Movie of the Week

So you've watched a few movies this week. Well, which one was the best? Was it the firt time you've seen it or something you've watched countless times? I'd have to say for me, this week, the best came down to Ingmar Bergman's Persona which I saw for the first time at the beginning of the week and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse which I just saw this weekend. I think I'd give the edge to Mabuse. Even though I really enjoyed Persona in all it's surreal glory I think Fritz Lang really gave TDM a tighter and more enjoyable story. I haven't seen the original silent film "Dr. Mabuse, King of Crime" but now I'll be on the lookout for it. On a side not, Inspector Lohmann who is the lead Inspector on the case is the same character as the Inspector Lohmann from M.

The Mothman 03-19-2007 06:39 AM

definetly The Shawshank Redemption. Not only the best movie ive seen this week, but one of the best movies ive seen...ever.

mordrid 03-19-2007 06:43 AM

Agreed about Shawskank. Wouldn't say best ever but defianately one of the best in the last 20 years.

Also sat down and rewatched Nightmare of Elm St pt 1 this week. I still say that is one of the better slasher pic of the 80s. Great use of imagery.

missmacabre 03-19-2007 07:01 AM

Since this week just started I'm using last weeks movies. My favourite being 300 (the rest of last weeks movies sucked by the way). Most of what I liked about it was the fight scenes. It's a story we've probably all heard before but it was really well told in my opinion. I adore any of Frank Miller's graphic novels and they translate well to the screen.

The only thing I didn't like was the overuse of green screen. It was no Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, but the whole thing was shot in Montreal as far as I know and the green screen was filled in after. There was no huge field of grain, no ocean and for the most part the blood was edited in. No wonder they made so much money on this movie.

Persona is just such an incredible film. I was lucky enough to have first seen it in a theatre on a big screen. It is very surreal and deep, with many, many layers to it.

Geddy 03-19-2007 09:23 AM

The best movie I saw this week was the evil dead.

LadyFrost 03-19-2007 04:01 PM

The best movie that I saw this week would have to be "300". I went and saw it opening night at the theatres and it's incredible. I love all Marvel movies, and any comic movies really, but this one blew them all out of the water. It's a movie you really have to see either at the theatres or with a really kick arse surround sound system. The score is blood brilliant and the way they have done the camera work is awesome also.

I saw Pan's in theatres and it was so amazing. Just kept me guessing the whole time. i thought I had it all figured out and then WHAM another twist. Beauuutiful movie on the whole. Well written, well acted, nice special effects and makeup, great gore that wasn't over done (amputation anyone). Overall just a pretty movie.

illdojo 03-20-2007 06:00 PM

I watched Harsh Times. Christian Bale was good, but the movie WASN'T.

illdojo 03-20-2007 06:01 PM

Oops, Repost.

Prey 03-22-2007 07:07 AM

Equilibrium was the best last week. This week hasnt finished yet, though I watched 300 on tuesday its the best so far.

Mictlantechutli 03-22-2007 07:10 AM

Did I read that right or do I need glasses?

to each their own I guess...

For me, its the 36th Chamber of Shaolin. Gordon Liu is excellent, and its a great movie considering the shoestring budget. Recommended for any movie buff out there.

ManchestrMorgue 03-23-2007 03:10 AM

Death Wish 2

The beginning was brutal. Charles Bronson's revenge seemed pretty tame compared to the assaults committed by the hoodlums at the start of the film.

I know this movie is rated very highly, but I felt the revenge killings were a bit of an anticlimax, and that the last half of the movie didn't live up to the brutality of the first.

Still an enjoyable film, but left me feeling that there should have been more to it.

swiss tony 03-23-2007 05:42 AM

i assume you got your name from the movie title the living dead at the manchester morgue. if so, what did you think of it?

I haven't seen it for many years, but remember it fondly. A well paced and atmospheric zombie movie. Also, not bad gore effects for its day. I think it is getting a Blue Underground release in a bit over a month's time - looking forward to watching it again.

swiss tony 03-23-2007 11:49 PM

what is blue underground?

A DVD releasing company in the USA

They do some really good work - often with high quality image and sound, and good extras.

Prey 03-24-2007 10:00 PM

Bruiser. good movie.

Amalthea_unicorn 03-25-2007 04:04 AM

Hide and Seek (2005)

Despare 03-25-2007 08:36 PM

Well, out of the movies I watched this week it came down to Delicatessen and Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte. I think I'd have to say I enjoyed Delicatessen more, probably the bleak setting and the dark comedy.

swiss tony 03-26-2007 01:28 AM

watched 300 last night. as a movie of a comic it was perfect. the sequence with the giant was my highlight. finally watched the devils rejects. i think i prefer house of a thousand corpses and i thoubnt that was average. i think the flaw in these two movies is that they don't seem to go anywhere. they could've been condensed into one movie!

missmacabre 03-26-2007 06:07 AM

My movie of last week would have to be Hackers. Watched it last night. Never gets old for me and I love Matthew Lillard a lot.

Prey 03-27-2007 05:48 AM

The Wild Bunch. Great western.

Prey 03-29-2007 03:20 AM

The Keep. Unique and interesting.

I don't have it on DVD either,it seems quite difficult to find,i see there are VHS copies on amazon(not cheap). It does get the odd showing on Sky Cinema,so i would keep your peepers peeled,The Keep was based on the novel of the same title by F.Paul.Wilson maybe that would be easier to locate while you wait for the movie(it's a good book too).

swiss tony 03-29-2007 07:45 AM

i watched it maybe 20 years ago and i remember very little other than i liked it. if i can get it it would be a good nostalgia purchase. just checked imdb and it had a listing for the keep in 2009. does anyone know if its being remade? also, checked the info on the original for the first time. what a cast! prochnow, mckellen and byrne.

crazy raplh 03-29-2007 11:23 AM

I just saw Monkey shines it wasnt to bad.

bloogertag 03-30-2007 09:53 PM

Best film ive watched this week would have to be Children of men. 1st 20 minutes was a little on the slow side and then >BLAM!< The remainder of the film was so intense. Possibly the best movie ive watched all year.

Posher778 04-04-2007 08:28 PM

Kill Bill of course.

Despare 04-04-2007 08:30 PM

I think last week I'd have to say The Condemned... but part of that is because of the premiere atmosphere. My favorite kill though...

*MINOR SPOILER*

was when this girl who was about to get raped stabbed the guy in the neck and as blood was spurting from his neck and he was trying to hold it in she kicked him multiple times in the balls and THEN pulled the tab from his c4 ankle cuff to blow him up. Ahhhh, that was fun.
