question for omcdave

Following your suggestion, I found Mr. International Dvd on eBay. They have several movies I'd like to get: Dark Water, The Phone, Voice, Cursed, The Eye, Ju-on 2, Ghost House, Cello, etc. However, a couple of these have Tartan editions out, and I assume that these would be superior to the versions Mr. International sells. What do you think? Am I right that the Tartan versions of A Tale of Two Sisters, Cello, etc. would be better choices?

Mr.International? Sounds crap to me.

Tartan all the way ;)

P.S. Sorry for answering a question aimed at omcdave :P

Yeah, your strategy makes sense. I think I'll go ahead and get a few from Tartan first and then try some others through this eBay seller. Now if only the damn Tartan ones weren't so hard to find!

The best thing for you to do is find someone who sells lots.
It may cost a bit more, but in the long run you will get more for your money, and the DVDs you dont want you can post on Ebay yourself.

As far as the tartan thing.
I personally dont see much of a difference except in price.

Hereīs my favorite Asian seller on ebay.

The dvds might be around 1$ more expensive than Mr. International, but the service and dvd quality is better.

It just dawned on me that I'm probably going to need a new DVD player, aren't I? Most of these won't play in a standard U.S. player, will they?

Angra 11-12-2006 07:04 AM

Thatīs true.

But most new dvd-players can play all regions.

If yours canīt then youīre kinda screwed...

Really, I thought I had to get one of those region-free players or something. I'll check the manual for mine. Ah crap, it says Region 1 only.

Bummer.

The good thing is that a region free dvd-player isnt expensive anymore.

I bought mine for around $50.

I've heard good things about a brand called Oppo. I'll have to check it out.

To be honest with you man, i have found that the best dvd players for playing asian dvds or vcds are the cheap ones at circuit city or best buy.
I paid 30 dollars for an el cheapo (entivo i think) and it plays them better than my 900 dollar dvd/surround sound set up.

I ended up buying an Oppo 971 DVD player. Since I had neither an upconverting model nor a region free model, I figured it was time to get one with both of these features. After reading many glowing reviews of the Oppo, I went with it. It arrived last night. I haven't hooked it up yet, but I'm looking forward to trying it. Time to get some DVDs from other regions.
