"Child's Play" remake!

This is getting ridiculous:

Child's Play Remake in the Works

October 20, 2007

While many of producer David Kirschner's recent movies with his partner Corey Siniega, such as the biopic Miss Potter and the upcoming Martian Child, might not necessarily be "Shock-worthy", Kirschner's second film, Child's Play roughly twenty years ago kicked off a popular horror franchise that has inspired many imitations and four sequels.

ShockTillYouDrop.com had a chance to interview Kirschner for his upcoming movie where he surprised us by announcing that they were working on another "Chucky" movie, which would be a remake of the original Child's Play. (But surely, we all knew this was coming, right?)

"We're discussing it with Don Mancini, who has written all of them with us from the beginning," Kirschner told us. The next one we're going to do is we're going back and remaking the first one and even pushing it further and making a very terrifying version of the first one, which is pretty scary as it is."

"We haven't come up with anybody yet," he replied when asked whether they were looking at any of today's cutting-edge horror directors. "We haven't really discussed that. We've just been working on stories, so I think that'll be a fun process when we get there."

Of course, the age-old question of "Why?" immediately came up. "Look at 'Halloween'," he quickly responded. "It's kind of commerce to keep the franchise going, and another reason to go see it. For me, it's exciting, because the first one was really scary and then from there, we kind of… my favorites are 1 and 4. I love 4, it really makes me laugh and I think Jennifer Tilly is so great, but just the idea of going back to where we were the first time around and I think for me, it's almost 30 years later for me as a filmmaker from where I started to now, and the idea of taking some skill that maybe I didn't possess then and putting it towards the next film, I think could be exciting."

Would they possibly use the same script? "I think it would be pretty close to it, that's for sure, but there's some other things that we're exploring also, and some twists that we don't want the audience to expect, as far as a couple deaths, where you think you're going in one way and you're going to go in another way as a result of knowing it and it being such a popular franchise." These new developments may include learning more about Charles Lee Ray, although they're discussing whether series regular Brad Dourif will be back in that role and once again voicing Chucky.

But don't just assume that because we're well into the 21st Century that Chucky will be any sort of CG motion-captured creation. "It'll be an animatronic doll, like we do all of them, but animatronics have grown from when we did the first one 20 years ago. We just did the commentary on the 20th Anniversary of it, and all the stars, the little kid Andy Barkley, all of that, so that's coming out in January/February."

"Don't fuck with the Chuck"

I will refuse to see this without Brad Dourif, that's like hiring someone else to play Ash.

Agreed. Well said.

GorePhobia 10-21-2007 04:15 AM

or someone else to play Freddy.

ferretchucker 10-21-2007 04:53 AM

All I can say is, if they didn't...it would be the waste of someone who would (I'm sure) make themselves available to it...not much "serious" work has really come his way.
I'd like to see a "reimagining", maybe darker than the first but along the same lines, with enough difference to make it original.

massacre man 10-21-2007 05:39 AM

I still can't picture Chucky with a different voice, I've been trying, but I can't.

James Earl Jones?

Phalanx 10-21-2007 05:40 AM

Samuel L Jackson

Kane_Hodder 10-21-2007 07:48 AM

This is going to be a bad idea, I can feel it. If Brad Dourif decides to skip this one, it may as well be halted at the conceptual stage.

Welcome to the onslaught....

Yep.

Totally not necessary, but it could be worth watching if like Phalanx suggested it was a darker version, with Brad Dourif of course. It doesn't change my opinion that this is completely out of control....but I've accepted this how it is going to be. At least The Evil Dead remake seems to be halted for awhile.

the_real_linda 10-21-2007 09:34 AM

im so not fan of childs play and would welcome a remake... as long as brad did the voice, i love that dude.

Child's Play remake

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1134807/

For the love of God, stop remaking movies! At least this one is directed by Don Mancini, who has been with all of the Chucky movies and directed Seed of Chucky. Which reminds me: when I was watching the special features of Seed of Chucky, Mancini said he has another Child's Play in store, and it's going to be special. So, remaking it is special, huh? Well, Mr. Mancini, I like you, and what you've done with the series, but FUCK YOU!

fortunato 12-04-2007 03:43 PM

the world is ending. i have no doubt in my mind.

Sick_As_Fuck 12-04-2007 03:44 PM

What I find more disturbing is that the thread starter actually liked "Seed of Chucky".

I never said I liked Seed of Chucky. I think it's okay, nothing more than a fun, quick watch. All I said was Mancini directed Seed of Chucky, and that on the special features, he mentioned about another one that was special. And this, sadly, is it.

X¤MurderDoll¤X 12-04-2007 09:46 PM

wow, who cares? the whole series is pretty much remakes anyway.

ferretchucker 12-08-2007 02:15 AM

why can they not come up with new ideas?!

Here's one.

A group of teens go into some woods for a camping trip, but the entire woods is inhabited by the evil spirit of one of their dads. The trees and that start killing them, the one who's dad it is survives but at the very end when he gets back home, is crushed by a falling tree.

