Be Honest....
Ok, whenever i tell people that my all time favourite Horror flicks are the "Scream" and "I still know what you did last summer" series, the always look at me funny....now is this because they are crap movies, or because they have a stigma surrounding them because their basic 'killer-never-dies' movies?
i dont know why but i love these movies...they arent scaring in the pee your pants in your seat way, but they are still pretty good horror movies...i mean i have other really really scary movies that i love, but whenever someones says Horror Movie i always automatically think of Scream. Am i a lousy Horror Fan who needs to see the light? Ciao xXLadyFrostXx |
Scream was an excellent movie. Very underappreciated in the world or Horror. Most people don't like it for the fact that it spawned kind of a new genre.
I Know What You Did Last Summer was one of those spawns. It was an alright movie, but it wasn't something that fans of horror had not already seen. |
I don't think there is any wrong or right, it's all subjective really. Personally I dug Scream but I couldn't really get into I Know What You Did Last Summer. There are no lousy horror fans... ok I supposed if you listed House of the Dead at the top of your list I'd be forced to ignore your opinions but hey, at least you're watching horror and not some cheesy coming of age story.
|
There's nothing wrong with Scream & I Know What You Did Last Summer being your favorite horror movies. I don't find either one particularly endearing, but that's just my taste.
Have you watched a lot of horror, or are you a budding fan? Are you a big slasher fan? Take a look at the HDC Top 100 for an idea of what people around here like (Scream is on the list.) |

I love any kind of Horror, but i find some movies just go way over the top and do some really really stupid stuff....when a horror movie goes to far i tend to get either really bored or i sit there and think "as if that could happen" take "The Hills Have Eyes" (no offence to anyone who likes this movie) but i would burn that movie right down to its last roll of film....its one of those movies where i cant get into it because its too far fetched! and because it scares the hell out of me...(dont read on if you dont wan to know what happens in the movie eg...SPOILER ALERT) they did not need to put the mutant raping the sister...i was nearly sick because of that! i hate that movie with passion...but if anyone out there likes it thats fine...each to their own...just trying to put my point across...movies like this are aiming for the gross and disturbed factor (such as Saw II and Hostel) their not giving us a scare for the sake of a scare, their trying to scar us for life.... thats the thing i hate about some horror movies. give me a nice, normal serial killer who uses a butchers knife any day  ive always dreamed about becoming a horror film maker....writing a horror script and then having it made into a really good movie...it doesnt even have to go to theatres, i would be satisfied with straight to dvd. thats where all the best horror movies are. xXLadyFrostXx |
These films are frowned upon by many horror movies fans because they ushered a new era of more "mainstream" horror movies aimed for teens and featuring mostly "cool kids". The two films by themsleves were ok, and just ok in my opinion, but it all went downhill from there.
I believe that the new wave of torture movies like Saw and the likes is a counter-reaction of some sorts to all these bland PG-13 horror movies. |
I wasn't going to answer this, because you are obviously disturbed. ;)
There's nothing wrong with either of them, if that's what you want to watch so be it. We all have our faves, just because someone doesn't agree with you, that's their hard lines, have you asked them what their faves are, you may think that their choice is just as bad. My fave horrors are Jaws & King Kong (original). They may not be scarey, but are simply works of art, that still hold many peoples affection. I like Jaws because I can remember seeing it at the pictures and as for King Kong, when you think it was made back in 1933, the special effects for its time IMO haven't been equalled. |

as for you suggestion of asking other people what they like i think thats a good idea... so what is everyone's idea of a good horror movie? Quote:
But i refuse to watch Saw II again it went way too far for me. And i better take back what i said about Hostel, as i agian refuse to even watch that movie. lol. xXLadyFrostXx |
Personally, Scream is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is one those movies I never get sick of watching. I cant even tell you how many times I have seen the original Scream, I absolutely love it. 2 and 3 were not as good as the 1st but for a sequel they were outstanding. As for I Know What You Did Last Summer I also enjoyed. I didnt love it but I definately did not hate it. Scream is one of the best trilogy's out there and nothing anyone can say will change that.

