Why do people like the Crow?

I caught the Crow the other night when I was bored. I'd seen it when it first came out and hadn't been particularly impressed. Now I thought it was so bad it was hard to watch. Does anybody actually like this one? I realize it isn't technically horror, but enough people dress up like the main character for Halloween that I figured it was okay to post about it.

Spec7ral 11-19-2006 12:21 PM

people like eye shadow?

VampiricClown 11-19-2006 12:33 PM

To me, it's one of the best action movies out there. Pretty good story to go along with it as well.

Shady 11-19-2006 12:43 PM

More of the gothic crowd like this movie as well as Underworld.

novakru 11-19-2006 12:50 PM

J. O'Barrs graphic novel The Crow was intense and very emotional.
I think the fact that Brandon Lee died while filming also had an impact on why people were impressed with this movie.
It's a movie that's haunted, based on a novel written by someone haunted.

urgeok 11-19-2006 02:07 PM

I liked the look and the feel of the crow ..
there wasnt anything else like it when it first came out ..
Brandon Lee had a great look and presence, there was an effective soundtrack .. a badass villian with an even more badass girlfriend.
good action,

whats not to like ?

X¤MurderDoll¤X 11-19-2006 02:11 PM

sexy goth movie.

Phalanx 11-19-2006 02:15 PM

I'm not obsessed by it as some people seem to be...but, I liked it ok...why?
Good action sequences/stunt coreography, great soundtrack, decent storyline, it was dark, and based on a comic I quite liked, pretty decent job of it too.

X¤MurderDoll¤X 11-19-2006 02:17 PM

LMAO it's goth love story, there wasn't very much action at all.

I love it, but you people are lying to yourselves when you say you like it because of the action. ;)

Phalanx 11-19-2006 02:33 PM

"good storyline" adequetly covers the rest for me.
There's knives thrown into people, stabbings, shootings (a whole tablefull of people at a point), torture, explosions, death by fire, and a rooftop swordfight...it's not really "lacking" in action. Most of the action is very well stylised and coreographed...hence, I like it.

I like The Crow,but I'm not goth.:)

Spec7ral 11-19-2006 03:27 PM

i like goth but im not the crow

meetthecreeper 11-19-2006 03:49 PM

The idea of coming back from death for revenge for love.

If someone did something so horrible to you or especially your family wouldnt you want the same thing too????

Plus it has an awesome soundtrack. My life with the thrill kill kult.

PhilnEdee 11-19-2006 04:05 PM

I thought it was a great adaption of the graphic from O'Barr...the main characters were all very strong...Lee as Eric Draven and Wincott as "Top Hat'...a solid hero vs. solid villain story. Soundtrack and also the score were top notch....no real acting or techincal errors in the film, despite many of the Draven characters sequences being shot after the death of Lee...I really loved #1, liked #2, hated #3, hired a hitman to kill all associated with #4.

X¤MurderDoll¤X 11-19-2006 04:37 PM

I hated #2, #3 wasn't too bad. I think what's his namefrom #3 looked better with the crow makeup than brandon lee did.

Phalanx 11-19-2006 04:43 PM

I sat through #2, but never really liked it...agree that the third one was better...way better storyline, the second one seemed lacking and more or less a ripoff of the first one, this one established some originality again...
Haven't seen the fourth one.

There's a few "sequels" to the crow comic that I think would make much better films...I understand there's talks of adapting "the lazarus heart", that would be cool...I'd love to see "waking nightmares"....there's a lot to work with, they should take example of the first and use the good material there's already out there.

PhilnEdee 11-19-2006 05:31 PM

Third one was Eric Mabius from Resident Evil....showed the exact same secen of him walking down an alley about 5 times in that film...
I thought the Perez guy really put alot into his character in the 2nd film, and Iggy Pop was great. Ending with the CGI and the crows left you feeling jilted though...now how about that #4 with Edward Furballs who, when painted up, looked like a 14yo girl Crow??? Good stuff there!!!

