So, What Exactly IS A 'MAN'?
I am SO sick of this 'macho man' type bullshit...I can't stand guys who think that drinking, fighting, and driving a truck is what makes a male person a 'MAN'
Alex and Seri's father have informed them that: @ Alex: "You shouldn't be cooking (only your MOTHER should do that), you should be mowing the lawn...You're too skinny, you need to 'workout', and you need to learn to fight..."...etcetera So, I told him "How can you tell a kid who's almost 13 that he's too incompetent to use a stove but he should be operating a lawnmower? That's a little confusing, dontcha think?"..."Alex is a very loving, caring, sensitive, intelligent individual, NOT physical, and there isn't a DAMNED thing wrong with that"...Alex has a heart condition, he certainly doesn't need the heat and exertion that mowing (especially THIS yard) would put on him, and Alex LOVES to cook, when he was 6 years old (and helping me to make pineapple upside down cake, cookies, etcetera) he said he wanted to own a bakery...But his father never thinks about things like that, or how anyone else feels...And I have tried to teach Alex that fighting is STUPID and unnecessary, unless you have to defend yourself...I have taught him that you never hit anyone smaller or weaker than you, and you NEVER hit a female, nor do you instigate a fight...There are far better, more intelligent ways to deal with things...His father will never understand the importance of BRAINS over braun @ Seri: "Why don't you find a REAL man, instead of going out with these pussies?"...Seri has had 2 boyfriends...Her father was CONSTANTLY challenging them to fight with him to 'see what you're made of...See if you could protect my daughter' God, he's SUCH a caveman...They refused, so they weren't 'good enough for her'...They didn't drink or smoke, and they were more into music and computers than fighting and acting stupid...And I have some bad news for Seri's father, Seri kinda likes somewhat 'girly guys'...And I often wonder if it's BECAUSE OF her father... Some 'men' think that as long as you work hard (whether you use the money you make to pay the BILLS or not:rolleyes:, or meet all of your responsibilities) that you are a 'real man', and if you happen to get a few dents in your truck from ramming some guy's head into it at a bar, well that's just what 'men' do...I'm gonna have to disagree Dustin is the COMPLETE opposite of my ex...That's why we're still together ;)...And Dustin always helps me to calm Alex down when his father has made him feel like shit Dustin is not a fighter (but he WILL defend himself and his family if necessary, although we're intelligent enough not to put ourselves in the types of situations where defense would likely be necessary in the first place)...He's a sensitive person, a musician, a writer, a thinker, a computer nerd and an excellent cook...All of the things that my ex considers to be 'weak', and things that he could never be My ex makes exactly SIX times more money than Dustin (which my ex thinks is an indication that he is a 'better MAN' than Dustin), but my ex is deep in debt (as he has ALWAYS been), and can't manage to pay his bills on time, OR pay child support (which is fine by me, because the less contact the better)...Dustin, with much less income, manages to pay all of our bills AND pick up the slack in taking care of Alex and doing things for Seri, because their father is always broke...and Dustin has NEVER complained about that In my eyes, Dustin is the 'real MAN'...And if he's NOT considered a man by majority standards, then fine, I'll just take whatever the hell he IS The reason I actually made this thread (besides venting :p) is to: 1) Get some responses from the females to see what THEY consider a 'man' to be...Everyone has their own opinion, maybe I'll find out that mine is different from most, or maybe my thoughts will be supported...Either way, it would be interesting to find out 2) Find out what the guys really think it means to be a REAL man 3) See if the definitions for a 'man' are different in the eyes of the females and the males...I think this part will be most interesting...Perhaps even help to understand part of the miscommunication between males and females...And emphasize the difference in mentalities between men and women Heh...Do you guys EVER get tired of feeling like my 'test subjects'?...I can't help it, human psychology enthralls me...So, please just humor me, huh? :) |
Man? What is...?
Man weeps a lot and listens to Robert Smith, right? Dress in black? Eyeliner/makeup? |

