Drive-In Theatres and Stuff
 

Yeah, so, how many people here have been to see a drive-in movie? I have not been since the early 90's.

Hell, most of these historic theatres are being torn down, and to my knowledge no new ones have been built because it's an archaic entertainment concept. For many people living in most areas, if you have a memory of going to drive-in movies, you have to be at least a certain age, say, 30's and upwards. For a few lucky people, a drive-in theatre is somewhere near you, and still functioning, and you can still go see a film there!

This is a special experience that I have nostalgic memories of...driving into a big parking lot (only in the evening, because it has to be DARK before a drive-in movie can be projected...it's outdoors!) with special speakers mounted on poles, parking in front of a big screen, hooking the speaker to your car window to provide the sound for the movie, and walking over to the concession stand to get some creepy sort of food to eat while watching the movie.

Since everyone is in their own cars, separated and somewhat private, drive-in theatre patrons often could come up with very creative ideas about what to do in the car while the movie unspooled.

If you haven't had the pleasure of visiting one of these places, and are not likely to, there are websites, and DVDs, and books that will illuminate you on the subject.

There is only one drive in in Melbourne, we were going to go last week when we got back from a weekend away with a rented car, but we were way to tired when we got home.

So I stilll haven't been to one, but I will soon....

There were 3 attempts to start one over here..but location was their biggest
failures.

I've only been to one, and it was for the incredible hulk movie.

There's one in my general vicinity in Los Angeles but it's still far enough away that it's sort of a difficult thing to arrange.

it would be awesome if one did succeed here.

While you are waiting, patiently waiting, you can always check out some movies...a film we were discussing yesterday, Curtis Harrington's "Ruby," takes place at a HAUNTED drive-in theatre in the 1950's, so you get your ghost movie and you get to see the whole scenario of what drive-in theatres were in their heyday. In fact this movie is what got me thinking about it...

Back in the 70's there were many drive-ins in my area....now we are down to one:( .

It was a weekly thing in the summers......lawn chairs,food,beer....many fond memories.:)

I think the last movie I saw at the drive-in was Ghoulies.

Only one drive-in left in the Sydney area.

I remember seeing a number of films at the drive-in as a young child. Including Jaws, King Cobra, The Sword and the Stone, Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc. Last film I saw at the drive-in was the third Exorcist film. Haven't been in years :(

I've seen one, and it was spectacular. I don't remember what state, we were on a roadm trip in 2000, but it was in norther U.S. We saw Scream 3.

Last movie I've seen on drive in movie screen was X-Men... We used to have 2 where I live both have since closed down... There was one in Milwaukee that we used to be in 20 minute lines just to get to one of the theatre screens.... It was huge... They were always packed on the weekends

I saw the original "The Hills Have Eyes" at a drive-in. It really added to the creepiness of the movie. It's a shame they aren't around much anymore.

They only generate revenue during the dark hours; and the revenue they generate is limited. These were products of an easier economy.

I understand that part of revenue aspect... But I guess if your only open 15 hours a week on weekends while it is dark and you have 20 acres of prime real estate to run movies... Big business will come in and offer you enough money to shut down in a heart beat.

I have been sleepless for the past few days.

:eek: exactly.... The last 2 days I feel like hallucinations are kicking in.. Dont know if I'm awake or not half the time