Never seen #4, won't see it either. Yeah, Iggy pop was the only good thing about #2.

yeah, that was definately the appeal it had for me too..

righting wrongs,,etc

slayer666 11-20-2006 02:49 AM

There are so many better action flicks that I have a hard time buying that this is where the appeal comes from. The notion that Brandon Lee's death brings extra attention to the film certainly makes sense, but I don't think it can be the whole story. My theory about the popularity of The Crow rests on the following:

1. It is one of the first modern goth-inspired films, and those sad little goth kids need something to look up to.

2. The revenge tale it tells is perfect for these same goth kids who inevitably get picked on in high school. The film expresses their desire for revenge against their tormenters.

The Flayed One 11-20-2006 04:52 AM

There are plenty of reasons for liking the Crow. Coming back from the dead for vengeance is an ancient plot that has always been popular. Although the so called "goth crowd" might be partly responsible ror it's cult status, it's a movie that anyone can enjoy.

It's very stylized & atmospheric; there was nothing else quite like it around at the time. I'm not so sure why you seem so stuck on the theory that you must be a "goth" to like it; I enjoyed it. The comic was also very popular before it was adapted for the movie, giving the film a large potential fanbase before it was made.

It's got one of my favorite actors, Michael Wincott. The Brandon Lee death most certainly effected the popularity, giving it it's own unique mystique. There's enough action in it to keep it fun and interesting.

So, there you have it: A unique take on a popular storyline with good acting, great atmosphere and enough action to keep it from being too serious. What's NOT to like?

HAve a little bit of a bone to pick, do we? You dont have to be goth to like it, and if you dont, then dont buy it. im sure your 9 bucks will be missed.

Oh, and just because it is dark does not necessarily make it goth. the Popularity of soemthign with a particular group doesnt make it part of that group. Just because the French like Jerry Lewis, doesnt make him french.

yeah i never thought of the crow as a goth movie - although i would see why 'goths' would like it - same as nightmare before xmas ..

both films fit their sensibilities (death and a lot of the colour black) .. but i sure dont believe either were intended to be goth vehicles.

i would never say i liked it because of the action .. but there are some good action scenes in it ... (revenge scenes anyway)

i think its a very well rounded film .. something for everyone ..

crabapple 11-20-2006 07:41 AM

The Crow is way gothic (I'll not use the word "goth") because it fixates on sadness and bitterness and lost love. It's not, to me, particularly about the eyeshadow.

But yeah, it's a gothic-flavored avenging ghost story, interpreted as a heavily stylized action film. An old thing polished up with a brand new look.

High Plains Drifter with a cool soundtrack and martial arts :)

The gunfight at the end with "After the Flesh" playing in the background ranks up with the shootout at the end of Aliens as one of the best ever.

now thats sexual harrasment..
:o

apart from that..i couldn't get into the movie

slayer666 11-21-2006 02:36 AM

I'm not trying to claim that the movie is goth or even trying to bash goth. I'm simply trying to understand how a movie that I found to be an unintentionally bad comedy gets so much praise. The comments here have shed some light on this. I now understand what others see in this film, even though I don't agree with them.

urgeok 11-21-2006 02:37 AM

go ahead, bash goth all you want !

crabapple 11-21-2006 06:07 AM

everyone stop hurting goth!

goth is SENSITIVE

has feelings like you and me

y4eah

urgeok 11-21-2006 06:12 AM

true .. we dont want any cuttings !

PhilnEdee 11-21-2006 09:38 AM

Goth, Sloth, Moth...all the same...the CROW is great...

"So you're him, huh? The avenger...the killer of killers. Like the outfit...not sure about the face though."
That was a solid villain performance, have hoped for another good one from him(wincott)...Alien Resurrection and Along Came a Spider...weren't it.

crabapple 11-21-2006 10:12 AM

Yes, I thought he was easily one of the most memorable bad guys ever. With a deep, lusty enjoyment of the nasty stuff he did! A right bastard.
