What is Your Favorite Kids Movie ?

Old - from when you were a kid

New - anything you've seen in the last 5 - 10 years

mine are:

old - The Grinch That Stole Christmas. always loved this one - the narration, the music, the seuss animation..

New - Monsters Inc ... heads and shoulders above anything else i've ever seen. Except My Neighbour Totoro - which is a pretty close second.

The Flayed One 12-06-2006 08:07 AM

Old - Disney's Robin Hood. I still think it's the best Disney movie made (although I love Hunchback of Notre Dame as well)

New - Either Spirited Away or Nightmare Before Christmas. I love both of those movies.

idk if one would consider this a kids movie necesarily, but if so its definetly on the top of my list. I usually HATE anime, but this was an absolutely incredible film.

That's a tough one but Disney's The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad has to be one of my very favorites.

Hmmm...

Old: I loved the transformers movie when i was a kid

New: The Incredibles. I think it's an all-around great movie.

Is it because it's so bizarre? If we have any Asian members it'd be interesting to hear their opinion on it.

not so much that it's bizarre, more because i find the theme of the film to be a bit too advanced for kids ..

a kid will love the way the film looks but they wont get a lot of what's going on ..

Haunted 12-06-2006 08:59 AM

Both Shrek films
A Nightmare Before Christmas (was that a children's film or a more tweens film)?

and...that's it

As far as anime goes (loved Spirited Away), you know, many of them start out being children's films or at least young adult, but then...something happens...

You know, I almost didn't post it for that reason. It definitely would have been my type of movie when I was young.

OH NOES! TENTACLE RAPE!

crabapple 12-06-2006 09:11 AM

Ummm...The Secret of N.I.M.H., good movie.

Spy Kids.

Oooohhhh! Mad Monster Party, a classic.

newb 12-06-2006 10:47 AM

I guess this would qualify as a kids movie......

You remind me of the babe
What babe?
The babe with the power
What power?
The power of voodoo
Who do?
You do!
Do what?
You remind me of the babe!

The Sinbad films, with the stop-motion animation. Love watching them during bank holidays.

neverending 12-06-2006 11:18 AM

I'll agree with Labyrinth- that's a great movie!

Also:

Disney's The Sword In the Stone - An amazingly good adaptation of one of the sections of The Once and Future King.

The NeverEnding Story

Princess Bride

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T - truly bizarre film adapted from a Dr. Seuss story.

I'll probably think of more as I go along...

Love My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, The Incredibles

really dislike Labyrinth

But my favorites are Willy Wonka, The Dark Crystal and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

My Three year-old says: Totoro, Nightmare Before Christmas & Shaun of the Dead

Cute Kid :)

The Incredibles had a little bit of everything, plus some great voice acting.
I think it rode that fine line between being for kids and being for adults perfectly, like old Warner Bros cartoons.

it was a great movie ..

i like Monsters Inc more though because of the ingenuity of the way they handled the 'monster in the closet'

i dont much care for either billy crystal or john goodman so thats a fair testament for how much i really like the film.

I agree. I thought Monsters, Inc. was ingenious. I share your thoughts on Billy Crystal. He annoys me to no end. I really like John Goodman, though.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

The most amazing thing for me was the snow scene. The individual hair movement on Sully with the clinging snowflakes was just amazing. Pixar are definitely one of the best things to ever happen to animated movies.

urgeok 12-06-2006 12:44 PM

yeah it was gorgeous ... and the door room sequence !

what i REALLY REALLY admired was that they made a touching movie (the end had me choked up) without killing off any parents, any brothers and sisters ...etc..

unusual for a disney-related film

I never really thought about it that way, but now that you mention it, I completely agree. It was an honest, funny movie with sentimental moments that no one died in. That really is an accomplishment for a Disney related affair.

Vodstok 12-06-2006 12:49 PM

The Incredibles did a lot of the same things, showing a nice, close knit family unit without being cheesy, no awful Bami's mother getting killed moments...

I LOVE the animation at the end when they take out the robot and it falls into the lake, probably the most natural looking water i have ever seen in a CGI movie.

PR3SSUR3 12-06-2006 03:29 PM

Old:-

The Black Stallion

New:-

I don't think I've seen a kids movie in recent memory. Seen clips of the likes of Cars and Toy Story and the other new animations, but no whole films. Tell a lie I saw Shrek 2, but couldn't get away with it.

Haunted 12-06-2006 03:39 PM

I totally forgot Labrynth and thus need to be punished (Holy Grail quotes allowed). I've always said that if I were Sara, by the end of the film, I'd have been like "Fuck the kid. Let's go back to the castle."

I remember bits and pieces of The Dark Crystal. I saw it first when I was really young, didn't get it. The last time I saw it was at uni, and was really really stoned. Wasn't paying attention, and didn't get, could have, but didn't.

Anyone care to explain...? (heheheh)

THAT was one of the only movies that would lock me in my seat when I was really little.
The best one I have seen this year (I haven't seen many kids movies this year) is Over The Hedge.
Monsters INC., as first posted is a great one, Robots was good...uhm, I'm drawing a blank now. Damnit.

Elvis_Christ 12-06-2006 05:37 PM

Hmmmm probably Gremlins, Back To The Future, Raiders of the Lost Arc, Star Wars...... stuff like that. Oh yeh and The Goonies!

I used to watch Jaws just about everyday when I was a gripper. Wore that tape out! Same deal with Commando.

Haunted 12-06-2006 05:50 PM

Those weren't kids films!!! (I got to see them anyway, but still! Of course, my mum took me to see Fatal Attraction when I was nine, but still!) Goonies was great! Great film! However, the characters "Chunk" and "Mouth" were very vulgar children, not to mention those dastardly Fertelli's!

Anyway... I knew a lot of kids who were scared by the first Gremlins film. I hate pussy kids. I loved it though.

That remark about the "pussy kids" was unfair, I know.

The Mothman 12-06-2006 06:00 PM

i loved robocop when i was a kid. not even close to a kids movie. disturbed the living fuck out of me when i was little. it was the first hardcore violence i had ever been exposed to.

Elvis_Christ 12-06-2006 06:41 PM

My brother would let me watch the videos him and his friends got out when he was babysitting me. I didn't watch a hell of a lot of "kids" flicks growing up. I jumped straight into shit like The Terminator and Aliens.... all those Disney style movies didn't cut it after that! I watched a bunch of 80s gang movies too which there's a bunch of I haven't been able to find since (I've been looking for a copy of Savage Streets for years).

Invaders From Mars ('86) was a movie I loved too when I saw it on TV as a kid.

Amalthea_unicorn 12-07-2006 12:21 AM

Brother Bear
Disney's Home on the Range
Disney's The Wild
Ice Age 1 and 2
Over The Hedge
The Black Stallion

The Rescuers was a favourite as a kid

tcardenas 12-07-2006 04:29 AM

i loved and still love the little mermaid. my friends and i, at the age of 20, have nicknames for each other based on disney princesses. i am ariel.. its pretty fun. basically, as a little kid, any disney movie was my thing. i loved the little mermaid, robin hood, toy story, peter pan, anything. all good in my book.

I had the proud honor of having a brother five years old than me. It was because of him that I got to watch all of the horror flics as a child. I also got to watch Commando. One of my favorite movies as a kid that was not a "kid's movie" was the "classic" Conan the Barbarian (the second one was okay the first five times I watched it). If my bro said it was cool (and he'd lie so I could see it) my parents would let me see it a la Lost Boys.

I also loved Dune as a child. That movie blew me away when I saw it.
