Justice League of America movie re-ignited!

From Variety.com...

One of the more ambitious projects around town — the bigscreen adaptation of DC Comics' "Justice League" — cleared a major hurdle last week.

Husband-wife writing duo Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney turned in a first draft that had Warner Bros. suits actually smiling — no small feat, considering "Justice" follows a half-dozen of the best-known superheroes working together, including Batman and Superman.

But the accomplish-ment raises a tricky question for Warners: Should it release "Justice" before its "Superman Returns" sequel?

Christopher Nolan’s next Batman pic "The Dark Knight" bows in July 2008. Bryan Singer’s "Superman" follow-up had been expected to play in 2009. But there’s no script yet for that pic, while Singer is busy getting ready to shot Tom Cruise starrer "Valkyrie" for UA.

The question now: Will a souped-up "Justice League" prove to be Kryptonite to Superman? You tell me.

The_Return 06-25-2007 11:06 PM

They'll have to be careful with this...they could really fuck up some stuff with a project like this.

_____V_____ 06-29-2007 09:58 AM

With word that the "Justice League’’ script is ready to roll, the question now is

a) when will it kick off (will it kick off before the “Superman Returns” sequel?)

and

b) who will be a part of it, cast-wise.

The new Man of Steel, Brandon Routh, says that he’d definitely be interested in reprising his role as Superman for the “Justice League” movie and he’d be keen to “work with Christian [Bale, who plays Batman] and whoever else was to be a part of it”.

Having said that, he says he doesn’t know anything about it other than the script is out there.

According to Routh, the “Superman Returns” sequel will start prepping next year “until someone tells me differently. I’m excited to begin… whenever we do begin... the earlier, the better, next year I think. I’m getting a little itchy to get back into Superman”.

Kane_Hodder 07-02-2007 07:49 AM

If they make JLA, I dont think the bigger stars would be keen enough to share screen space, unless its a good director like Bryan Singer at the helm of things.
Still, this is surely an exciting prospect.

Phalanx 07-02-2007 08:03 AM

I think that as long as it's not too crazy over the top...or, well done in the sxcessive in the very least, it could be quite good.
I'm just wondering if the title "Justice" ties it into either the comic series of the same title, which is an alternate future kinda title running at the moment, or, the more smallville related stuff, their "team up" episode with the group of the flash, superman, cyborg (of teen titans origin) green arrow and aquaman...
- team dynamic in the smallville series worked quite well, and given the finances, not to mention appearances by the martian manhunter...I'm sure that the producers of that show could make something pretty decent.

If not..yeah, I like how singer does the "supergroup" thing...could work.

Villains? that's a pretty big barrel...even if you consider those that'd require higher numbers to fight.

_____V_____ 07-03-2007 08:32 PM

Meantime, speaking of all things Caped Crusader, IGN asked Christian ‘Batman’ Bale whether he’ll be taking part in the upcoming Justice League movie. According to the one-time American Psycho, he’d indeed be keen to kick it with Superman, Aquaman and Wonder Woman in the one film.

“It's like I was saying to Chris [Nolan] -- I'll be probably doing this in dinner theater somewhere in my 50s, so I won't knock it. Because who knows where I'll end up?"

http://www.moviehole.net/news/200707...vs_batman.html

Brandon Routh & Christian Bale have given their green lights...

any guesses to who Aquaman and Wonder Woman will be?

I think there will be more superheroes, but lets wait for more details to appear.:D

Doc Faustus 07-03-2007 09:43 PM

There'd better be. Martian Manhunter?

ferretchucker 07-04-2007 08:51 AM

the trouble with doing this, is it crosses over a LOT of stories, and with flash and wonderwoman lined up, this could pose serious threats to their stories, as it could to a possible longer batman and superman series. I think they should wait and get all the others out of the way, do a GL and MM film and whoever else was in the justice league before doing this, then treat it as the closing story.

_____V_____ 07-04-2007 08:53 AM

From the buzz overheard, there's a pretty strong possibility of these superheroes in it :-

Superman

Batman

Wonder Woman

Aquaman

Green Lantern

The Flash

Martian Manhunter

Hawkgirl

But, your guess is as good as mine, Doc. It could be any or all of those mentioned above, depending on what the final draft and the director decide, of course.

Doc Faustus 07-04-2007 10:07 AM

I think it will probably end up being all of the above mentioned but Hawkgirl. I don't know if the Flash's story will be substantial enough to give him a movie and the Green Lantern's origin can be explained in all of two or three minutes. I wish there was a chance of the Green Arrow.

neverending 07-04-2007 10:16 AM

I've been waiting decades for a Green Lantern movie, so it would be cool to see him in a JLA film. Also would be cool to see the Martian Manhunter.

