Lemmings

I'm curious as to why no one attacks Christianity via film. I'm not trying to rub resident Christians the wrong way, but there is a lot of angst in this world. I'm not seeing it. There was foo over the Golden Compass and its meaning, but what I'm seeking is something that's more "in your face."

No institution has been safe from screenwriters, directors, even the actors themselves, to parody, mock, bash, harange, and utterly protest on the big screen and the glittery glamoury or the amazing silzer screen (distinguish made to represent small films and indie films -low budget v. major films and "blockbusters"- mega budget), except Christianity.

Why no action films where the US is run by militant Christians? Why no films set in the Inquisition about people getting out of a sticky situation? If you're going to degrade other religions (see that godawful Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) let's put some smut about Christians.

Why is this a topic never breached in the film industry unless "the Church(s)" (Catholic or Prostant) maintains good guy status?

It's been done, you're just not looking close enough. I see no reason to attack anybody's belief system though, you should be wanting to see attacks on radicals and hypocrites that use Christianity (or any other religion) as an excuse to harm others or fatten their wallets. Damn witches... ;)

Posher778 03-22-2008 11:47 AM

I'm pretty sure christianity is mocked in films very commonly...

Psycom5k 03-22-2008 12:43 PM

Wouldn't The Cruciable count under that as well?

I was suprised when the exorcist came up in topic for me after I moved to the U.K that it was origanally banned... And for some time as I believe.

But then just yesterday it was good Friday and it was as big a shopping day as christmas eve.

In Australia we don't ban the Exorcist but we hardly even open a pub on Good Friday...

So, I'm confused as fuck as to where priority lies with these Freaks!

That's because it varies from denomination to denomination and region to region.

Well, what my point is we are not extreame religous freaks as to ban a movie about the church in Australia... But working conditions in the UJ.K ar absolute shit and they don't even get good friday of, it's just called a bank holiday and every one works, but they don't get penalty rates they just get an extra days holiday.

Penalty rates in Australia are time and a half or double time and a hal i'm staring to forget for a public holiday.. then if you don't have to work on the public holiday you recieve full pay...

So this system is screwed.

But back to the point. What I was Origanally getting at is that they seem to be useing easter as a bigger marketing/shopping campaighn here in the U.K,.
\

Which once against makes no sense to me in a town like Glasgow with one football club catholic and the other Prodistant... fucked if I know how they justify themselfs at church.

I mean if they are so ritcheous about there religons that they fight in the streets about it why don't they care at easter?

Kemal 03-22-2008 02:34 PM

Escape from LA and V for Vendetta had countries run by Christian religious fanatics. Kingdom of Heaven had Christians as the bad guys.
And any movie that has the KKK as the bad guys, because the KKK is militant Christian. The neo-Nazis in American history X were called the "Disciples of Christ" or something. That just what I can recall off the top of my head, I'm sure there are more.

Haunted 03-22-2008 03:14 PM

The closest point I could make would be The De Vinci Code, as lame as it is. In that film destroying the foundries of the Church is the theme.... SPOILER

However, chica opts not to in the end.

You're all thinking for me, and I appreciate it, but you're thinking how I thought you might. Yes, the issue is addressed in film. They've dealt with the darker themes of the mythos, i.e. demons and the apocalypse. Never is it attack or questioned, in the face like. Ya know? Islam, Judaism, once again Hinduism, Buddhism have all been trashed by filmmalkers, and really great filmmakers at that. Why not share the love?

@Despare- I realize that there is no point is singling one group out... in the ultimate sense of things- unless the story falls that way. Unfortunately a huge part of horror is dealing with the despicable and blasphemous... the unclean so, it is essential to play with this subject a little bit.

What's really nice about this crew is that we can have casual conversations about religion and no one cops an attitude.

I think Christianity is the one religion that attacks itself enough already...but yeah, there's been movies that've portrayed them as the "bad guy" or the party in the wrong, for sure.

Zero 03-22-2008 03:27 PM

box office - anti-christian films don't work; anti-semitic is ok but in terms of dollars you can't piss of mainstream christians and make a buck. look at last temptation of christ versus passion of the christ.

at least its better than the old days when the Legion of Decency could force a film to be totally re-edited or rewritten at the threat of a 'condemned rating.'

Doc Faustus 03-22-2008 03:43 PM

I think the Wicker Man got in some good jabs.

Haunted 03-22-2008 03:44 PM

You're right in that they are the majority religion, however given the number of people who "are not" and the number of people who aren't over ridden with guilt or just uptight, you'd think it would be all clear. Now is the best time during this high hoped world of Rationalism or rather the attempt at being hopefully rational.

