is this movie a horror? personally i never thought seven was but apparently i'm in the minority.
|
I don't view 8mm or Seven as horror. Thrillers but not horror.

Not horror. Crime thriller perhaps?
|
Seven = serial killer movie which I consider a sub-genre to the thriller genre (Crime genre also  )
Saw = serial killer movie which I consider sub-genre to the horror genre conclusion the serial killer sub-genre is present in both horror and thriller genre ..to make it even more cconfusing most giallo movies have serial killers Deep Red = giallo (italien serial killer movie) which is considered to be in the crime/thriller genre....I think that giallo often belongs in the horror genre..who consider "The New York Ripper" not to be horror ? :p |
this is definitely one of the grey areas of horror. i would say that silence... and seven resemble the dirty harry movies more than say omen, hostel or fri 13th yet if memory serves silence and/or seven were in hdc top 100.

i really liked it. any time you see a mysterious/sinister/secretive world inhabited by the dregs of humanity doing all sorts of weird sick shit i become intrigued without really wanting to know whats going on. kinda like a bad car wreck.
|
I liked this movie, but it was definitely more of the oh hell, this could happen and I'm sure does.
If you go for crime drama for this kind of stuff, you also have to classify The Exorcism of Emily Rose that way. |
surely emily rose was about demonic posession whereas 8mm was about sick fuckers. also, does anyone actually believe this shit happens?

I believe that snuff films have happened and will happen again. It was only, what, 3 or so years ago that they intercepted films coming out of Indonesia that were snuff in nature. Around the world life has a different price and meaning than it does in the west. It's a fact that it's not uncommon for parents to sell their pre-teen and early teenaged kids into prostitution in many parts of the world. Better that than to see them starve to death is the logic. |

This goes back to an argument I've had a number of times. I don't think it's horror. I define horror and thriller as two separate genres, and don't consider a movie horror unless a supernatural or paranormal aspect is introduced. Maybe that's just me... |
what about mass murder and serial killer based horror, would you consider them thriller eg devils rejects. i classify these movies as follows- if they focus primarily on the killing then they are horror and if they focus on the investigating and apprehending then they are thriller
|
It's a fine line.
If the film were about the creation of a snuff film it would certainly be a horror flick, but 8MM is essentially a mystery in which Nic Cage is sent to discover if a snuff film is real. It's a mystery/thriller all the way with little horror overtones to color it in. |
