Tripe..!!
eeeeewwwwwwwww yuck!!

Phalanx 11-27-2006 02:48 AM

Steak tartare, escargot, raw sashimi, all kinds of unidentified bits and peices at a yumcha, tripe, intestine, heart, liver, kidneys, brains, chicken feet...nothing I really consider "scary" myself, but hey.
If I don't like it, I just won't eat it again...no point being afraid of the unknown.

crabapple 11-27-2006 05:47 AM

Um, those little snails. And actually they were very good, all sauteed in butter and garlic. But the thought that they were SnAILS still made me feel weird...I mean snails for chrissakes.

Phalanx 11-27-2006 05:59 AM

At the time (I was 9) I tried escargot, I wasn't at all apprehensive, and nobody told me what it was until I was served...of course, being young, the initial reaction was "gross", but when I actually ate it (I learned from eating grilled baby octopus at an early age, that different things can be quite worthwhile) I enjoyed it, to this day one of my favourite foods.

As for foods I don't like to eat, brussels sprouts (taste like poison), and fresh oysters...I CAN eat them, but don't like to without them being grilled, or fresh, but in ground pepper, a little tobasco, and lemonjuice, the acidity partially cooks it, nice flavour accentuation, but when they're raw, yeck...I still don't see the big deal, and avoid them more often than not...scary? no...a little confusing, yes.

Vodstok 11-27-2006 06:03 AM

Hmmm..... TGIFridays hot wings doused in Franks Red Hot sauce because they werent hot enough.... caused some weird "The Merciless Peppers of Quetzlzacatenango"(Guatemalan insanity peppers) chemical reaction that caused horrific nightmares.... Remember my thread about the dream with the little girl with the grown woman's face and the dessicated old woman who tried to eat me? yup, thats what caused it.

When i was a kid, i was forced to eat a frozen, heat in the oven breaded veal cutlet. it took me a half hour to choke it all down, while my sister stared at hers. My dad got home, tasted it, declared it was disguisting shit and we went to mcdonalds.

I got very little since i wasnt very hungry from eating the nasty shit. i never forgave my mother for makign me eat it.

crabapple 11-27-2006 06:09 AM

I don't want to get into one of those "oysters and snails" conversations. But I was originally horrified and fascinated by oysters. Now I just love 'em. The first time I saw one, it looked real gross, but something told me that there was heaven in them thar oysters. This isn't making any sense?

Oh yeah: "Guatemalan insanity peppers" --that has a nice ring to it, I like that.

Phalanx 11-27-2006 06:17 AM

I like 'em "ok", but they've gotta be prepared to my specifications, or to me at least, they're just not worth the pricetag.

urgeok 11-27-2006 06:17 AM

when we were kids my mom used to make some hideous casseroles ...

one in particular was this offensive concotion of creamed peas and canned tuna. fooking disgusting.

i didnt have any choice but to eat it or go hungry (after sitting at the dinner tble for 5 hours) so thats when i learned that with the aid of 1/2 a bottle of HP sauce - i could eat just about anything.

Never heard of it.

urgeok 11-27-2006 06:32 AM

holy shit ! its a staple up here ..

any breakfast 'bacon and eggs' restaurant carries it.

i'll use it on :

scrambled eggs
kraft dinner (if for some awful reason i'm forced to eat it)
pork chops

its like a better tasting alternative to ketsup ..
only spicy to people who cant handle any kind of spice .. but its really tasty

Phalanx 11-27-2006 06:39 AM

Yeah, we have HP sauce here...never quite looked into what it was, or what the HP stood for. I like peppersteak sauce myself, mainly stock based type stuff...the HP was ok, but tasted a little like...different...not in a bad way, just...I dunno...didn't quite leave the best impression. Although it's been quite a few years since I've tried it, I may pick some up.

X¤MurderDoll¤X 11-27-2006 06:44 AM

First time I tried sushi I had to run to a bathroom and spit it out. I think it was because the sushi chef put too much salt on it so he didn't want to serve it to customers, but figured it would still be alright to eat. Wrong.

So I thought I hated sushi for like a year.

there are tons of sauces i prefer .. and buy - now that i'm in a big city with a vast array of international cultures ..

there are several different chinese sauces that i love .. and need to stock up on .. hot and tasty.

HP sauce is like the think thats always in the fridge that'll do when I'm out of all the other stuff..

crabapple 11-27-2006 06:46 AM

I would like to try HP sauce and am looking it up on Ebay riiiight now.

Vodstok 11-27-2006 06:50 AM

Is it anything like A-1 sauce? For me, Frank's Red Hot goes on just about anything, eggs, steak, chicken, turkey....http://www.walgreens.com/dbimagecache/204407.jpg

Funny, it's in Canada, and here...and well known in both places...yet the states somehow missed it? It's kind of like saying you don't know "Lea and Perrin worcestershire"...strange.

Lambs fry aint all bad...that's more or less the liver right? That's largely what we call that here anyhows.
Liver, meant to be all kindsa good for you. I prefer the flavour of chicken liver though, and the texture is slightly less heavy, they cook rare (but not bloody) a little easier and quicker too.
I prefer kidney myself, speaking of organs around that area.
I think they're both ok, dependant upon the dish, and liver especially you really need to know how much to cook it, or it's fucked on either side of "just right"
The balls...haven't had occasion to try that yet, but I'd give it a go, I mean...I suppose as long as the wriggle-juice was all cooked away, I'd be good to go...just another body part. Am I saying I'd eat a dick? Can't say that's something I'd strive to do while NOT intoxicated, but...if it was cut into unrecognisable servings, cooked in the right way by somebody that knew what the fuck they were doing, sure...I mean, I wouldn't eat it raw like some kinda funky flesh banana...fuck all that.

I would like to try ox tongue...provided the cut was served without tastebuds attatched. Snake, for sure...anything reptilian I'd try.
Pigs trotters? Never personally seen that as something that would be very good and/or worthwhile to eat...not scary, but weirds me out some.

Some things i've eaten that I've seen a lot of people a little wary of, is Kangaroo, Emu, and crocodile...the croc and kanga are great...but personally, I found the emu pretty unremarkable.

urgeok 11-27-2006 08:22 AM

i think 'fries' and 'oysters' used in Mr Usher's context are referring to testicles ..

Yup, I know...but, I've never heard to them referred to as "fries/fry"...maybe that's just here though, where the term means liver...

Wiki says:
Lamb fries is the name generally given to lamb animelles (testicles) that have been peeled, rolled in cracker meal, fried, and served as food. They are otherwise known as lamb "balls." Lamb fries are often incorrectly confused for Rocky Mountain oysters. Lamb fries are served in many Italian restaurants, particularly in Oklahoma's "little Italy" located in Krebs, Oklahoma.

In Australia, the United Kingdom and other nations once a part of the former British Empire, lambs fries are lamb livers.

So I guess we were both right.

I went to my friend's uncle's house for the weekend when I was twelve, and there was a bunny in a little pen in the back. I petted the bunny, and a few hours later had to eat bunny chili. They had a little bunny meat farm going. That was kind of traumatic.

Bunnies are vicious...

We have a rabbit named Fred. When he was little, he got jumpy while i was holding him, i was shirtless.. His foot caught me when he kicked and it looked liek freddy raked me with his claws it took a while to heal too.

The other day he was hiding under his cage, and when i tried to shoo him out (i had to get down on all fours) and he rushed me full-speed. He rammed his forehead into my cheek, it was likegetting punched. It hurt like hell..

urgeok 11-27-2006 09:54 AM
