Ravenous

I cought this one again the other day for the second time and forgot how much I liked it. It seemed even better on a second viewing. The oddly comedic tone and genuinely insane characters make this one a real good time.

And the cast...Guy Pierce, Robert Carlyle and Jeffrey Jones - brilliant

You guys and gals seen this one?

alkytrio666 12-15-2006 01:48 PM

Loved it. The whole thing is like some delirious haze. The cast was well chosen, and the story is absolutely chaotic, smart, and chilling. The result is a terrific horror movie that is easy-going and sprinkled with black humor.

(...this one actually should have been on the "obscurities" list, don'tcha' think? For shame...)

In light of its current status I thought it deserved its own thread;)

But seriously I love the idea of Cannibalism as the true Fountian of Youth...that Ponce De Leon needed look no further than the flesh of his fellow man. Wonderfully subversive.

Yes, I agree. It's nice actually having an intelligent, well-thought out cannibalism film.

I remember being hooked within the first ten minutes of the film, where Guy is dining with some folks and gets sick at the sight of meat. The way that it's filmed makes the viewer naucious, and though you don't know specifics, you have a pretty damn good clue as to what's about to pursue.

**minor spoiler**

I also thought the twists on our knowledge of who belonged to the "cult" was very well played.

great movie - solid cast..

Spec7ral 12-15-2006 04:44 PM

Really enjoyed this one. I just ordered it a couple of days ago, getting it for the wife as a stocking stuffer. It's one of her favorites.

And why not? Cannibal tribes worldwide have thought that by eating the flesh of their victims and their dead imbibed them with all sorts of powers. So here we have the vitality of flesh transfering to another person through the consumption of that flesh. The Christians call it "Communion.":D

Anyway... I remember the first time that I saw that movie... My friend (former) and I were completely stunned at it's grotesque humor and developement. When it was over, we turned of the film and burst out laughing. Very weird, but delightful experience.

Never been into this one. I can't stand Guy Pierce. Hopefully he won't ruin The Proposition for me when I get round to picking it up.

I loved thos movie when it first came out.I tried to show it to my friends and they hated it but after a second viewing a few months later it started to grow on them.I'll have to pick this up again real soon.

Ravenous is a great flick.

I hope Fox will put out a S.E. DVD of this someday.:)

Miss Olivia 12-16-2006 04:22 PM

I thought Guy Pierce was brilliant in this movie....and considering I actually live in the Sierra Nevada foothills, it was extra creepy. The soundtrack was spot on in my opinion too.

monalisa 12-16-2006 04:46 PM

I love that movie. I've watched so many times and I still love it. Robert Carlyle plays his character so well. But then again I think he plays all of his characters well. I love when they are on the cliff and he keeps taunting Guy Pearce's character. And David Arquette as the stoner of the bunch. And let's not forget Joseph Runningfox as the Indian in the movie, man he is good looking!!!!

good call, this one could use some special treatment

slayer666 12-17-2006 11:05 AM

I need to see it again. I remember being very impressed with it on my first viewing, but I think I just forgot about it. Yes, a SE DVD would be great.

noctuary 12-18-2006 06:45 AM

I'm glad to see this movie getting all these compliments. I really liked it, but it was hated by the critics and ignored by the masses, sadly. It wasn't exactly a revolutionary idea, but it was very well done.

PhilnEdee 12-18-2006 07:35 AM

I loved it, wife hated it...go figure. Def. a great story on low budget...Guy Pierce is great to me...Memento, Ravenous, LA Confidential...all of those are great...now he sucked bad in the Count of Monte Crisco and in the Time Machine...but he's done some good stuff.

urgeok 12-18-2006 07:38 AM

i liked arquette too - he always makes me laugh..

could do without jeffrey jones though , i never liked that guy.

Blasphemy. i always loved him as an actor, but as a human being, he needs some serious work...

I do like thi smovie quite a bit, it has some genuinely creepy moments ("He was LICKING MEEE!")

The soundtrack makes tyou uneasy the whole time, that annoying plucking makes it completely impossible to relax... and fit the general feel perfectly.

On a side note, ther ei s asafety commercial thatplays the main tune from Ravenous all the way through, the whole time showing people using creepy-looking crashtest dummy kids as children... Damn near gave me nightmares.

Leavetheclassicsalone 01-03-2007 11:40 PM

Great movie! It's just one of those that stick in your mind for a long time.:)

I tried to make it happen, but no one backed me up, dammit. Ravenous is awesome.
