The Exorcist is the shizer!
I vote the Exorcist to be number one over the Shining, yes the shining was scary but the Exorcist is based on true facts and some of the people on the set started dying due to the antics of the movie. The Exorcist is the one scary movie that I really cannot even watch by myself. Even If I have company while watching I am still scared of going anywhere in the house by myself. That movie is very disturbing.

My top ten horror movies of all times:
Well,
1) The Exorcist , definitely 2) Pet Semetary 3) Rose Red 4) Rosemary's Baby 5) The Omen 6) Thirteen Ghost 7) Incubus 8) Poltergeist 9) The Invisible Man 10) The Shining |
JAWS, that horrible shark monster...he was the bees' knees of toothy critterness. When Jaws was released in 1968, people made lines around the block to wait and go see 'em. Jaws made record popcorn sales and some people got popcorn indigestion as a result. Audiences requested that Jaws sound be turned down because noise of Shark Monster was too frightening--also requested that brightness of projection bulb be de-illuminated because of shark image clarification too brightening. Film was never projected at maximum brightness, nor soundtrack played at maximum decibel level, till nearly 40 year of films original release. Is true story. Documented on late-night Jaws DVD story documentary.

Thats a helluva list. IMO the orginal Night of the living dead should be on there. I dont know where it should fit in exactly. Not sure if there were any heart attacks related to it either though. Still one of few movies that actually makes me kinda nervous to walk to the car at night. |
Great list, although Nightmare on Elm Street didn't do it for me. The Exorcist definitely did, though. I don't think I'll ever outgrow that one for many of the reasons others have talked about here.
The Shining traumatized me, too. Just brilliant. And Jack reminded me of my old man when he was angry (the eyes, I think) so that gave me beaucoup nightmares. :D But there were moments in some films that really gave me the creeps, even if the entire film wasn't all that scary. In Amityville Horror II, the opening when the son walks around killing the entire family, and especially when the sister tried to get the smallest sibling to join her behind the wall...I'll never forget that. Rosemary's Baby when Rose approaches the coven at the end of the film to finally see her child. The Sentinel when the gates of hell are opened and all the creatures spill out. The end of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The blood test in The Thing... So many! |

I thought the list was good overall, but it's hard to say what movies are the scariest for everyone because different movies effect people in different ways. Like for instance, the scariest movie for me is Halloween just because I saw it as a young lad and it "scarred" me, I still have trouble viewing it all the way through.

My list:
1. Alien, when captain Dallas is looking for the alien. 2. Aliens, or atleast at some parts. 3. The evil dead, when the guy goes down in the basement and Ash goes down to look for him. 4. Halloween, only the main theme creeps me out completly. 5. Tim Burtonīs Sleepy Hollow in the scene where Ichabod Crane is in the witchīs house but thatīs it. |

I have to agree with some of your choices and they are all excellent films, although i have not seen suspiria. I think that I would include An American Werewolf in London, Demons, Friday the 13th. Hell I cant choose just 10 films there are just too many!