Hey, while they're at it, how about a Justic Society film- when it was at its biggest, with about 24 members.

Okay- it was just a thought.

_____V_____ 07-04-2007 10:20 AM

They are estimating that making this movie will incur a cost not less than $200 million, at least. Thats counting the superheroes, the villains against em, and the CGI of course.

And it would need a director who's well versed with the comics. Otherwise, there wont be any justice to the script.

I am for a new director, other than Singer or Nolan. Someone with a fresh approach to the script, and who doesnt bow down to studio pressures.

Of course, thats easier said than done.

Dante'sInferno 07-04-2007 10:25 AM

I hope Gambit is in this.BRING THE FUCKER!

_____V_____ 07-04-2007 10:26 AM

umm Gambit in JLA? Dont think thats possible, Dante.;)

I know. This is probably his last chance to be in a movie.Damn it...

_____V_____ 07-04-2007 10:34 AM

With the X-Men franchise slotted for 3 more sequels, I m pretty confident he ll pop up in X-Men 4.

But lets talk JLA here. This is obviously much bigger than X-Men.:D

Kane_Hodder 07-04-2007 11:22 PM

This is surely going to be exciting, but they have to release it after the Superman and Batman sequels, or it won't be as effective plus it will ruin the other two.
To make some sort of continuity, have a reference to the JLA in the Superman and Batman sequel films maybe.
I don't know, but that could refer to some kind of build-up to the JLA film, considering Warner Bros is making all 3 of them.

Doc Faustus 07-05-2007 01:05 PM

I also hope they have a good villain to work with. They should just dust off the old school Legion of Doom. John Goodman as Gorilla Grodd.

Kane_Hodder 07-05-2007 09:46 PM

It could put an angle to the whole Superman vs Batman idea Warner's been toying around for quite a while. Maybe that will be the opening sequence of this film.

Latest scoop by aintitcool.com -

"...As I was taking the Amtrak Surfliner down to San Diego for the 'Con yesterday, I happened to look across the aisle and spotted a gentleman reading a script. It was some sort of JUSTICE LEAGUE project. Live or animated, I do not know...

[Someone’s identity removed for their own protection]

I know that Superman, Batman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Jon Stewart all appear in the script.

Maxwell Lord, OMAC, and someone named Talia (Al Ghul?) all appear. One of the OMACs is referred to as "Beta", so the story may involve the start of the OMAC project...
"

Interesting.

I have a feeling David Goyer's SUPER MAX will come out first, and it sounds cooler.

from imdbpro:
Oliver Queen, a.k.a the arrow-wielding super-hero Green Arrow, is framed for a crime he didn't commit and subsequently sent to a special maximum security prison. Inside, he has to work with some of his nemeses in order to escape and clear his name.

It's slated for 2010, but there is no cast yet attached and Goyer still (at least as far as I know) hasn't finished the script. You'll know Goyer as screenwriter of Dark City, all the Blade flix, and Batman Begins, among others. He's pretty damned solid.

Doc Faustus 07-27-2007 05:19 PM

OMACs...Green Arrow based prison break? No Grodd? No Brainiac? No Starro?

_____V_____ 08-10-2007 07:27 AM

Word on the street is that Happy Feet helmer George Miller is primed to direct the planned Justice League of America flick that's in development at Warner Bros. Furthermore, there are rumblings that the other contender is McG, the Charlie's Angels director who just signed a three flick deal with the studio.

Both LatinoReview.com and Collider.com appear to cite the same source, one who previously tipped the signing of Marc Forster for the next Bond flick, in naming Miller as the top candidate.

Collider scoops that Superman, Batman, The Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern are all top character choices for the movie. And rumor has it that Warner Bros., in a dramatic move, is planning to kill off one of the superheroes in the film.

The site's insider has also heard that Justice League is currently being favored over a Superman Returns sequel, so Brandon Routh would reprise his role in the Justice League flick before appearing in any additional Superman movies.

The association of the director of Happy Feet with Justice League may not immediately inspire confidence with fans not aware of Miller's full filmography. Additionally, he is the writer-director of the Mad Max films, Babe and Lorenzo's Oil. Miller also directed The Witches of Eastwick and the fourth chapter of Twilight Zone: The Movie.

McG's possible involvement in the project is tipped by IESB.net.

A couple of years back, you’ll recall, Ryan Reynolds was in talks to play ‘The Flash’ in David Goyer’s film adaptation of the DC comic.

When Goyer left the project, assumingly so did funny man Reynolds.

That doesn’t mean the brothers Warner aren’t still keen on having Reynolds play the character though – even if it’s for the “Justice League of America” movie; the ‘Superfriends’ united film that’ll see the character share the screen with such caped luminaries as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.

