of bread.

Thanks, I was wondering if I was the first person ever to make a joke about new zealanders and having sex with sheep.

edit: Elvis: Don't tell big chief chugalug that I've been wasting time on here instead of clubbing seals.

I hear the Grand Poobah of Canada gets pissed if his citizens don't make their seal quota.
