Just saw Donnie Darko

I had been reading about this movie for awhile, about how great it was and all, so I got it awhile back, but just have not watched it until today. The reason why is becuase I like to read movie reviews from actual people (not the critics), and almost every movie that people rate as being great, I find horrible, so I was afraid I would not like this movie, but I was wrong, it was great!

I also thought it was a horror movie due to people always saying that a big bunny rabbit was telling Darko to kill people. That is what I thought the whole movie was about, but it wasn't. It was more about time travel and sci fi stuff like that. I really enjoyed this movie even though the ending was a little hard to get used to.

VampiricClown 02-18-2007 12:40 PM

Thanks for the info. I also bought it awhile back but never got around to watching it. I guess now I have a reason to.

The Mothman 02-18-2007 01:15 PM

i didnt understand it....

alkytrio666 02-18-2007 01:17 PM

It's a fucking powerful movie. Vamp, you'll love it. Anyone care to discuss?

Mothman, care to expand on your puzzlement?

The Mothman 02-18-2007 01:20 PM

It might have been because i was really tired, but i just didnt catch on to...well, anything that was happening. wierd things coming out of their chests, some wierd old lady who writes some book that i dont really get. I dont get the whole thing about the end of the world either, and i MOST certainly didnt understand the ending.

pinkerton 02-18-2007 01:23 PM

I didn't understand who or what Frank was.I was also baffled by the movie.

BASSI 02-18-2007 03:14 PM

this movie was great,
i didn't understand it as well.

The sad ending with the song Mad world by Gary Jules was great fit in movie (great song)

Posher778 02-18-2007 03:56 PM

I understand it =)

Someone was doomed to die from the start, either the world or donnie, i'll explain later, i'm too tired.

jay o2 waster 02-18-2007 05:22 PM

It's a movie that takes several viewings to fully understand and even then you will not completely get it. I was watching it with this girl and she must have said I'm confused 1000 times during the movie.

Cryptkeeper 02-18-2007 05:43 PM

From what I understand, Frank was from the future *(spoiler warning)*, but the part where they are in the movie, and the bunny takes his mask off, he has one injured red eye, and other than that, he is a regular guy. Well this guy in the bunny costume is Frank, and Donnie kills Frank near the end. I don't understand though why it was Frank who was the one to help Donnie escape his bedroom in the begining.

I think Donnie was some sort of superhero such as when the rabbit showed him the house he was to burn down, and the police found a kiddie porn ring due to the fire. Donnie was able to get through locked doors etc. even though it never shows it. They also never show how he actually gets in the house.

I also had some trouble understanding the part of the plane that fell in his bedroom, but I have been doing some reading on the net about it, and a lot of people seem to think that there are two different worlds, and that Donnie was chosen to save the world by at the end, causing the engine to fall from the plane back into his house, but this time, he was in bed, and it killed him. I do remember him saying something when he woke up about it being a dream, then the engine fell on him. I don't know if he had to die or not because when he woke up, he was laughing saying it was a dream. I think he could have just gotten up out of bed, and let the engine crash and everything would have been okay. From what I have been reading, that was what he was supposed to do in the end because if he didn't then the part where he was on the mountain and this huge dark cloud was forming, that would have been the end of the world.

Who really knows though? There are so many explanations on the web that it would take days to go through. Anywas, I'm sure I probably confused more people than not because the movie is so confusing. Reminds me of the movie Memento. That is another good confusing movie. Movies like these make you think about them when it's over.

jay o2 waster 02-18-2007 05:52 PM

I always kind of thought that the whole movie was him dreaming on the night the engine fell into his room. Dreaming about what would have happened to him if the engine hadn't killed him.

The_Return 02-18-2007 06:10 PM

I liked this movie...didnt think it was amazing or anything, but its pretty good.

The Mothman 02-18-2007 08:28 PM

though i didnt understand it, I did like it quite a bit. good atmosphere.

crazy raplh 02-18-2007 09:28 PM

From what I've read, and interpreted, you're very close. But he wasn't dreaming, he actually lived through all of it; using the knowledge he gained on time travel, he selflessly went back in time and died, instead of lived, so that he would never be there to meet the girl so that she would have never been at that party and died, and so on.

sawmeg 02-19-2007 11:31 AM

i just found it boring

He went back because the world would have been completely annihilated if he hadn't.

But why would it have been completely annihilated?

Spec7ral 02-19-2007 09:25 PM

i cried at the end of this movie the third time i watched it. i dunno why. i was wasted and it just really hit me.

roshiq 02-19-2007 10:14 PM

one thing I don't get clear and that is 'why people like this type of confusing movies while they are still confused about the whole movie/the ending or so??':D

only good thing about this movie is it's unique kind of plot which ultimately makes people confused!:p

I disagree.

When Frank told Donnie the world would end in so many days, I think he was mentally talking about Donnie's world, which would come crashing down because of the death of his girfriend, along with his mom and sister. I think we're told that the world is ending, but Donnie's death guardian, Frank, was simply warning Donnie that if he didn't act on that last day, his world would be totally annihilated.

Just an opinion.

can't get enough gore 02-20-2007 07:41 AM

donnie darko was good but not in my fav films list

Shadow 02-20-2007 09:49 AM

I had never heard of this film before a friend began talking to me about it. My friend was amazed that I had never seen it and told me that I must see it because he knew I would like it so he basically forced his copy upon me and I watched it and loved it.

The film was different you had to think it was well done and had a creepy atmosphere and Frank was well fitted in this film. One to watch alone so that you do not get the annoying "I dont understand", "whats going on?", " I dont get it" etc and so that you can concentrate and really think about it.
The ending was great really a film I enjoyed and you can imagine how heartbroken I was when I seen I couldnt get my own copy for a sorry amount of £2 (yes thats just how broke I am).

I would recommend this film to anyone who likes to think a little bit when watching films not for those who just want to see some gore but well worth a watch I believe.

I have nothing against people that make a few grammatical errors, Im not a grammar nazi. If I pointed out every typo and every instance of poor grammar on this site, I'd never get to sleep. Besides, I make mistakes too.

That said, your post made my brain want to cry...

slayer666 02-20-2007 11:30 AM

I really liked it too. In fact, this thread is making me want to see it again. I knew I should have bought this one the first time around instead of renting it.

The_Return 02-20-2007 11:39 AM

Speaking of buying it, which version is best?

Ive only seen it once, and I aquired it though...uh....less than legal means. The file didnt specify which version it was (Original or Director's Cut)

I can get either fairly cheap...which one is the better investment?

Spec7ral 02-20-2007 02:10 PM

i bought the non directors cut right when it came out, after i saw it first time around. the fucking thing came to over 30 bux. now its sold so many copies that the directors cut is half that price. i guess its a good thing since someone ganked my copy and ill have to re buy it at some point.

Around here, I can get the original cut for $12 and the Director's for $16...

Oh, it was never the price that I was worried about - I just didnt want to waste money on one version if the other was better.

Posher778 02-20-2007 03:02 PM

Ok, he was doomed from the start. The plane that his mother and sister were on ok? The propeler (just one) was caught in the cloud time rift thing* and sucked back to the night it fell into his room. If you watch the movie then you will realize that no plane was found or reported as damaged. The propellor was destined to fall from the beginning.