Reynolds talked to MTV about the possibility of him wearing the red tights and the “Smokin’Aces” star gave a rather interesting answer. Sounds to me like someone’s had a chat to him about coming onboard.

“I don't really know how much I'm allowed to talk about that stuff. But I'm sure they'll figure out something. It's no secret that they have a JLA script and it's a project that's in development – the contents of which, who knows. We'll see."

Update! : Yes, its true that Brandon Routh and Christian Bale won't be starring as Superman and Batman, respectively, in the "Justice League" movie - but they will both still be starring in the stand-alone "Superman" and "Batman" sequels. So don't fret fans, there will only be a new Bats and Supes for the team-up movie.

A source at Warner Bros this morning let slip that the "Justice League" movie is just as full-steam ahead as the rumours suggest it is. It will definitely be up next year.

A casting director for the movie will be onboard next week and it's then that they'll be going after their tighted strongmen.

Director George Miller ("Mad Max") has some ideas who he'd like to cast as Batman and Superman but naturally, they mightn't be the same faces the WB want.

So within the next month we should start seeing a few announcements about the movie.

Meanwhile, our friends at IESB had a chat to Christian Bale who confirmed that he hasn't been asked back to don the tar cape.

Oh! and I'm already losing my interest about this project!
I don't care about the "Superman" role but it'll be disappointing to see someone other than Bale is trying to play the "Bat Man"!
Nolan gave a totally unique kind of look to the Bat Man series and specially with the characters of it by remarkable castings.

anyway, is there any possibilities of a "Bat Man &/Vs Super Man" movie??

OnTheLam 08-22-2007 05:00 PM

WB need to hold their horses. It would be weird if they recasted Superman and Batman for a JLA movie and then continue to release Synger and Nolan's Superman and Batman movies seperate from this.

Who would make good villians for a Justice League movie? Darkseid maybe?

_____V_____ 08-26-2007 10:45 AM

This news might surprise a few of you out there...

It seems there will be some CGI or motion-capture stuff going on – but according to IESB, only some aspects of the film (like underwater scenes) will be filmed that way and the rest will be live-action – meaning, yes, there will be actors needed to play the legendary line-up.

And you’ll never believe who has been offered the chance to don Superman’s red and blue tights – and quite frankly, I love it! – none other than TVs Clark Kent, Tom Welling. IESB says several sources have informed them that the “Smallville” star has been offered the gig.

A WB source this morning backed up the news – to a degree, without confirming it; simply hinting that Welling may have been discussed – so if it comes off, fans shouldn’t be too pissed about the Superman switcheroo for this movie. (Not sure how they’d work this into “Smallville” though). Keep your address book set to IESB whilst they try and chase up a confirmation.

Now how are they going to not cheese off Batman fans though? Cast Adam West?

_____V_____ 08-29-2007 08:57 AM

According to a scooper for IESB – as the site reminds readers, take it with a grain of salt until they gather up more intel – Laurence Fishburne may be the first choice to play The Martin Manhunter in the forthcoming (and much talked about) “Justice League of America” movie.

If true – and it’s possible, considering the Fish worked with the studio on the uber successful “Matrix” movies” – Fishburne would make a great Manhunter. But man, isn’t he getting sick of the comic book stuff yet? This year alone he’s already lent his lungs to both “Fantastic Four : Rise of the Silver Surfer” and “TMNT”. Still, I suppose he hasn’t got to wear a rubber suit yet. And until you have, you’re not quite a bona-fide superfreak.

Though nothing’s been confirmed yet, the word is Tom Welling is the favourite to play Superman in the movie, whist Ryan Reynolds will be suiting as The Flash. You can now add Fishburne to the rumour pile.

Kane_Hodder 08-29-2007 10:16 AM

Very weird casting, if you ask me. If the film is to work, it will largely depend on the chemistry of the actors onscreen. Unless there is a powerful villain or challenge lined up, I see this one as a potential disaster.

Aug 30, 2007

Rumors about the live-action Justice League of America movie are inundating the Internet these days, and will likely only get more heated before the Warner Bros. film goes before cameras in early 2008.

IESB.net has been the first outlet to report most of these rumors, which they point out are just that: unsubstantiated rumors. First, they reported a few days ago that Smallville star Tom Welling was going to play Superman in JLA, but that was denied by the series' exec producer Al Gough in a statement to the SupermanHomepage.com.

IESB also clarified an earlier report that JLA would be an all motion-capture production; they now claim that it will be partially mo-cap, most likely for the alien villains in the film. Speaking of them, the site also says the villains will include white Martians, the OMACs, as well as Maxwell Lord and Talia Al Ghul of the Checkmate agency.

The Martian Manhunter is also said to be in the film, with IESB claiming that none other than the voice of the Silver Surfer himself, Laurence Fishburne, is being considered for the role.

