Is it weird that I don't have Raimi on my list when he directed my favorite film of all time? Geez....he should be on there somewhere. :(

LOL...well, makes sense since I am so damn weird myself...but really, he only directed two of my favorites, and the others on my list, more than that....so, there I have rationalized it.....:D

(~ that was a rhetorical question by the way ;) )

Bwind made a tournament last year on horror directors. I think Romero won it by beating Argento. Here's the link...

http://www.horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21982

And about my top 5 :-

1 - Sir Alfred Hitchcock
2 - Dario Argento
3 - George Romero
4 - David Cronenberg
5 - Sam Raimi

Hon. mentions - John Carpenter, Tod Browning, Mario Bava, Frank Henenlotter, David Lynch.

Thats for horror. Overall I d say Akira Kurosawa. The man was a genius.

Phalanx 11-09-2007 09:42 PM

None of these guys are JUST horror...but...

Carpenter
Timur Bekmambetov
Romero (but decreasing)
Ryuhei Kitamura
Wes Craven (well, up until mid 90's)

4.)Jack Arnold
5.)David Cronenberg

ChronoGrl 11-10-2007 05:49 AM

Ooooo... Good thread.

Shoe-ins:
John Carpenter
Alfred Hitchcock
David Lynch
Roman Polanski

Fighting for the 5th spot:
Sam Raimi
William Friedkin
George A. Romero
Takashi Shimizu
Tim Burton (I am VERY excited about Sweeney Todd)

Notes:
I'm glad that someone else classifies Lynch as a horror director. I would love to see him do a strictly horror film. Then again, if he stuck to a single genre, he wouldn't be his wonderful Lynch self.

Directors whom I haven't delved into but I should:
Dario Argento
Mario Bava
David Cronenburg (I've seen Spider, which I found well-done yet predictable)

Geddy 11-10-2007 06:26 AM

1.George Romero.
2.Sam Raimi.
3.John Carpenter.
4.Wes Craven.
5.Tobe Hopper.

You didn't like Videodrome... hmmmm... try Scanners.

I'd say...

Romero
Cronenburg
Argento
Hitchcock

There are too many directors I like and would give this fifth spot to. From greats like Raimi, Bava, Craven, Polanski and Carpenter to the... different, like Henenlotter and HG Lewis. Hell, I'd even consider putting Stuart Gorden or Roger Corman on my list.

GorePhobia 11-10-2007 08:36 AM

1. George Romero
2. John Carpenter
3. Alfred Hitchcock
4. Wes Craven
5. Dario Argento

It's too hard to decide. robert Rodriguez and Craven would be there for sure. Oh hell.

1. Ridley Scott
2. Neil Marshall
3. Wes Craven
4. Robert Rodriguez
5. James Cameron

Ehh.... Abyss is an interesting movie. I'm not sure what i'd call it. I mean, it's definitely Sci Fi, but horror? Not really.

well, i know not everyone. it seems mostly everyone has some or all of those directors in their top 5, which makes sense. there is an elite group of directors that have made such incredible strides in the horror genre that they're (until this point, at least) impossible to outdo.

agreed

I started this thread to find out with whom everyone thinks I should be working.

I've already got two out of the top 5 most frequently listed directors working on screenplays of mine and I'm trying to decide who to write for next:D

The STE 11-11-2007 08:42 PM

Someone like Miike I don't count because his stuff that isn't necessarily horror is what I like best. Ichi the Killer, especially. It's his best movie, IMO, and it's not a horror movie. Same with Chronenberg. His horror stuff was good, and all, but I was never so impressed with him as a director until his most recent movies. I think Eastern Promises is his best movie yet.

Anywho, in no particular order:

Alfred Hitchcock
Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Dario Argento
Wes Craven
Romero

David Fincher is close to being in the top 5, but is barely edged out since I don't consider Zodiac a horror movie.

The_Raven 11-12-2007 07:09 AM

Hitchcock
Browning
Cronenberg
Bava
Carpenter

in that order.

Edgar

ferretchucker 11-12-2007 07:46 AM

Carpenter
Hitchcock
Barker
Craven
Raimi
