The First Horror film.
What was it? What was the very first horror film ever made?
|
Well, the oldest horror film that I'm aware of is Georges Méliès's Le Manoir du diable (AKA "The Devil's Castle") (1896).
|
Do you have any idea where I can get a copy of it?

But I don't think it's available anywhere, and, sadly, might never be. |
That sucks. I'd really like to see what the first ever horror film was like.
Thanks for the info though, now I have something to try and track down. lol |
I agree with Alky up there in terms of depiction of horror, but the first ever true and complete horror movie made is said to be "Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, Das"
aka "The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari" (1920). |

But I recommend a set (and I've recommended it before) called "Fright Fest: Nightmare in a Box". It's a 5 disc set in a tin case, and includes a few earlies like "Cabinet" and Nosferatu. |

Hopefully TCM will show it. I have a copy of Nosferatu, but I need to get myself a copy of, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, soon. |

You don't happen to know where I can find a listing of the movies on this set, do you? I have Nosferatu, NOTLD and House on Haunted Hill from this set. That's the only reason I'm skeptical about getting it. |
Frightfest: Nightmare in a Box includes these movies (its 2 movies per DVD) :-
- Horror Hotel (1960) - The Last Man on Earth (1964) - Dementia 13 (1963) - The Terror (1963) - The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) - House on Haunted Hill (1959) - Night of the Living Dead (1968) - Nightmare Castle (1965) - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920) - Nosferatu (1922) + "Sounds of Horror" Music CD I think its a sweet collection to have in your owned DVD box sets. |

Thanks for the list. :) I'm thinking I should go with either individual or in a smaller set, because there are only three that I don't own already. Any suggestions? |
hmm...then you should try this Classic double feature DVD
Classic Horror Double you might get lucky and get it as cheap as around $3.25ish. |

yw and happy shopping.
:D |
Hate to burst your bubble Alky and VC...
Supposedly, La Manoir du Diable (which was only 2 minutes in the first place) is considered to be lost. Unless it's sitting in Ted Turner's basement, I doubt you'll be seeing it on TCM. |

That "Fright Fest" sounds neat. A Public Domain super-whammy set in a TIN CASE (the nerve of these people!) and a sound effects CD too! It sounds cheesy but satisfying.

I like horror sound effects records too, actually, so, if I may ask, how is the one that comes with this set? Is it in its own separate case or something? And are the sound effects any good, like something a horror or Halloween buff might enjoy putting on and listening to?

If you're considering buying this I think it would be a very good purchase. I think both you and Rod would get a kick out of the set. |
I wish I would have known about that set when I was just starting my collection...I have all of them except for Horror Hotel, but it looks like an awesome set.
