Which Generation of horror?
Which Era of horror did you enjoy the most. Be honest here and think carefully about films from that decade you liked.

1970's TCM

i would both 70's and 80s
both had some great movies 70S Omen The Exorcist TCM Black Christmas Wicker Man, The Deep Red JAWS Suspiria Halloween Alien AND 80'S had Friday the 13th Shining, The American Werewolf in London, An Evil Dead, The Howling, The Thing, The Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter Nightmare on Elm Street, A Hellraiser Child's Play (i know i missed out on lot, i think these are main ones) so i am going to pick the 80s |
I really like the horror as a whole that have come out since the new millenium (so I voted for that).
Though the 70's had the most influential and explicit films, and paved the way for a lot of the stuff we see today. Texas Chainsaw, I Spit on Your Grave, Last House on the Left, the list goes on. Though some of the film techniques were a little lame during that period. I hated when they did that really fast zoom and tried to recenter the frame as they did it. |
The 1930s or 1940s. I'm not at liberty to decide which quite yet.
|
I'm going to side with Alky on this one.

The 80s for me,its just when i got into horror movies rather than anything deeper, got our first vhs in the early 80s,great big top loading machine with chunky push down buttons and an oak veneer, we used to have to press the record and play buttons at the same time to tape anything .....those were the days:o

This is a fun and informative poll.

Personally, I cant decide... 20's had some awesome silents (Phantom of the Opera, Nosferatu, ect.) 30's and 40's were the Golden age of horror...this is where almost all of the classic horror stars got their start. Tons of incredible movies from this era, and not just from Universal. 50's...Im not a huge fan of the 50's for horror, but there are a few gems. 60's...Vincent Price and Roger Corman at the top of their game, Romero re-inventing zombies, plus a bunch of other cool stuff. 70's were hugely influential...the birth of slashers being one of the stand out features, though there was plenty other awesomes moves in the genre. 80's were fun...lots of slashers, lots of gore and the occaisonal serious flick slipped in there. 90's were decent...a couple classics, but not a whole lot to get excited about. 2000 +...the jury is still out. Most of the mainstream releases have been crap, but that trend seems to be picking up somewhat plus theres been alot of lesser known gems. I could find a handful of my favourite movies in any decade...cant decide. |
late seventies and 80s
|
All i have to say is Halloween.

For the first time since my "Worst horror movie" thread I feel like I have made a worthwhile discussion. I voted for seventy's because that was when slashers first became a trend and so they still had the essence of chill and suspense. Though I loved the eighties they just weren't as good because that was all gore slashers. Still loved them though.

ranked from best to worst:
70's 20's 80's 90's 30's 50's 40's 00's Though I think in the next 10-15 years we're going to get some stuff that'll just blow us away. People are starting to build on what's come before instead of just regurgitating (on the indy level at least). |
I'm with Return on this one (although I was the one who voted for the 60s) There are lots of good things to be said about each generation. IMHO, however, I look at the 60s (lots of people would say the 70s) as the generation that changed everything and started to define what we consider today as the Modern Horror Movie.

i went for 70s but my fav horror was in 80s hmmmm i love it all
|
Actually that was kind of a tough choice for me. I love the old stuff, but I think in the late 60's and 70's really had some good movies. Although that time had equally chessy movie (which are important to me too!) :)

I'd be very interested in seeing a summary list of all the best 1960's horror (Euro included)... Most of the best Euro I can think of was from the 70's I think, except Fulci who is most often associated with the 80's even though Zombie (Zombi 2) came out in 1979... I voted for the 1970's.

I think the trouble with the 50's was they were all about comedy and fun. It was the decade after the 2nd world war and everyone was full of hope. There was a new queen of england and televisions had just become a common house-hold appliance. Not many people wanted to be scared and such. That's just MO.

Either you don't live in england or you're school goes up to year seven. In most places in england we start High school at twelve. |

more voted people! Wheredo you lot think horror is going? We all know it's all about slashers now but will it return to the glory days? I blame special affects. Back in the days without them, they had to make horrors acary and not just gruesome and about six teenagers who always seem to go somewhere abandoned.
