looking for film, old black and white horror
i remember i was up late one night, i switched to sbs, and there was this horror movie where a women was being sacrficed or something, she had been tied to a big wooden pole surrounded by these hooded people with flaming torches and the usual ritualistic scenery, and she screamed in a desperate scared foriegn language (russian?) the subtitles said something like, "i will take revenge on you, i will place a curse..." and so on
THEN they put a metal mask on her, then they smash the mask into her face with a big mallet, and blood comes out of the eyes and mouth of the mask.. i would really appreciate it if someone could tell me the name of this film! |
Hmm, I don't recognize it... it's probably a witch movie (Haunted!)...
Do you have any idea what decade it was? |
La Maschera del Demonio (aka The Mask of Satan, Black Sunday)
one for the moat |
I'm fairly certain it was The Great Gatsby.

It belongs on any top 100 horror list, I'd say. And in the collections of most horror lovers.

Guillermo del Toro said it is one of his favorites... It is on my list, but I have not seen it... I saw teh mask/ hammer part in highlight clip and was affraid that might be the only good part...

It's visually arresting. Bava started as a cinematographer and it shows. The composition and art direction have clearly inspired Guillermo Del Toro, Tim Burton, Peter Jackson and numerous others.
The carriage ride through the woods is wonderfully stylized and the castle and crypt designs are brilliant. Barbara Steele is at her Femme Fatale best, but... Don't expect a masterpiece of storytelling... or even a film that makes any sense. I'll forever love it but I always recommend it with a that caveat. |
How balls out is mask scene for the time?!
Twitch of the Death Nerve is totally pioneering. Shock is the best ghost flick hands down. What art direction do you see in Peter Jackson's stuff that's similar? Some of the Heavenly Creatures scenes are kinda down with Bava's style. |
