"Deadbirds....Scariest movie ever made...."
Me and the three other people I watched it with found this to be a rather heaping pile of trash. I wouldn't really call it scary. Typical, and it had SOME atmosphere. Nowhere NEAR as scary as some others. But then again... it depends on tastes. It was definately one of the lower-rated horror movies I've seen in the past few years. For classics; Nightmare on Elm Street Friday the 13th Halloween Child's Play Evil Dead 1 & 2 (2 specifically) Dead Alive / Braindead Ringu / The Ring Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) House of 1000 Corpses The Devil's Rejects The Hills Have Eyes 06 PS. Mothman, someone has. Infact, Vodstok did in the first reply to this thread. |
FrightNight
The Hunger Maniac The Frightners Subspecies Alien Nosferatu(the original) A bit of mix for you to see what genre of horror you prefer. Also check out any Hammer film and anything with Christopher Lee |
Texas Chainsaw Massacre(original)
The Burning Black Christmas Hellraiser Witchboard Halloween Nightmare on Elm Street |

don't listen to these folk, listen to me.
DON'T follow other people's reccomendations. Just dive into it with a blank slate. Go with the ones that you've heard of before, ones where you've heard the title mentioned in passing, et cetera. Browse the horror sections in the video store and look at the backs of the cases, get what ones sound interesting to you. You'll get some bad ones, sure, but you'll be forming your own opinion about everything without influence. It's mostly what people did before the internet got all popular. |
Yeah STE is right on.
Just because 1 person thinks something is good doesn't mean you will... I happen to think that Audition wasn't great, but a lot of people here like it... Same goes for pretty much anything... You won't know what you think, until you see it. In my opinion, the most essential horror movies for you to check out would be these... A Nightmare on Elm Street Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) Night of the Living Dead (original) Dawn of the Dead (original) Halloween I'd say start with those 5 and then expand from there based on what you like and don't like about them. Those 5 are movies that pretty much every horror fan has seen and gives respect to so it's a real good place to start. |
Camp Blood 1 & 2
Killjoy 1,2 Nursie pieces All got for gore and a laugh mate ;) |

pieces is worth watching for the end. it is the biggest "WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!" aside from Sleepaway camp. For the recored, STE is right, but at least you now have a nice log list of title sto choose from. Think of them as guidelines. |

a lot of Christians will say this because it hits them where they live. If you believe in god and the devil then i would say you could very well find this the scariest movie ever. i dont believe in those things but i will say the exorcist set the bar for mainstream horror .. it is very well made and atmospheric. |
Quote:
i think someone just starting into horror might need a list of movies they could actually find .. |
I agree. im an atheist, but still find it scary as hell.
For the most part, if people say it isntdcary to them, they are either very cynical or just trying to be a bad ass. |

it does kind of fall apart in the end but is still has an origional baddie and it it builds well (until the nonsense at the police station) |

well, i'm not trying to be a badass - but i havent found a movie scary since i can remember... wait .. 'an inconvenient truth' - the al Gore movie about global warming .. i think that is pretty scary .. even if only 5% of it is true (and i personally believe its all true) |

Movie-wise, not much has given me the chills. Since I was young, at least, and I've ben longing for the feeling again.
Fear-wise in real life, they mainly lie in things that can actually happen. The thought of someone watching you from outside your window, the thought that someone might be in your room at that very moment you're thinking it. The thought that, hey, if someone wants to bust into your house now and kill you - not much is going to stop them. That's what scares me. I'm also big on imagination. The one film that I can claim has given me the chills is The Blair Witch Project. I re-read my comment and it seems sort of bitchy, and I'm sorry if I came off that way. It seems I mainly due because of the way I write. I just didn't, personally, find Dead Birds to be anything extraordinary. Everyone is different. |

I also failed to mention that I have seen dawn of the dead, and land of the dead. I liked dawn of the dead better. |

I didn't think the Exorcist was all that. I've watched it quite a bit and never thought it was really "scary." Maybe a TAD eerie but it will be your own opinion.
And I also agree that you have to find what you like. Don't listen to other people because all our tastes vary. I personally rarely look at the back covers of movies because if I read them I could be passing up a really decent movie (and that has happened before). |
Here's my pimp that everyone could see coming from a mile away.
Watch the Exorcist III. Not so in your face. Very subtle, very nice. |

You wont find alot of people that dont like Hellraiser though...classic. The second one is worth seeing as well. |
It might be a bit popcorn, but I'd say Poltergeist is a good view for anybody just getting into horror. Solid, primal scares without the kind of extreme gore that takes a bit of indoctrination. Bava's Black Sunday is also rich, intriguing and fairly risque for its time, so are the AI Poe films with Vincent Price. They're not Poe, but they're all something special. And for a good exotic scare, I'd say Ju On. These are all movies that help a person better appreciate the genre and sort the wheat from the chaff. Though I would agree with the STE on following your instincts. The more you follow them, the better they develop one way or the other. You can only rent Dracula's Curse or Hell's Highway once.

I am always rooting for Phantasm as it's one of my favorite 70's horror films. A very unique style combining scary, funny and surrealism, all played out through the filter of 70's hipness. It's a whackay, freakay kind of horror.