i bow down to Shady!
Scream rocks and its one of my favourite trilogies. The third movie kind of sucked for me, but the second and first one rocked...the only thing i liked about the third one was the video footage of (i can even remember his name) the guy from the first and second movie, the one who knew all about horror movies and the rules that guide them.... i thought that bit really made the movie good. xXLadyFrostXx |
we all have different tastes n different veiws on movies..
whether it be horror or not. If thats what you like..then don't give a damn what anybody else says. Everybodies a critic but nobodies the same .. thats my opinion anyways' ;) |

Seriously, the next time you hear a reake is coming do yourself a favor and head to the video store (or netflix or whatever you use) and rent the original first. If you like the remake better, fine...but see the originals, please, please, please! |

ok ok ok...i promise the next time im in the mood to be watching a remake or a sequal, ill pull myself back and head in the direction of the original...i do like originals...but movies that are older then i am i tend to go for the remakes

I can't help but think that the replies to this thread would be different if the original poster wasn't obviously female.
that said, I can't honestly say that I hate any horror movie. the Scream and IKWYDLS movies don't really do it for me. they seem a bit too polished and overproduced. you mentioned that you didn't like the rape scene in THHE remake and that it wasn't necessary. I didn't enjoy the scene, but I hafta say that the whole movie made me happy to see such extremity being shown in a major Hollywood release. to me, intense scenes are great. I like seeing exactly how far directors will push the limit. my favorite episode in the Masters of Horror series is Cigarette Burns, just for that reason... because I could identify with two of the characters. one of them says that he "only wants the most extreme images" (paraphrasing) and the other, the director of a notorious film, made movies because he "wanted to utterly destroy the audience." now that's some shit I can respect. but once again, that sort of thing isn't for everybody. and whether or not it's some "macho" thing or even if it's a "sick" thing (my wife thinks the former), it all comes down to what is pleasing to you aesthetically and if the Scream (or any teeny-bopper horror, for that matter) is what you like I, personally, have no problem with that. |

i dont have a hate on for the 1st scream .. i thought it was fun..
but the sequels .. and lumping it together with last summer .. its movies for kids, staring kids .. that is not the recipe for my favorite horror. |

erm...em a female so does my reply count?? I found no offense to the rape scene..why? cos it was only a movie and its reality ..whether we wish to admit and visualise it or not...it happens. Its actually good for ppl out there to see how much pain and suffering a rape victim goes through. How many objections were made to the scene in the green mile when the 2 girls bodies were shown.? The most taboo thing to me ..is a child murder/rapist/etc and these are being shown on televison via prgrammes like law and order .S.V.U etc. You can't have a storyline without a story. I think its hypocritical for a horror fan especially ..to sit there and cheer for some scenes in some movies and on the same token ..criticiise a scene in another. |

What Scream spawned was a new generation of self-aware, knowing 'party' horror movies - specifically aimed at excitable teenyboppers and self-aware, knowing twentysomethings.
This safely in place, Kevin Williamson then went on to further irony in his I Know What You Did Last Summer, then thankfully fell pretty much flat on his face with Teaching Mrs Tingle and Cursed (another collaboration with sellout hack Wes Craven) after the irritating teen-angst drama series Dawson's Creek. Things are kind of steadying themselves now with the arrival of nasty, torture mainstream horror (Hostel, Saw et al) that doesn't need to seep itself in clever references, so it will be interesting to see where the mainstream genre goes from here. Perhaps the likes of Williamson can adapt his style, or maybe he will just fade away like Craven should have done years ago when he stopped making decent films. |

do you think the current nod to the old grindhouse flicks will continue and influence the immediate future of horror films, or do you think it will be a blip on the radar ? i'm not sure if it will become the new level of acceptance or if it will spur on some kind of morality force backlash. usually this kind of thing will exist for a while before the powers that be get wind of it (being the least plugged in part of the populace) They'll hear something from a senator who's wife caught their kid watching hostel. |

Now "Teaching Mrs Tingle" did kind of bite the big one (but i will admit i own it on DVD...dont throw any rotten vegies or fruit at me please!!) but "Curse" was a pretty good movie...not the best werewolf movie...but it did have a certain aura about it. it could have done better...the storyline needed work...but the consept was good....and i never thought id see the day when Joshua Jackson would actually be a main in a horror movie....but it has happened. PS i dont like Josh Jackson by the way...he kind of went bla for me when he was in Dawsons Creek. xXFrostXx |

this makes almost no sense. so, if you are a fan of horror, you're just supposed to blindly accept any horror movie, or to narrow it down, any horror scene, without question? I love the scene in Halloween when MM sticks the guy to the cupboard and then stands there and examines him like a butterfly pinned to a board. I dislike the scenes in Halloween when Laurie has asides to herself like, "I thought you outgrew superstition." to me, that's kinda cheesy. but being as I like one scene, and dislike another, does that mean I'm not a true fan of the genre? or to take it a bit further, does this comparison mean I don't like the movie Halloween? as a matter of fact, I consider it to be one of my favorites. to me, a true fan has cultivated a taste for what is good and what is bad... particularly in their chosen genre. |

