Eli at Hostel II
 

I just returned from a screening of Hostel 2 at the Dome in Hollywood and I sat directly behind Eli Roth. I accidentally kicked the back of his seat a few times. Anyway, it was really interesting to watch him. He wasn't watching the movie, he was watching the crowd. And I always knew when a money scene was coming because Eli would lean forward and really start scanning the crowd in anticipation for their reaction. It was a pretty neat experience.

BTW, I thought the movie was excellent. Despite what all the haters say I am constantly being impressed by Eli. I can't wait to see what he does next.

How can you watch Hostel 2 and Eli Roth at the same time?:)

I also saw the new Hostel and enjoyed it much more then the first one. I will not give anything away except that if you did not like the first one, there would probably be noe reason for you to see the second.

Eli is definitely improving as a filmmaker. Unfortunately, people have pigeonholed him into the "torture" horror genre that so many people hate these days. Hopefully he will make something in a different genre soon so that people can see he isn't entirely one dimensional.

Yeah, I agree. Just because he did two torutre films, does not mean he will continue to do so. I mean, look at Cabin Feaver, that movie was good and he has talked about upcoming movies not having to do with torture.

He reminds me a lot of the origninal horror directors, and when they first got started and all the flack they got from their movies. Hell, Wes Craven's Last House On the Left was completly forgotten for being so distasteful, and look at him now.

See even though I like some King films, most if not all have received a slating, generally.

Could Eli finally produce a GREAT movie made from a King book? Or could this be the stinker he will eternally be remebered for? I hope not, as I have much respect for the guy as a film maker (although on the dvd extras he comes across as an arrogant knob).

I often fantasise of having one of my books being made into a movie. One especially, and I think Eli would do a great job, even though there is a torture scene in it similar to Hostel (book was written in 2001 - please note! As apparently it has a nod to 'Supernatural' too- something I have never watched). As long as good old Bruce C was the lead and I got a cameo, who cares who the directer is!

Hostel is great and I enjoyed Cabin Fever - when the guy from Boy Meets World is fingering the girl under the blanket. At least, he THINKS he is... (giggles at memory)

The first one definitely had its problems, lots of them, but also had its moments. I will see the second one.
I actually prefer Cabin Fever to Hostel; its fun. I think Roth has some potential as a director and he is obviously a genuine horror fan. As far as Cell goes, its one of the few King books I read and thought immediately would make a good movie. I think he will probably do a pretty good job; it couldn't be worse then some of the others....:p (personally I already think there has been at least two great movies from King books, The Dead Zone and Stand by Me). I doubt it will be great, because as entertaining as Cell is, its not really a great book in my opinion.

People saying it's all T&A simply don't get it. It's an indictment of the Ugly American. Like when the boys are told that the women are hungry for men because they lost so many of thier men in "the war"... there hasn't been a war in Slovokia. It's playing on American ignorance of European current affairs - which is quite valid given the response by so many on this site.

So I guess the people that didn't like it just didn't understand it....? ;)

I "got" it, but I just don't believe Roth did it very effectively. I think it was too ambitious for him to be honest, he was trying to make a smarter movie than he was capable of at the time. I applaud the attempt, but yes, the first part does come across as sex over substance. It was just boring, in the hands of a more experienced filmmaker it could have been very effective, but it just wasn't in the hands of this one. I liked a lot of it, and I respect Roth because I do think he has great potential. He's just not there yet.

it really was.... even the so called scary parts were totally tearing funny... wont be to none horror fans but from the amount of film wev all seen its a total cliche film now.... i really enjoyed it...seriously funny
