Old School Arnie

The repeated mentions of Commando in the jason x thread inspired this...

Remember the old bad Arnold Schwarzeneggar movies, back when they were fun? Newer stuff like End of Days just didnt work, while Commando, Predator and Running Man are masterpieces...

I miss the old crappy one liners, the ridiulous or non-existant premises... Granted, he threw in Terminator and screwed up his run with a really good movie (I love predaator, but let's face it, it plays out like it was written by a 13 year old)

One o f his greatest worst line sever was in predator, he whips around and nails the guy to thew post with a knife and says "Stick around".

Oh, and Predator was kind of a horror movie, so no one give me any shit baout this not being horror related.

slayer666 10-20-2006 05:17 AM

Yeah, Ahnald's total lack of acting ability didn't stop those movies from being fun. I don't know that I'd call Predator horror, but it was a great flick.

PhilnEdee 10-20-2006 05:57 AM

Worst one was Raw Deal...bad, bad, bad....

"The system gave him a raw deal...NOBODY gives HIM a raw deal!"

Liked the Running Man..."Hey Killien...was Sub-zero...now just PLAIN zero!"

The one that just didn't work for me was Total Recall...and that stinks because if was from Philip K. Dick...aka Mr. Bladerunner.

Vodstok 10-20-2006 06:02 AM

Funny, i like movies based on Dick's novels, but i read bladerunner and it was painful, i really did not like it.

I liked Total recall... Paul verhoven has a way of doing sci-fi that is uniquely his... Plus, i cant hate anything where a guy gets his arms chopped off by an elevator.

Interesting little side not: Phillip k dick wrote the original story that total recall was based on, then Piers Anthony wrote the novelization of the movie. Weird huh?

Phalanx 10-20-2006 06:06 AM

Yeah, total recall is probably my favourite...I just liked the blend of sci-fi and action, pretty damn decent plot too, and some of the more memorable one-liners.
I think the last Arnie film I really enjoyed was True Lies...eraser was "ok"...

Agreed. Eraser was like a half-hearted attempt to get back to the old stuff for arnie, but by then he had done Junior and that magic was GONE.

True lies rocked.... Jim Cameron can make anything good. Best character was Simon...

"I use the spy thing to pick up women, and it doesnt usually work. I've got a little dick! It's pathetic..."

The Flayed One 10-20-2006 06:18 AM

I loved the two Conan movies. Yeah, I'll agree with Eraser trying to throw back to classic Arnie, but the attempt didn't o anything for me. That was around the en of the era of true classic action movies. No substance, all style & bad one liners.

Classic Ahnold definately rocks, though. I was kind of hoping he'd do Conan the King one day, but I think the chances are all but over.

Vodstok 10-20-2006 06:23 AM

I bet if someone told him there would be some busty extras he could grope, he might consider it :)

ANYTHING to get away from that gargoyle he's married to.. yeesh...

The Flayed One 10-20-2006 06:35 AM

I recommend Asia Argento & Mila Jovovich in skimpy warrior girl outfits & swords.

Vodstok 10-20-2006 06:42 AM

I said busty... ;)

How about another Red Sonja? Throw Brigitte a bone, get her another job that doesnt involve screwing former members of Public Enemy.

_____V_____ 10-20-2006 07:00 AM

most famous of em all...

The Terminator : " I ll be back!"

he repeated that to Bennett in Commando...

Some more from Commando :-

"Any luggage?"
"Just him!"

"Please dont disturb my friend...he's dead tired."

"Remember when I promised to kill you last? I LIED!"

not his line...but
"Where did you learn to shoot like that?!"
"I read the instructions!"

"Let off some steam, Bennett!"

"Anything left for us?"
"Just bodies."

Vodstok 10-20-2006 07:06 AM

I always loved in predator when they level a football field's worth of jungle simply because Bill Duke was screaming and shooting. No one asked any questions, they just shot out into nothing.

Youd figure thered be dead monkeys and parrots in piles after that...

I think i saw something (maybe dvd on tv on FX?) where someone said the characters figured if "Mac" was screaming and shooting like that, there must be something pretty awful out there, so they were going to try and kill it.

_____V_____ 10-20-2006 07:15 AM

"Not a thing. Not a fucking trace. No blood, no bodies... We hit nothing!"