a man is the name given to the adults of the male gender in the huan race.
|
The Huan just use the word man in a derogatory way. It means "one who cannot pilot the Huan dreadnought". They're mostly a matriarchal culture.
But, seriously, I think manhood is proved by the impulse to protect. There's a lot of kinds of protection though. I think it's manly to console those who feel badly. It shows that you're willing to look out for those you call your own. I think it's manly to walk away from a fight with a weaker dumber individual. If that weak, stupid individual continues to provoke, then the manly thing is to zap him with a concealed tazer or pull a knife out of your boot and make "him" into a her. We are a cunning species that proved its worth against vicious animals. Those who seek to act like a lesser animal should be dealt with using a human response. The response that made us sharpen a stick in the first place. I think cunning and intelligence are therefore, as is sensitivity (which improves our capacity to defend our mate and family from conflicts). Real men might down beers, watch slasher movies and be mesmerized by our waitress' cleavage, but we do not do harm to our mate and family by being neanderthal retards. |
Fighting to see if they can protect daughter? Uh....If my girlfriends dad did that, he'd be dead. I fight to win and I won't stop til whoever I'm fighting no longer can get back up. I don't like to fight, but put in the situation, I can.
Drinking isn't manly. It's just stupid. I don't like driving trucks, I like driving a hearse. But does that make my genitals disappear? I believe not. |

Um yeah...Why do you guys think he's the "EX"? :p
Here's a little tip for the girls of the forum...That whole 'staying with him for the kids' sake' doesn't play out very well...I tried it until Seri was 15, when she asked me "Why is he even still here?"...Well, with the realization that even his own kids were sick of his shit, I no longer HAD a reason...And so, he was gone... |
"What makes a man, is it the woman in his arms? Just 'cause she has big titties. Or is it the way he fights every day... no it's probably the titties NOW YOU'RE A MAN! A MAN! MAN! MAN!"
According to Trey Parker and Matt Stone. |
I never really liked sports or cars as a kid.Just horror movies and......The Terminator.

Hey sis.
New there was a reason I came here. How about something from the outermost edge of society. A man cannot be defined by his possessions or his money but only by his actions. As Quato would say "You are what you do," Nickel to anyone who can reference the film. Real men dont make excuses, dont blame others for their failures and can admit to their shortcomings. Real men can paint the sky so that it would take your breath away, make a meal fit for a royal family and write poetry that brings a tear to the eye. We can show compassion and understanding. Love and be assertive. Fighting. Give me a cause "worth" fighting for and together we will spill blood. And if the women want to join in the war by all means let them. If they feel they have some stake in the cause so be it they win my accolades. Fighting for the sake of fighting makes no sense to me. Really sis what Alex should be doing is watching the WWE so he can grow to be a man. Men should meet all their responsiblities and go beyond that. Sounds to me like Dustin has gone way beyond what one would expect of him and feels unfettered. What the hell do I know being a social pariah and all. |

I love you so much...But, you know that I wish you would move closer so that Alex would have more POSITIVE male influences in his life...But, you like being out there away from the world and all...I can understand that, too...Kiss the woman and the kids for me :)...I hope you guys are all doing very well...OH, this is starting to get personal:o ...I'll call ya when I get a chance (As you know, baby doesn't give me many of those :)) |

A real man, knows when to fight, never picks one, and knows when to stop fighting. He supports his loved ones, instead of OVERLY pretecting them. He has to know when to let go, or let them learn for themselves. He knows when he is wrong. He takes care of his resposibilities and does everything he can to do more, but if he cannot fulfill is responsibilites he at least tries his hardest and gives everything he can to try to fulfill them. He always has an open mind about things, especially when it comes to his children or others children, he should know that not everything/one has to be the way he wants them. HES NOT FULL OF HIMSELF. A man is not an asshole. Doesn't treat people like garbage. Hes always there for his freinds and family, whether it be for advice or a shoulder to cry on. A real man knows that its ok to cry. Finally, a real man will give his life to save a loved one. By the way, this is coming from a guy incase anybody wanted to know |

Which smoothly now goes to talk about "real men": A real man can cook, clean, help out etc. I'm not with anyone & forever will be single, cuz I prefer it that way. And a real woman can even mow the lawn. These things of course aren't gender specific anymore like they were in say the 1950's or so. Besides there's lots of male chefs. (better them than me) I say if your son wants to cook, you should somehow have him cook in front of your ex. Now I'm thinking of barbecue...Why is it ok if a guy barbecues, but not ok if a guy say bakes a cake? (from views of ppl like your ex) Your ex (like mine) is a moron. We should ship the exes off to another planet. But unlike you, I don't have my ex pay anything. In fact, I believe he's in jail, but that's a whole nother topic. OK I'll quit rambling. |

And NOW I want some cookies :p |

I never wanted my ex to pay support. My kid does not need to even know that dumbass. He's given me 20 bucks here & there. But I can't even be in the same room as him anymore, or I will kill him. That's no joke either. Him & his mom used to come over once a season, but not this season, which leads me to believe he's in jail. Well I wish I could give ya some cookies. I would if I could. They are peanut butter btw. |
lol ya know what i totally forgot to add, that I am a chef myself, well... kinda, I'm in college for it now. So I totally disagree with the Ex of yours. Oh and about the boyfreinds of your daughter thing, Its not his decision at all who she can or can't go out with so he should just butt out.