Angra 12-08-2007 10:27 AM

I can actually understand this remake.

I hope we get to see a whole new chucky. A SCARY chucky, with less bad one liners.

Could be alright.

True, but the first Child's Play really didn't have any one-liners. Hell, they were basically doing there best to keep the camera off of Chucky.

I should say that I'm not directly pissed that Child's Play is being remade, but that all movies are being remade. It's just a matter of time before we see a remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

TomBeTom 12-13-2007 06:32 AM

They're just re-making films for the sake of it now. I hate this idea enough, but now they've got a Michael Bay produced remake of "The Birds" happening. I think some of the remakes so far have been decent, but none have bettered or equaled the originals, so there just seems to be no point now but to cash-in. This will probably end up with Chucky getting revealed in the first 15 minutes, with the rest being "Child's Play" via "Seed of Chucky." =/

roshiq 12-14-2007 11:13 PM

Now..they truly want to fuck the Chuck.:p

Child's Play remake has Dourif back!

Aug 19, 2008

Brad Dourif will reprise his role as Chucky in the upcoming Child's Play reboot.

In an interview with the producers of the original Child's Play, writer Don Mancini said, "Who would you get that's better? …It's almost like recasting Homer Simpson or something."

Mancini, who spoke to AICN along with producer David Kirschner and Child's Play DVD producer Michelle Gold, said that although the character is animatronic, his voice has become iconic to horror fans. "I mean with Chucky... there's an aspect of him that feels like he's an animated character, so his voice is such an immense part of it as well as what he looks like," Mancini said. "If you could recast it, you would want the actor to sound kind of like it, but it would feel weird to just be completely different, I think."

Meanwhile, Kirschner explained that the film would be a reboot in the style of Incredible Hulk or Batman Begins. "It's a reboot of the Chucky origin story, I guess we can describe it that way," he said. Mancini added, "I think what we are mainly responding to, David and I, is the will of the fans, which is really telling us that they want to see a scary Chucky movie again. They want to go back to the straightforward horror rather than the horror comedy."

Mancini confessed that the idea of remaking Child's Play is at least partially an opportunity to take advantage of Hollywood's current appetite for existing properties, but he also said that the filmmakers want to return the character to his roots, so to speak. "I mean, part of that is business in the sense that that is a trend that is sort of galloping over Hollywood right now, but I feel like that's a trend we can use to our advantage, because it really does dovetail nicely with our main mission, which is to make it really scary. It's been four years since the last one, so it just seems like the timing is really good now for us to just recreate it in a way."

Kirschner echoed Mancini's sentiments. "I'm not even sure if I would say reinvention," he said. "I think Don has really created some really clever twists and expectations that a fan of the first Child's Play film, you will be surprised and shocked by, but it will follow I think very closely a lot of the first film against twists and turns that Don has put into it that an audience thinks it is going to go one way and we will go another even though the story is pretty similar."

vampira 08-20-2008 06:32 AM

What's with the remakes nowadays???!

It's sad...but then again I thought the film was stupid

The_Return 08-20-2008 07:05 AM

I couldn't really care less about this one, really...I didnt mind the first one, but didnt really care enough to bother watching any of the sequels.

I guess its a good thing that Dourif is back though, just on the principle of it.

Elvis_Christ 08-20-2008 07:41 AM

I can't wait! This is a great series of films.

VampiricClown 08-20-2008 07:44 AM

I've seen all of them...But really, a remake is pointless.....That would be like doing a remake of Gremlins.

rasobasi420 08-20-2008 10:00 AM

Child's Play (the first) was probably the only one of the series that was remotely scary or worth watching. (Although, seed of Chucky is worth it only to see Redman trying to get into Jennifer Tilly's panties. And her constantly calling him "Mr. Man" was kinda funny too.)

I don't see the need to remake it. If they're going to remake the series, remake Child's Play 2 or 3, although it wouldn't make much sense to remake a sequel without remaking the first.

Noah 08-20-2008 10:58 AM

I wish they'd just do a 5th sequel to Seed.... But I'll be all over this when it comes out.... Of COURSE they got Dourif to return, NOBODY else can do Chucky's voice!

Should be interesting to see how good (or bad) this turns out.

demonhunter64 08-20-2008 11:15 AM

meh

Not sure if this series really needs a "reboot". I mean Seed and Bride were pretty decent in respect to creating a different and dare I say better tone for the series. The original is not so dated that it requires a modern update, and people today still know about the original. Hopefully it all turns out alright, sounds like a rental though.

Seed Of Chucky was the 5th....

But not the 5th SEQUEL!

sniped90 08-24-2008 05:36 AM

i don't get it:confused: once a movie has been released what's the point?? we've seen it before and know what happens. it's a waste of money! true it may bring a new audience to the series but they may not appreciate the originals for what they were..

it would be intresting to see dourif back though

The heroes don't kill, they have brutalities. Such as Superman pounds them into the ground so they can't move.