Doc, you know I haven't seen that. Can't really decide if I want to. The original one was pants. I saw that years ago, while I was in high school. Ths film was just despicable in it's portrayal of a modern day ancient society (hah!), ridiculous! Even archeolgists in the 1960's knew somethings about the lives of those folk. It's just that we aren't always thought of when their affairs are researched. No one comes to the present day followers of those paths and says, "Great news, peeps."

Doc Faustus 03-22-2008 04:08 PM

The new one is dreadful. I think you should give the original another chance, though. Yes, in some ways it is backward in how it regards paganism, but it succeeds in mature discourse in lieu of Marilyn Manson style topdog bashing. Mature discourse is what's necessary. I would like to see more films about how divinity and the church are wholly different animals. Maybe something about the misbehavior of a priest and god developing a malthusian towards him. I do agree that a more enlightened view toward paganism is necessary and the church has done its share of crap to people, but I think more needs to be done to remind people that faith is in their hearts and minds, not their wallets and not in any building built in the last two or three hundred years. Happy Spring, blessed be.

Anything people can commercialize they will. Personally I don't think any religious holiday should be paid vacation unless the people celebrating use a vacation day or personal day but that's just my opinion. As far as the banning, well, everybody wants to ban things they find offensive and nobody wants to take credit for it. Hell, the republicans get shit for wanting to censor and ban music all the time when Tipper Gore was the one who started that shit. Ah well, I'm glad I got off track here, I wasn't sure where I was going anyway. Like I said, no government in the world should stop working on a religious holiday, and I'm not even one of those people who are super crazy about separating everything religious from state (nativity scenes, menorahs, etc...).

I thought about a tattoo, not for me or anything just thought it'd be funny to get one of Jesus all smiling n' shit, looking down shooting someone through the face, and a slogan above "who needs fiction?", yknow...then hit up a local church or somethin'

So like a troll but in real life instead of on an internet forum.

Roderick Usher 03-25-2008 01:26 PM

Kevin Smith's Dogma does a good job of evicerating Catholicism and all dogmatic faith in general, but is inherently Christian at its core and even serves as a reafirmation of faith for some.

Have you seen the documetary series on PBS called A Brief History of Disbelief? It is actually the FIRST EVER television program dedicated to telling the history of Atheism. It is fascinating.

and my screenplay DAMNED will certainly give the zealots something to bitch about:D

Although it's not a film, I have two words for you.

SOUTH PARK!

But I do see where you're coming from. There are never any Christian extremists in film, even though they are out there in the real world. But the churches do have huge powers, and if your really piss them off you want to watch out! Especially the Catholics.

Haunted 03-26-2008 06:46 AM

They only toe the line, never cross it. They've become quite the pussies in their old age come to think of it.

For the record, and I'm stating this because I hate bullshit and liars, I'm not Australian, have only toyed with notion of visiting the place. However, there's a website I visit that is geared towards religious freedom, and one of the things the site does is post articles from around the world about religious intolerance. I've seen some really good shit come from Australia, and I've seen the Catholic church in that nation go on bitch fits that would make John Paul the 2nd roll over in his grave, if he weren't already rolling over due to the current pope. (Don't get me started on Ratzinger). From the people, and grant it, they were other Neo Pagans, that I've talked to, Australia has tons of new insights, but religion aint exactly one.

Never said you did. I was saying what would happen if you did it was a reasonable response to a question or a ponderment or what ever. Pity you are incapable of the same.

Wow haunted. You are full of “edamoocatiuon from da interanetz” Australia has religious tolerance I think the whole world would be jealous of. And so what the Catholic church get into bitch fights here. Sure they speak their mind when they feel they have too. But again that’s because of something you can’t or seem unable to comprehend freedom. And you won’t see any or many new insights of religion come out of Australia. Because religion isn’t a big deal here. You are what you are here and no one gives a shit really.
(thank God). I Know your little “neo pagan” friends might say otherwise. But just tell them from me. When someone laughs at them when they are walking down the street, it isn’t because they are “pagan” *scoff*. But its because they look like little emo’s. And as far as Pope Benedict goes. He is the right pope for the right time. And Pope John wouldn’t be doing much spinning , since he was the one who put Benedict in the best position to become pope.
So pagans should do what they do best. Downloading their religion from “da internetz”

Incapable of what? Being illiterate?
"Ponderment".
Ha, guess it's true about the education standards in Tasmania.

First off sorry for being a little “creative” with my words. I know “ponderment isn’t a word you would find in a dictionary. But as English is a living growing language, your point at my illiteracy is a moot point. If you are incapable of understanding such things that isn’t my problem. The only reason I said sorry is for making you look stupid. And I don’t know where you get the idea I come from Tasmania as I only mentioned the place once in a post. But anywho. It’s good to see you’re still the same little angry geek. Who’s greatest roll in life is to be a angry little “warrior of da internetz” or should I say “worrier of da internetz”?
So go in peace my angry insecure little friend.