Other casting possibilities mentioned by the site include "Jake Gyllenhaal, Leo DiCaprio, Jessica Biel. Mel Gibson is liked for Max Lord. Scarlett Johanssen for Talia. Bruce Willis was mentioned for Lex [Luthor]." Earlier buzz suggested that Batman will never be seen as Bruce Wayne during the story, which is why it might be easier for Warners to recast the role with a new actor rather than pay Christian Bale to do it.

Gibson is an interesting rumored contender, given his past relationship with both Warners and rumored JLA director George Miller. IESB claims DiCaprio might be up for Aquaman. (Better not tell Vincent Chase that!)

More news as soon as the rumors are confirmed...watch this thread closely.

Doc Faustus 09-01-2007 09:02 AM

Scarlett as Talia? Sounds kind of risky. Bruce Willis would make a cool Lex Luthor, though. Martian material is also good.

the_real_linda 09-01-2007 04:50 PM

ive got my fingers crossed at tom welling as superman..... just let the dude be in the film CW please.... poor guy.... and with jla storyline in smallville it makes sense

PhilnEdee 09-02-2007 06:54 AM

With the casting issues and lack of interest from Bale...to me...the best possible scenario would be to just take it from Smallville and uses the young characters/actors from the show. Superman, Aqua(man), Cyborg, Flash, Green Arrow...run with that, add a young Wonder Woman, and a young Batman, has limitless sequel possibilities. I don't see any of the big names (other than possibly Reynolds as the Flash) getting on board for this. Though I think its chances are thin, I would personally love to see this movie come off.

Kane_Hodder 09-06-2007 06:50 AM

I heard that it would be an animated cgi film with voice-overs. Is this true?

Its a live-action movie. Actors and actresses would be in it, except for certain sequences which will be CGI-based (ala Beowulf, The Matrix etc.).

The casting is going on right now in 3 cities as we speak. More details soon.

According to Obsessed with Film, the much-talked about “Justice League” film is set to lens in Australia.

No big surprise, I suppose, considering Aussie George Miller (“Mad Max”, “Happy Feet”) is directing the movie.

And Miller has roped in some true professionals to help prep the production – “Nikki Barrett (Baz Luhrmann’s Australia, The Proposition) [has been] hired to handle the casting in Australia. Ronna Kress (Beowulf, The Mummy 3) will oversee the entire casting process. Oscar-winner Barrie M. Osborne (The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix) will take on producing duties; he’ll be joined by Miller’s partner Doug Mitchell.”

Now that doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ll be seeing Aussies playing the main heroes but it’s likely to open up a few doors for local actors in the supporting actor arena.

With ‘’Wolverine’’ about to start filming down under and now ‘’Justice League of America’’, Australia’s gonna see an influx of crime hitting Sydney in the next few months…. But thankfully, some tighted heroes are on hand to combat the seedy and scummish.

Psycom5k 09-10-2007 09:59 PM

This movie is probably going to fail, although I hope it doesn't. The problem with it is, its going to have so many great heros and only an hour and a half to work with them, obviously the comic works out fine because issues come out monthly, but the movie is going to have to sacrifice time building a background for at least the more unknown heros(to those who know nothing more about comic super heros other than the movies). which means they will have less time being able to focus on the actual story.
I am a true fan of JLA and I hope the movie turns out awesome, i just don't think it will.

_____V_____ 09-17-2007 08:55 PM

IESB.net claims that Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling (Fracture) is rumored to be Warner Bros.' first choice to play Batman in their planned live-action Justice League of America movie.

The site adds, however, that it cannot confirm this and that they don't know if Gosling has been approached or is even interested. That said, he is reportedly the studio's favorite to don the cowl in the superhero team-up flick.

_____V_____ 09-21-2007 07:21 PM

September 20, 2007

After months of rumors online, George Miller has been confirmed as the director of Warner Bros.' planned live-action Justice League of America movie, which will go before cameras by early 2008.

Variety reports that JLA, "which is in the initial phases of casting, is a pre-strike priority for the studio, which needs a superhero tentpole in 2009." JLA will not be a motion-capture film as previously reported, but rather an effects heavy live-action film.

JLA has proven to be a complicated process for Warners given its already established Batman and Superman franchises. Variety confirmed that "the next installment in the Superman franchise has taken a backseat to Justice League in part because Warners is so keen on the Justice League script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney."

The JLA roster will reportedly include Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and Aquaman. As for casting, Variety's sources informed them that Christian Bale and Brandon Routh probably won't be in the film as Batman and Superman, respectively.

There's still a very distinct possibility, however, that JLA could fall apart in the next few months. As Variety points out, "The project is so complicated -- and casting dependent -- that even those deeply involved in the project are holding their breath until production begins."