Vodstok 10-20-2006 07:27 AM

I guess thats more effective than "We just wasted a shitload of monkey and parrots.. .godamn monkeys everywhere. Nothing else though."

_____V_____ 10-20-2006 07:31 AM

yes the effectiveness of "we hit NOTHING not a fucking THING!"...

its eerie...

urgeok 10-20-2006 07:38 AM

running man is the only arnold movie i didnt like..

god - you'd think it was based on a short story by stephen king pretending to be someone else as to not flood the market with his crap - or something.

i mentioned 'commando-like' in the jason x thread - but it wasnt a bash on the movie Commando - i actually like that movie too..

oh .. i never saw junior either.

i liked Kindergarten Cop though :)

Vodstok 10-20-2006 07:41 AM

I liked running man... Richard Dawson was a riot...

I always loved that old lady who ends up voting for Arnold

"I can vot efo ranyone i want, and I want. Ben Richards. That Richards is one mean Motherfucker."

Cute little old lady.. :)

_____V_____ 10-20-2006 07:45 AM

And dont forget 1 thing...

Killian was the closest to come to a perfect reply to "I ll be back..."

Ben : "I ll be back Killian."
Killian : "Only in a re-run."

:D

_____V_____ 10-20-2006 08:19 AM

"BAD idea."

:D

Vodstok 10-20-2006 08:52 AM

"Vodwock Vs the SkeleWookie"

Better than Freddy Vs Jason and AvP together.

Roderick Usher 10-20-2006 11:16 AM

What about Last Action Hero?

Awful, terrible, horrible film that I think is pretty damn funny.

"Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers"

And the great cameo from Sir Ian McKellen as Death.

_____V_____ 10-20-2006 11:19 AM

The only movie where he and his one-liners went horribly down was the totally messed up "Batman and Robin".

The Mr.Freeze one-liners sounded really corny and shitty...the script-screenplay writer of that movie ought to have been shot!

Not only did it deaden the entire Batman franchise till then...but it hammered severe nails into Arnie's acting coffin alright...

Vodstok 10-20-2006 11:25 AM

Ironically, i have seen several places that said he was the only good thing in the movie...

i LOVED that movie !

one of the films that everyone hates - where i cant understand why..
i thought it just took the piss out of hollywood actioners..

the music out of nowhere .. the stalone jokes,

my buddy who saw it with me loved it too so it wasnt just me...

i thought it suffered the 'american fan' fate - the phenomenon thats always driven me nuts where north americans love to build up their idols - but once they are built too high - they have the compulsion to tear them down again.

"well well, now he's too big for his britches - we'll just have to do something about that wont we !"

the critics saw it as a conceited excercise in excess...

i just saw it as a not too subtle parody ... a shitload of fun with a couple of great villians ... very saturday morning cartoonish.

yes, i'm the Lone Champion-ion-ion-ion (of this film)

a lonely task .. but a noble one.

The only good thing in the movie was that it wasnt a Tim Burton flick. Otherwise I would have stopped watching Burton's movies.

Everytime Arnie said a one-liner, it sounded curiously hollow and out-of-place...it didnt fit him like it should...

The best lines were given to Mr.Bain in that movie. He ruled!! :D

i agree completely - he almost single handedly buried that movie..

Vod, I think that could quite possibly be the funniest thing that Ive read in ages.

Elvis_Christ 10-21-2006 06:59 PM

The first Conan is great. One of the few fantasy movies I can stomach.

I was hoping someone else liked it. I laughed pretty hard when i thought of it, now everyone at work thinks im a nut.

The Mothman 10-23-2006 07:01 AM

i fucking love arnie. a kick ass action actor, now the governor of California. classic bad ass. too bad hes not making movies anymore though.

Vodstok 10-23-2006 07:10 AM

Actually, im glad he isnt. they just havent been the same, especially since he is in with the "pg-13" movement. R ratings just make more entertaining movies a lot of the time.

urgeok 10-23-2006 07:30 AM

i miss arnie movies .. something you used to be able to count on once every year or so.

but like Vod said .. i have no interest in a PG13 rated action/horror/sci-fi movie with arnie in it ...

a comedy - like Twins maybe ..

Vodstok 10-23-2006 07:48 AM

He should go for 1 last R rated movie, kind of an action movie "Unforgiven" starring Arnold and Sly Stallone. It would be great for them to be on the screen together just once. Maybe have a cameo by Buce Willis :)
