Oscar nominations...

Just wondering if everyone checked out the nominations and what they thought? I thought they were pretty fair with a few exceptions. I really think that Sasha Baron Cohen deserved a best actor nod for Borat. That was the best individual performance that I've seen all year. Unfortunately comedic actors almost always get overlooked even though comedy is the hardest genre to master as an actor. I'm also glad that Dreamgirls didn't get a nod for best picture. I'm tired of these namby-pamby musicals getting all sorts of critical acclaim. I hate them.

i was very cynical bout borat then i saw it and it made me laugh so very very very hard

pinkerton 01-25-2007 12:08 PM

Is David Hasselhoff nominated?

You hate them, so they're not Oscar worthy? Good one.

The nominations seem reasonable. I'm glad to see The Departed and Pan's Labyrinth up for a bunch.

It's my opinion. Pan's Labrynth didn't get a best picture nod, huh? Do you think it was deserving? I haven't seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I really like "Little Miss Sunshine", but I must say that I was VERY surprised that it was nominated for best picture.

When was the last time that a horror film was nominated for Best Picture? Does anyone know? Also, can you think of any that you thought would have been deserving of a Best Picture nomination?

alkytrio666 01-25-2007 02:40 PM

Silence of the Lambs won Best Picture in 1991. I think that was the last occurance.

That was the only one that I could think of. I forgot that it actually won, but I don't really consider that horror in the traditional sense.

davidd60 01-25-2007 03:20 PM

i am going to watch them, are you

paws the great 01-25-2007 04:13 PM

I consider Silence of the Lambs a thriller.

Best picture.
Best actor- Anthony Hopkins
Best actress- Jodie Foster
Best director- Jonathan Demme
Best screenplay? I'm not 100% sure if it won this.I think it did.:)

Hardly went to see any movies this year....the only nominees that Ive seen are Pursuit of Happyness, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Superman Returns.

Will Smith was pretty good in Pursuit of Happyness, but I really hope that wasnt the best performace of the year.

Gonna have to grab me some DVDs...anyone have a list of nominees that have been released on DVD already?

the_real_linda 01-25-2007 04:20 PM

pans labyrinth does deserve a nom

RYAN FUCKING GOSLING! HELL YEAH~!

Ok, that aside, I do have a couple problems with the nominations:
-Steve Carell should've gotten nominated instead of Alan Arkin
-Not enough nominations for Children of Men
-Ditto for The Fountain

Other than that, I actually can't complain
EDIT: Also, Dreamgirls pretty much got the nominations it deserved. It was nowhere NEAR best movie of the year

Dreamgirls looks pretty cruddy to me, of course it is getting tons of acclaim...

Of course, again, every cruddy musical that comes out gets the same treatment. The few that I was forced to watch were painfully bad! Didn't "Chicago" get nominated or even win best picture a few years back? I'm starting to feel sick.

Amalthea_unicorn 01-26-2007 01:53 AM

Over The Hedge should had been nominated instead of Cars.

I haven't watched an animated movie in a number of years.

I liked both movies. But I do think Cars was great. And I think it should win. But it's a damn good thing I never bet money on who's gonna win at the oscars, cuz I'd be broke if I did.

Oh, Dreamgirls was bad. 2 hours, felt like 3, and (this is said with complete lack of hyperbole) they could've cut 10 musical numbers from this movie. I say it got the nominations it deserved because the nominations seem to be mostly for stuff like costume design and songs. The only 'creative' Oscar nomination I think it deserved was for Eddie Murphey.

AUSTIN316426808 01-27-2007 01:29 AM

I didn't get to the movies as much as I would've like for the last handful of months of '06 so with missing so many films I don't have much debate for or against anything.

I'd just like to see Gosling and Murphy win. Also, as straight edge as it'd be for Clint to pick up another one(as he rightfully did the two previous times imo) I really think it's about time they give Scorsese his waaaaaaaaay overdue oscar already.

The Mothman 01-27-2007 09:18 AM

Nicholson should have a best actor award for his performance in The Departed.

The STE 01-27-2007 10:37 AM

why award the worst perofmance in the movie? I mean, yeah, he was good, but not as good as everybody else.

That's disappointing to hear, The Departed is one of the many films I haven't seen yet(glad it's been put back into theatres for another couple weeks due to the nominations) and I thought Jack was back to his old ways. Just being himself again?

I'm not sure that Nicholson will ever be able to live up to his performances when he was younger. You have to remember that he used to snort MASSIVE amounts of cocaine while working. He's getting old now so he probably doesn't snort as much blow as he used to.
