Last House on the Left question
 

I'm no fan of exploitation flicks, but I felt like I had to see this one. It wasn't nearly as disturbing as I'd built it up to be in my head, but I am sure it must have been pretty shocking in 1972. I felt like technique of giving the audience a break from the horror by flashing to other scenes was overused. Some would have been okay, but it was too disruptive here.

So, here is my question: What would you think about a remake of this film? I'm normally against virtually all remakes, but it seems that this might be a case where the original was flawed in enough ways that a remake could be effective.

I couldn´t care less.

I agree on this opne. i never really liked the movie, it just leaves you feeling empty, and not in a horrifically clever way like Se7en, more like some asshole beating a kitten.

The only noteworthy part was the guy getting his wang chewed off, because by that point you just wanted something awful to happen to one of the lowlifes, but that is it.

But you can´t help but wonder why the mother chosed that kind of revenge? I mean, sucking off her daughters killer, would probably be one of the last revenge options a mother would chose. Unless she and her husband had an awful sexlife. :rolleyes:

There are two ways to look at this:

Fanboy Justification: Chewing off the genitals of one of her daughter's killers was the worst possible act she could perform on him (maximizing the pain and suffering)

What Probably inspired it: Someone during the wiriting of the movie decided it would be cool if one of the guy's got his penis chewed off.

I just found it unrealistic.

I happen to agree with you wholeheartedly.

Even more realistic? Set them up with some sleeping bags in the basement, then man and wife go down late at night with shotguns and turn the place into a bloodbath.

I'd like to see this remade, but focusing solely on the parents. Have the retribution mark the end of the first act and then the rest of the film is how this community in mourning deals the the effects of not only losing children, but also covering up the murders they commited.

Could be a great meditation on the futility of revenge. None of those parents would ever be the same.

But I guess this concept is what made Nightmare on Elm Street work.

Yeah, for a "Realistic" horror movie to be, the parrents sure acted/reacted unreal.

But a final revenge scene using a shutgun..... In a horror movie?..

That will never happen. ;)

Check out "Chaos", it's pretty much a remake and has been called a "rip-off" before. Personally I thought it wasn't good at all and that Last Hour on the Left was a superior movie in every aspect. I did like Last House on the Left though, right down to the odd and almost surreal music. It inspired a lot of film makers, from the indirect to the obvious (Devil's Rejects anoyone?).

Yeah, and to me that's a good thing. He's taking inspiration from movies like a true horror fan and utilizing it to make movies that appeal to people with similar taste. He hasn't had anything amazing yet, nothing that's broken any molds, but he has had a couple of good horror movies. Compared to the horror released around the same time they were the best the genre had.

I couldn't be more philosophically opposed to this view.

There is no such thing as justice.

I'm not saying we should abandoned laws (although many are quite pointless) just that no one should ever expect "justice" from a legal proceeding or otherwise - because Justice is an ideal that lives solely in the mind and is completely different from one mind to the next.

Forgiveness and compassion are the key to the survival of the species.

true justice doesnt really exist. Neither does "closure". A sense of satisfaction is the best most of us can hope for.

Very true. From what I have seen (news and such), victims' families and loved ones are usually crushed and just want to know why and have the person responsible prosecuted.

Revenge seems to be left up to gangs.

There was a simpsons episode (a newer one) where Homer was in heaven and god was giving him a hard time. "I sent my son down a while ago, and i dont know what you people did to him, but he hasnt been the same since he got back."

Then they show jesus sitting on a swing, satring at the ground forlornly twisiting around. :)

One of the things I love about it. I can explore the concept from various angles and dissect and really pay attention to why people behave as they do.

I understand that most people feel as you do - and I expliot that in an effort to turn it around, but people will ususally ignore any message that conflicts with their personal morality.

and as for experienceing it personally. A dear friend suffered terribly. Her father was murdered in Dallas when she was 14 years old. They caught the guy, convicted him and (being in Texas) gave him a rather speedy execution. My friend went with her mother to the execution thinking it would give them closure...

Steph still wakes up at night screaming. It ruined her marriage. The loss of her father was awful and something that can never be trivialised, but watching the execution has left her permanently scarred.

What if she had shown forgiveness and walked away only to find out that he was released on good behavior 20 years later? Would she feel safe? I feel there is justice, or at least a semblance of it, but justice doesn't mean it will erase everything that happened. Hell, justice doesn't even mean you'll feel "all better" afterward.

One of the definitions for justice is "the administering of deserved punishment or reward" so I guess what it comes down to is determining what the deserved punishment really is.

I think if that situation (or any in life) had a cosmic point, it was that normal, helathy minded, decent people, are negatively affected by intentional killing. While putting the man to death may have been a good thing, watching it happen wasnt.

They talk about this kind of thing with regards to training soldiers. The human mind, at least a menatally healthy one, has to be reprogrammed in order to turn the person into a killer. They make killing a reflex, so that the soldier does not think about what they are doing. the idea is to protect their psyche from the damage caused by killing another human.

Yep, which is why the "Liberal Media" coverage of the Vietnam war made life so hard for the guys who came back. It was the first time people saw the "enemy" as people, and the poor bastards who were sent over there (most often against their will. gotta love the draft), ended up with sever PTSD because jusgle warfare is the absolute worst, especially when the enemy is an expert in it, only to come home and get shit on for it.
