Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages
Has anyone seen this early 20s silent?
Here's the link to the Criterion DVD on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...v=glance&n=130 Any Opinions? |

Why you little.... By the way, Zwot: Did you try to send me a PM awhile back? My box was full and I finally cleared it. |

Well, you know. Those trying to contact the King often have something important to say.
:) |
I have seen it, and I think it's got a lot of great imagery. Would be cool to have this playing as background for a Halloween party, maybe put your own music choice on over it. Make a little popcorn, mix up some punch, that'd be a fun time there.
|
I see. Is it pretty long? And is it informational, or just kind of spooky? And thanks for the feedback, I was beginning to think I dreamt this movie.

There's some really good reviews of it on Amazon that would break down its informative qualities better than I could. I can say that it delivers a wealth of superb spooky, ghoulish imagery, and is a real feast for the eyes.

it's really more propaganda than information. I'm not a witch or anything, but the ones I have known are nothing like they are portrayed in the film. I think it bases a lot of its "facts" on mythology (like the Hell-Fire Club outside of Dublin).
but, like fm2 said, it's really great to watch just for the imagery. it's almost hard to believe that it got made so long ago. |
Shit! Where've I been? I've got to get my hands on that piece. I tell you what... since it's so cheap, I'll see if I can get it, and as an actual Witch, give you a little feedback.
Would that be cool? |

Thanks Haunted. |
Yeah, that insight would be great. The last time I saw this, actually, I didn't even pay attention to whatever "observations" the film was making on the nature of witchcraft, because I was busy looking at the images of witches on broomsticks, demons, and hell's caverns. Interesting to see how people imagined these things looking back then.

The MM was so demented, you have to wonder about the sanity of the two dickheads that wrote it. (I can't remember their names right off hand, but they were both German monks). |
Er... I was gonna get that movie today from amazon... put it in the shopping cart and all... however, I started browzing and found these two AMAZING books on Voodoo.
Heh... I love love horror. However, my first passion is always the Occult. So we'll have to wait until I get some more money. So now you understand why my movie collection isn't quite so astounding, while my library is threatening to break my bookshelf. :D :p |
Haxan is highly original, combining fiction, documentary and animation about 15th & 16th century witchcraft trials.
There are several versions, including a 1967 release with William Burroughs commentary and a tinted re-issue, but all look stunning. |
