horror movie marathon opinion(s)

okay, so i'm putting together a horror/halloween season movie marathon and i just finished the list. i was just wondering what people thought of the list, should i change anything around. i would be super appreciative of recommendations/opinions/etc.

1. hocus pocus (i feel like i have to) (1993)
2. nosferatu (1922)
3. black sabbath (1963)
4. eyes without a face (1960)
5. ichi the killer (2001)
6. don't look in the basement (1973)
7. suspiria (1977)
8. blood feast (1963)
9. spiderbaby (1968)

that's the order right now

crabapple 09-25-2007 11:35 AM

you get points for including Nosferatu. I would say, Mad Monster Party and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein are always good for Halloween parties.

jenna26 09-25-2007 11:40 AM

I always watch Pumpkinhead, there is something about it that just sets the mood. So its my one of my favorites to watch at Halloween, also Sleepy Hollow.
Good list! :)

oh, man. "mad monster party" is a great idea. i might have to consider a switch.

thanks ! pumpkinhead is great. i actually did this last year too, and we watched pumpkinhead. that was one of the first that came to my mind though, totally classic.

the_man_you_fear 09-25-2007 12:23 PM

how bout dawn of the dead or penny dreadfull (or any of the horrorfest movies for that matter) and you can never go wrong with any of the classic slashers (halloween, texas chainsaw massacare, friday the 13th etc.)

Roderick Usher 09-25-2007 12:37 PM

Sleepy Hollow for sure or the Disney Version
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

and of course

Halloween

On Halloween day, I always watch Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf-Man and Haxan early in the day, then take the kiddies trick-or-treating then come home for some good zombie gore, like Dawn of the Dead, Evil Dead and end the night with something weird like The Brood or Begotten

"the brood" is another great suggestion...i may have to rethink a couple titles.
"haxan" and "begotten" are great (and under-appreciated) films. good to see them on your halloween day watch list.

American Psycho.More of a dark comedy.

loved it.

i think your order is really good. Nice to start off with a comedy and build up to the more brutal.

Halloween

I have watched JC's masterpiece every Oct. 31st for 20 years. I usually throw in Part 2 right after.
A film that will definitely be in my DVD player this Halloween is Planet Terror.

massacre man 09-25-2007 04:24 PM

"Halloween"

Not watching "Halloween" on Halloween is like making a suit with every color but green on St. Patrick's Day.

Zombi 09-25-2007 08:45 PM

halloween would make sence on halloween, well at least the first and second one just because when u watch em together its like ...WHABAM.

sides that, hocus pocus is great.

haha, hocus pocus is classic. we watched ernest scared stupid last year.

oh i'll definitely be watching halloween on halloween. this marathon is actually going to be on the 20th-21st, so that's really the only reason halloween is not on the list.

on halloween day, i'll most definitely be watching halloween 1 & 2, along with a bunch of other stuff.

thanks for the suggestions/opinions though everybody, there were some great ones in there and i think i'm going to switch a couple things around on the lineup. i really appreciate all your help

swiss tony 09-26-2007 10:07 AM

how about some classic omen or exorcist or salems lot?

swiss tony 09-26-2007 10:16 AM

also, one of my new favourites, the beyond. demons as well. on halloween night you gotta go old skool

joshaube 09-27-2007 10:59 AM

I'm marathoning ONLY horror throughout all of October. I've cheated and started a little early, but I regret that. I want to see how high I can get my count up to, and of course... Halloween 1 & 2 on Halloween night. I started that tradition last Halloween. :)

Disease 09-27-2007 11:50 AM

I don't get hocus pocus, it's not a great movie in any sense...

oh i know that. that's not really the point. it's just cheesy and nostalgic. that's the only reason we're watching it. although i have been thinking of changing it to "mad monster party"

good stuff! i'm still pretty excited for "trick 'r treat", that is if it's still coming out when it's supposed to.

I'm so pumped for Monday! I'm trying to get at least 50 movies in this month. All horror. I've been lining stuff up for the past week, and so far have about 20 - but more on the way.

ah, it's exciting. october's almost here. i guess i'll pretty much be doing the same thing- only watching horror movies. it's hard for me to watch anything else in october because i don't feel like watching anything else.

so what's up first? do you have any idea yet?

joshaube 09-29-2007 11:46 AM

Absolutely no idea! I think I'll start with the least atmospheric ones first.

that is one hell of a list. from "Eyes Without a Face" to "Don't Look in the Basement." whew, you are definitely going to be running the gamut. I don't know if I would include Ichi. it's a great flick, but not too Halloween-y (to me, at least). and replacing Hocus Pocus with Mad Monster Party is a great idea!

regardless, these are (almost) nine of my favorite films of all time. solid choices.

someone mentioned Haxan, which would be a good choice, if you were going to replace Ichi. it's one of the movies I leave running on mute during Halloween parties.

Doc Faustus 09-29-2007 01:56 PM

My Halloween List (in no particular order)
At Midnight I Will Take Your Soul
This Night I will Possess Your Corpse
Black Sabbath
Creepshow
Bloodfeast
Mad Love
Bride of Frankenstein
Reanimator
London After Midnight
Nosferatu
House on Haunted Hill

hey there, thanks! yeah i just ordered mad monster party yesterday, and i'm still not sure if i'm going to replace ichi yet. i know it's not very halloween-y, but i wanted to put a miike in there (last year was audition), and ichi is such a great gore-fest it seemed to be the natural choice. if i do replace it, it would probably be with haxan, which roderick usher also suggested, or maybe a fulci.

thanks again for your help

I'm finishing with the first two Halloween installments. Near the end I'll be watching the films that tend to be more dark; you know, take place in the stereotypical (rainy) night setting. I'm going for Evil Dead I & II, House of 1000 Corpses, and possibly Roost (not a great movie, but it absolutely SCREAMS Halloween - without resorting to pumpkins and costumes.) But yeah, I'll probably stick with ONLY Halloween 1 & 2 for the actual night.

Oh, here's my list so far. What needs cutting?
PS. Quality of film aside, I'm talking atmosphere.
BOLD = considering getting rid of.

Nightmare on Elm Street 1-7
Friday the 13th 1-10
Freddy vs. Jason
Halloween 1-3 (3 to be watched separately)
Child's Play 1-5 (I ABSOLUTELY love Seed)
Hellraiser 3-7 (I've seen the first two... not that Halloweeny)
Sleepaway Camp 1-3
Wrong Turn 1 & 2
Evil Dead 1 & 2
Dead & Breakfast
Dead End
Boy Eats Girl
Shaun of the Dead
The Roost
Mr. Hell
Hellbent
Shrooms
Hatchet
13 Ghosts
Toolbox Murders (2003)
Hocus Pocus
Return of the Living Dead 1-2
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1-2
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Planet Terror
The Blob
Cabin Fever
House of 1000 Corpses
SAW 1-3
Jeepers Creepers 1 & 2
The Rocky Horror Picture Show

fortunato 09-30-2007 10:46 PM

wow, nice. that's quite a list.

personally i think you could cut mr. hell, hellbent, and the two you have bolded.
are you doing the original 13 ghosts or the remake?

looks really good though. tomorrow it begins! (or technically today, i guess)

joshaube 10-01-2007 09:17 AM
