How Do You Feel When You LOVE A Movie, But The Person Who Made It Is Scum?
I was thinking of people like Roman Polanski and Victor Salva...
|
That is an interesting question bloodrayne. When I saw the thread title, Roman Polanski was the first to come to mind. Personally, I let the movie speak for itself. Many in the movie industry do not possess high morals to start with, just some are more known than others.
I kinda think this mirrors Jerry Lee Lewis in the 1950s when he married his underaged cousin. Do you turn away from the form of art you love because you disagree with the morals of the artist? I think that is a question that has to be based individually and case by case. |
I'm just glad that Woody Allen never made any good horror movies...lol
And I'm also glad that the type of movies Woody Allen DOES make...suck |
I think you have to seperate the artist from his or her art, it's like an actor or actress for me, unless they start inserting their messages into their work I'm fine with it.

What does it say about our society though that though these people commit sickening crimes, they are still critically acclaimed and held in high regard in hollywood.

I typically ignore all the directors/actors and their crimes, immoral behaviors, political beliefs, etc...
I love Mel Gibson's movies but think he is genuinely fucked in the head with his fanatical religous beliefs and his hatred of the Jews. But I love his movies, so I watch them anyway. |
I've been known to totally avoid certain films because of something like this. And on the flipside, if a movie is made by someone I think is cool, I'll go out of my way to advocate it.

Some of the greatest art comes from assholes. Picasso was a horrible person. I have no difficulty whatsoever separating the art from the artist.
If you hate a film because you think the director/writer/producer/actor involved is a scumbag does that mean you'd like a movie because the one who made it was a really swell guy? No, you judge the art on its merits. The creation of art in any medium is an act of arrogance. It is an expression of one's belief that what they have to say is valid and deserves to be seen/heard. It takes a steadfast assertion that "I am right, I am justified in thinking and acting the way I do" in order to see a work to completion. So it comes as no surprise to me when this same type of person follows one of their darker impulses with the same conviction of "I am right, I am justified in thinking and acting the way I do." It is miraculous to me that so many people who pursue their passion to create are still fine and decent people. The percentage of true mutherfuckers in art and entertainment is relatively small. |
Oh, I love avoiding things created by real jerks, though! It makes me happy.

My favorite Polanski rip is on Family Guy when Stewie has the bully tied up in the basement because the bully stole his tricycle. His mom comes down stairs and...
Lois: What's going on down here? Stewie: Oh, we're playing house. Lois: That boy's all tied up. Stewie: Roman Polanski's house. |
I liked the Scream 3 stuff like "They fucked her 3 ways from sunday", and "I did not FUCK that PIG milton, just to DIE here with SECOND RATE celebrities like YOU two!!!"
