1408, possibly the scariest thing on earth
I've been in the Marine corps for 6 years. I've had terrorists shooting at me with AK-47s and RPGs, I didn't flinch.
I've been hunting alone in the Alaskan wilderness and had a bear bum rush me, wasn't even almost scary. I was attacked by 6 members of the most violent gang in Anchorage, it was painful, but not scary. I was watching 1408 alone at night by myself, just like I always do. About a fourth into the movie I had to turn the lights on. 20 minutes later I had to go sit at the back of the room so nothing was behind me. 20 minutes after that I had to go get my gun, so I sat in the back of the room, with the lights on, with a pistol clutched in my hand throughout the rest of the movie. That is some scary shit, I thought I lacked the fear emotion untill now. |
not much of that makes sense, I think you're crazy...

... Someone needs to invent a user-registration filter system that detects how utterly useless someone is before they are allowed to sign-up.

Dude, that says more about The US marine corps, hunting in Alaska and gangs of Anchorage, than it says about horror movies.. Stick to cartoons. |

I honestly hope no one questions why people don't stick around here after replying to the guy like that. Maybe it was the lack of anything definitely threatening that got to him? Because there wasn't a direct assailant/antagonist in the film the usual response didn't kick in for him? Lots of possibilities there.
I don't happen to think it was terribly scary, myself. A good concept, yes. But that's my opinion. He's entitled to his. |

MothMan is correct.
If you can't handle the heat when you get here, you might as well pack your username and leave. We want people that know what horror really is. |

How does a gun protect you from a movie?
PTSD |

@Roderick Maybe it keeps you safe in case the girl from The Ring winds up in 1408 and decides to come out of the TV....Like that would ever happen. :p |

Generally I try to be the diplomat when it comes to Forum Nastiness, but, honestly, I've really started to lose my patience with... people over the years... You've come to a public forum. You KNOW that people are going to read what you write. So if you're going to be a moron, douche, perv, asshole, idiot, jackass, twit, debauchee, degenerate, TOOL, WHATEVER... You should be prepared for the consequences. |

He was attempting to connect with people over scary movies. So he didn't choose the best method to do it....seeing as he has no way at all of understanding the social dynamic that goes on here, immediately crucifying him out of the gate really ain't gonna change that.
Anyway, I imagine I have now become one of the aforementioned morons or douche bags for pointing this out, and I'm going to follow it up with the observation that it isn't survival of the fittest so much as a people being brave under the anonymity of the internet hammering their opinions over the head of another. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. So is the other guy. The fact that in the time I've been here I've seen more comments about how stupid people are or their opinions are than actual discussion about movies is very telling. Enjoy yourselves. This obviously isn't the place for me. |

Damn that subdued guilt complex of mind... Let it roll off, Red. Let it roll off. She's right: It's not appropriate to personally attack people. But, I'm sorry, if someone makes their first post completely stream of consciousness while at the same time emphatically relating an incredibly ridiculously ludicrous anecdote - I'm not sure what they expected the response TO be. There's a way to say, "What do you think of 1408? I thought it was the scariest movie that I've seen in a long, long time. And I'm not the type of person who scares easily." Statements like that invite discussion about the film, whether or not it scared people, while at the same time the thread-starter is sounding more inviting, well-spoken, and mature. However, his post was immature, not well thought-out and seemed more to be bragging about his time in the army and the fact that he keeps weapons within grabbing distance. Quite frankly, I am a complete advocate for gun control. I also thought that 1408 was one of the weakest films of the year, and the fact that it provoked this individual to clutch his loaded household gun in his hands, well, that's an image that obviously bothers me on multiple levels. Someone who keeps a loaded weapon around the house shouldn't be taking it out over watching a scary movie, regardless of what movie it is. And, given my staunch political beliefs, I really don't find the anecdote amusing, whether or not he was exaggerating. Personally, I see an anti-gun campaign right here. |
Someone actually makes tiny working violins. they would have had a world record but guiness was debating what constituted as a functional violin.