I thought the Scream series and the Last Summer series were entertaining and worth watching. Even though none of these films were scary, the original Scream was an interesting take on the horror genre. Unfortunately, the cool teen thing got old really quick.

No, I think people are toughening up - which is a good thing, product of a harsher and crueller world or not. I think the distraction of internet 'depravity' has quietened the campaigners so far as violent films go, particularly as Hollywood is now churning out grade-A nastiness with a sheen that the old gorefests couldn't afford. Now there is morality and purpose in the terror. Which is bullshit, but boils down to the fact that the casual observer refuses to see any merits behind a cheaply made sicko since they have to work harder than they would watching the same story filmed by a cool new Hollywood director. Give the blood & guts some gloss and a few decent actors, and all of a sudden it's fine. |
to all those out there, can anyone tell me...did you know that there was a third in the "I know what you did last summer" movies?
me and the bf went and got some movies out tonight and it jumped at me from the shelf...im serious it literally fell off the shelf and nearly knocked me in the head...so i hired and im about to watch it...will tell you guys what i think of it as soon as i finish watching it. Lets see how cliche and "the same" this one is to the rest lol Ciao xXLadyFrostXx |
Lady Frost,
I love all horror types! and damn proud to say I own all the "Scream" and "I know" movies on dvd and yes they do get viewed from time to time! ;) |
I'm glad there are some PG-13 horror films. I don't watch them but it does allow people with weak stomachs or those who are scared easily to get into and support the genre. Some of them can even be decent films.
EDIT: To clarify I'm glad there are some PG-13 horror films but not particularly excited about the teenage/self-aware/mtv music video style horror flicks that have come out lately. |
well i just watched "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" and the only thing i can do is...shake my head in shame.
The basic plotline to the movie is exactly the same as the first one....group of kids accidently kill someone and then either that someone or someone out for revenge comes back and starts killing off the kids....on year later on the anniversary. The acting was crappy, the storyline had no imagination, the death scenes were under par and the gore was less the bizmall (as ive said many times before i suck at spelling). The only good thing about this movie was the cinematography. It was really down well (a bit MTV for Despares Taste) but i found it suited the movie quite well. The opening scene that introduces you to the small "hicksville" town is done very well with a lot of overlaying and cuts back and forth, in very quick sucsession. It still wasnt worth watching though....the bf and i got so bored we didnt even watch the ending. Well it was on....but we werent watching. By the time it came to the end fight, the one between the last or two last characters and the villian, "the showdown" if you will, i was about ready to write a scathing letter to the director and/or writer. [Spoiler Alert!] Although in most teenybopper horror movies the killer is the same character in each movie come back from the death of the first or previous movie (excluding Scream as it was different characters, but in some way connected) this movie took it just a little too far. Not only was it the same killer from the first movie (Ben Willus) but he wasnt back from the dead. He was the living dead. And i mean decaying and all. Now i dont think i like the fact that they used Ben as the killer for this third movie as it had nothing to do with the other two movies...it only connected them by newspaper clippings of the murders from the first two movies. The fisherman killer who bares a hook comes in as an Urban Myth...another bad move i say. I would have believed it a lot more if the killer had been one of the family of the dead guy from the start of the movie, or even the dead guy come back from the dead (aka like the first two movies out for revenge). But Ben Willus moving out into Jason and Freddy territory is just class jam. Im sorry to all those fans out there who have seen and fallen in love with this movie, but for me, i could have lived without it. It did nothing for me, and kind of ruined my opinion of the rest of the movies. Dont get me wrong i still love IKWYDLS, i own the second and am hoping to buy the first one soon. But there is no third on in my opinion, just a very BAD remake of the first. Did i mention the acting sucked! Ciao xXLadyFrostXx |
Thanks for the warning about the most recent in the Summer series. I'll avoid that one.