Granted this comes from a househusband who has been in Broadway musicals and worked as a chef so take it or leave it, but this is what I teach my boys...
A MAN shows respect for himself and those around him, understands the implications of his words and actions and never allows popular sentiment to affect his value system. A MAN does what is right BECAUSE it is right and needs no praise for doing so. A MAN shows affection and compassion because to withhold these things for fear of how one appears is childish. A MAN will always change the subject when a woman asks "does this make me look fat?" because the question itself is a trap and the best response is something along the lines of..."did you say you wanted to go dancing tonight?" |

No wonder I love you guys so much :) |

What Is A Man
Is The Query Of The Day After A Little Pondering This Is What I Say A Man Is Tough Strong And Bold Yet Gentle As A Kitten When Captured In Womans Hold A Man Is The Hunter Gatherer Of Lifes Needs Bringer Of Food Of Which His Family Feeds Since The Dawn Of Time Man Has Done These Tasks Searched The World Over For What His Woman Asks My Poem May Sound Sexist But This Is Not My Intent My Woman Is On A Pedastal She Is Truly Heaven Sent She Is The Giver Of Life She Owns My Heart And My Soul Without Her In My Life I Would Never Be Whole A Man Is Many Things Without Woman He Would Fade I Should Print This Out And Show Her Maybe I'd Get Laid |
Quote:
"what makes a man, mr lebowski? is it being prepared to do the right thing? whatever the price? isn't that what makes a man?" "Sure. that and a pair of testicles." |
A Real Man knows he is a far better human because of the Real Woman that stands beside him.
@MTC:That quote is from Total Recall...and I'll be waiting for my 5 cents in the mail:D |
Outside of fiction, I have no interest in being "a man" or "manliness." Any definition would almost invariably have to be a blanket ideal, and I don't believe in those. I think just not being a piece of shit should be enough without throwing arbitrary gender-based terminology on it. The old-school "drink and fight and drive a big truck, John Wayne" shit doesn't work for me because I don't like the taste of alcohol, trucks drive like shit, and John Wayne made, what, one or two good movies? I exclude fighting because I'm not all "oh, fighting is just stupid" types. Just don't act like fighting is going to prove anything other than who can fight better. And many of the "new school" ideals either should just be universal "don't be a douche" rules or are double standards? Don't ever hit women? Bullshit. Don't be a wife/girlfriend/woman beater, sure. But if someone is doing something that you would hit them for, reproductive organs shouldn't be the deciding factor. Maybe this is my months-long physically abusive relationship talking, but fuck that "never hit women ever" noise. Out-dated, double standard, SEXIST bullshit.
Back to "what makes a man" question; the only valid answer I can think of is "who gives a shit?" |
You all sound like abunch of apron wearing queers, prancing around talking about feelings and shit.
MEN like to beat and kill things, drive big trucks and sports cars. Wear muscle shirts and drink cheap beer. Yell at things and people. Get pissed off when questioned. Thank god im just a pathetic geek. a big, tall geek who seems immune to getting picked on for all of the things manly men seem to hate. I am the cook in the house, because i like to and i am damn good at it. Most "men" dont really grill, they burn shit on expensive bonfires. I completely agree with anyone who says guys who drive big trucks and harleys, then rev their engines and drive like assholes are tiny-penised little bitches. Deep inside, they are crying because dad or some other role model called them a pussy or a fag one time. Real men laugh when they get called those things. I usually say, think what you want, if your opinion mattered, i might stick around and listen to it. |

Dude, a pissed off woman will slap the shit out of a guy, just start beating and kicking him and hitting him. I've seen it! (drinks)

But seriously...a "man", in my opinion is someone of the male gender (ya think?) that can conduct himself in a decent, respectful manner, not on the basis of wanting to be perceived a certain way, but because they can see the reflective positivity in life and others by doing so. A person who can be strong without the need to show it to the world, sad without the need to hide it, loving in the way he feels he ought to be - not how others tell him. A fella that can admit he's wrong, at least some of the time, without finding a counterpoint as to why that makes it all ok. Someone that will stand by what they feel is right, regardless of the immediate situation it may put them in, a person who will make the same stand on a friends behalf when they cannot. A person who leads by example. ...and someone who cooks, most importantly. |
