I was planning on making the trip over to Ireland today, but with all the sudden expenses I had to miss out, I'll be on the Guiness tonight though.

newb 03-17-2008 05:19 AM

I'll just have a couple Black & Tans tonight...it is monday.

Elvis_Christ 03-17-2008 04:41 PM

Yeh St Pattys falling on a monday kinda killed things a little bit...
It was yesterday for me and it was really quiet round the city for a change instead of the usual drunken carnage.

The Mad Monk 03-17-2008 04:49 PM

St. Patrick's Day is just a promotional gimmick for Guinness, IMO!

Elvis_Christ 03-17-2008 04:54 PM

.... and a chance for stores to get rid of their green clothes n' shit.
Who the fuck wears green clothes unless your dressing up?

neverending 03-17-2008 04:57 PM

I do............

The two most common types of Black and Tan [or Half & Half to be PC ];) in the United States use Guinness Draught (not Extra Stout) and either Bass, or Harp Lager. The "layering" of Guinness on top of the ale is possible because the relative density of Guinness is less than that of the ale. Note: the layering is often mistakenly attributed to the fact that Guinness is partly carbonated with the lighter nitrogen gas but this theory is disproved by the fact that Black and Tans were around long before Guinness started putting nitrogen into stout.

First fill a glass halfway with the ale, then add the Guinness Draught (from the can, bottle, or tap). The top layer is best poured slowly over an upside-down tablespoon placed over the glass to avoid splashing and mixing the layers. A specially designed black-and-tan spoon is bent in the middle so that it can balance on the edge of the pint-glass for easier pouring.

In the United Kingdom, another way of preparing a Black and Tan is to pour half a pint of dark stout into a pint glass and then top up with draught bitter, so that both beers are thoroughly mixed together.

It's always amused me, and forgive me if I'm wrong Ferox, but Americans seem to celebrate St Patrick's day more than the Irish. Hell, we celebrate it more than St George's day. And to be honest, George deserves it more. He slayed the dragon to save the princess...kinda like a more awesome Mario with a sword. What did Paddy ever do?

You're prolly right - it is a big thing here but the PArade in NYC is much bigger and I'd imagine the one in Boston is too...

Never been a big fan of it because it tends to be amateur night in the town pubs - ppl getting messy fights etc....

Face it though Ferret, we Americans take most holidays and transform them into a drunken debauchery fest. Especially if the holiday is from another country.

See you on Cinco De Mayo!

Oh, and what would the ...proper...term be for an Irish car bomb....

Boring St. Patties for me this year again.... though the corned beef is fucking delicious. I know i'm gonna have some bad gas tomorrow.... damn cabbage... why do you have to taste so good.

Doc Faustus 03-17-2010 03:50 PM

Got the second to last six pack of Guinness 250th Anniversary Stout at the grocery store. Good stuff.

Caenxavier 03-17-2010 05:29 PM

I don't get the whole Guiness hype. Yes, it tastes alright, but to me it's the Budweiser of Irish beer.

LOL

Doc Faustus 03-18-2010 10:38 AM

250th Anniversary is a lot better. I do agree with you. If I want to throw down for a good dark beer, and if I want beer, I throw down, I go with Sam Adams Imperial Stout, Blackened Voodoo or Left Hand Blackjack. But, 250 Anniversary is dark, rich and excellent.

newb 03-18-2010 02:55 PM

not a big fan of Guinness...but would like to try the 250th one.

Ferox13 03-18-2010 03:30 PM

One Paddys day I had a 6 pack of Guiness (small cans) and some lucky charms for breakfast while watching a double bill of Darby O'Gill and the little people plus Bride of the Leprechaun..

That was a good year,,,
