Pulse
I heard Pulse is based on a Japanese Horror film what is the story behind it?
|
It's rather complex and I'm not sure if my explaination will do it justice...but.It's a ghost story(think ghost(s) in the machine)on a much larger scale, overlaping dimensions with the internet and computers playing a crucial role. There's alot of social commentary at work aswell.........it's apocalyptic and scary.
|
I'm watching this tonight, but was curious of some things. For example;
Is it really scary? I heard a lot of people say this, but on what level? Nothing has scared me since I was 5-8, save for The Balir Witch Project which is unnerving as hell. Is it as strong as TBW or is it more the "scary" kind for people who typically find horror movies scary. Also, how slow is this? I've skimmed it and a lot of it seems very slow, and silent. This is okay for some films and I enjoy them a lot such as Sympathy for Mr/Lady Vengeance - but there has to be something greater at work. This film has interest in it, right? It's not just a slow film with creepy imagery every once in a while? |

As for the movie...it's good. I agree that you feel it more after the fact. I finished the movie and thought it was creepy, but the first time I went on-line after watching it gave me a "little cause for pause.":p |
"Obviously your copy had better subtitling than mine. My subs seemed to be a couple of seconds behind the actual dialogue. Minor glitch I know, but it bugged the crap out of me just the same. "
Same as mine, so I threw the DVD into the computer, outputted it to the TV and used directsub's timing option to offset the difference. Worked like a charm. |

Omcdave, I bought my copy off Amazon.com, which is where I get a good number of movies these days. I've seen Cure, which made me a Kiyoshi Kurosawa fan in the first place. Haven't seen Charisma. I'll have to keep my eyes open for that one. |
The first time I saw this movie, the way the ghosts moved just really freaked me out for some reason. Some could consider it slow at times, but it's a really well done movie I thought. Can't wait to see the american bastardized version.

Omcdave, I've seen the trailer for Marebito, but I haven't been able to put my hands on a copy yet. As for Phone, I'm a proud owner of that cinematic gem. The little girl does a bang-up job of freaking me out!!!!:) Have you seen Abnormal Beauty? If so, what did you think of it? |
Uzumaki is awesome.
Abnormal Beauty was great if just because it involved something other than a long haired vengeful bitch wanting revenge. I actually own the Wig, it's pretty good, been a few months since I watched it, I don't remember it being particularly scary but the story was really good and kind of sad cause it involved one of the main characters having cancer. |
I've made it a point to at least watch every film that Tartan Asia Extreme releases, they put out some pretty good movies, even though once in awhile there will be a boring sucky one.
Have you seen Versus? It's a fun martial arts zombies in a forest type movie. More action than horror though. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0275773/ Um, I'm trying to think of some others, I'm at work so I can't just look at my dvds. I've seen so many, I've become a big asian flick junkie in the past couple of years. There's one, called Infection (Kansen), that I thought was just awesome, very layered movie that was kind of hard to understand on the first viewing, but it had killer atmosphere and a good story. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0418778/ I can't remember but there's someone posted on here that they like Phone alot, it might have been you. There's another flick by the same director called Nightmare (Gawi) that's pretty good. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0269266/ Acacia is great, I really liked the story and the ending. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0380164/ There's a new movie by the director of The Grudge that just came on, I haven't been able to find a copy of it on Ebay or anything yet though, although apparently there's a Region 2 release coming out of it later this month, i may try to buy it. It looks really interesting. It's called Reincarnation (Rinne). http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0456630/ Plus, there is this haunted girls school series: Whispering Corridors Memento Mori Whishing Stairs Voice They aren't bad, the first two are the best ones. They are unrelated except they each involve a haunted girl's school and of course a little lesbianism every once in awhile. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0241073/ http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0266075/ http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0370082/ http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0470967/ Last but not least, the Eko Eko Azarak Trilogy. These you can actually find at Best Buy for like 15 bucks in a box set. It's well worth it. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0112939/ http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0116178/ http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0130650/ There is a fourth one, but it sucks and is completely different from the other three. All of these flicks you should be able to at least get on ebay though most of them are official U.S. releases. Anyways thats all I can think of, hope this gives you some ideas of other flicks to watch. |
No I wasn't talking about Marebito, the Reincarnation one (Rinne) I gave you a link to, that's another new one from him.
|
Yeah the original is called Kairo...I'm watching it now as it happens.
I could never watch a re-make before seeing the original first. In my opinion the re-makes arent so good, although The Ring wasnt bad, but The Ring 2 was awful. The Grudge wasnt so great, but the trailer for The Grudge 2 looks okay. |
Kairo I thought was very good. Havn't seen Pulse yet though as its not out in UK and doesnt look like it will ever come out in the cinema over here.
|
I've saw Pulse(us) last friday, and I was very disapointed:mad: It didn't even scare me at all. Maybe its because I've seen the japanese version before. Like any other english version of japannese horror films. SUCK!!
|
I think the Japanese original is exceedingly disappointing, and it's time to start playing down the brilliance of 'J-Horror' (which noob coined that phrase?) as I think it has already played all its cards.
|
Quote:
No "noob" coined the phrase. Everything in japan is like that, J-Pop, J-Rock, for their football league its J-League. It's just whats done. |
The post asks about the original Pulse, and is not exclusive to positive feedback.
I would suggest you refrain from trying to trivialise views that do not suit your own in threads. :) Mainstream horror appears to be turning away from the psychological focuses of the Asian invasion back to exploitation and gore. Recent films like Saw, Haute Tension and Hostel are a welcome change, though like the exhaustion of 'J-Horror' themes will come and go like trends in any other film genre. |
Quote:
Saw is a welcome change? Yes its a good movie, but I hope you realise that Audition featured feet being cut off before it? Also, Sympathy for Mr.Vengeance (not J, but still Tartan Asia Extreme stuff) featured achilles tendons being cut (although thats been in a few movies), just like in Hostel. To me, thats not really a change, it just happens to be stupid americans getting killed instead of asian people. |
Quote:
I don't think drawing comparisons between violent scenes is detrimental to either Saw or Hostel - the apparent change in question is from mainstream psychological/spiritual horror to sadistic gore, cruelty and torture. And are you saying Americans are more stupid than Asians? |
Americans killed in horror movies are always extremely stupid, tripping over twigs etc...that's all I meant.
However, China has some ridiculously intelligent people, and its a huge country. |
