From Hell

i had mixed feelings about this because i never heard anything about it but on the other hand jack the ripper is a total bad ass... i went ahead and baught it and watched it all on and off cuz i was busy, what are your guys's (and girls's) thoughts on this film...I must say the slip cover for it is quite attractive...

Good film, I saw it awhile back. Was planning to buy it today, as a matter of fact.

My mini-review, as posted in Last Seen Movie:

This was a pretty good show. Depp is one of my favourite actors, and while this wasn't one of his best roles, he still did a great job as Abberline. I also quire liked Robbie Coltrane as his partner with an affection for poetry, Peter Godrey. The rest of the supporting cast was good as well, especially Ian Holm. I loved the atmosphere; though I've heard people complain about it's inaccuracies, I love this romantic kind of portrayal of London: the cobblestone streets, the faint street lights through the billowing fog...makes a great setting for a horror flick. One small problem I had was that the plot seemed to move too fast. There wasn't really enough time for anything to develop, especially near the end. Overall it was a pretty good movie though, I enjoyed it.

7/10

You you ever want some heavy reading, pick up the graphic novel on which this movie is based. Its as thick a phone book. Well written, very detailed. THe art is ok.
Its by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell

Good film, a little bit different from some of the other stuff Ive seen about Jack (mainly made for TV films and a couple of mini-series'). The Return is spot on about the atmosphere, its captured really well.

Decent, wasn't as good as I was hoping. Had the same chilling London atmosphere as Bram Stoker's Dracula (Coppolla), but pailed in comparison. I started to lose interest towards the end.

agreed

doesn't come close to doing the graphic novel justice.

Loved it! Really enjoyed the spin they put on the Jack the Ripper theory.

Awesome movie. Johnny Depp is really suited to horror.

I don't know what, but there was something missing to make this one a good movie, I think it was a little slow. Depp is great in everything he does, didn't care a lot for Heather Graham's character, thay could have pick a better actress.

Yah. It was slow for me, too, and I hated Heather Graham's character.

I can't stand when they pick actors who do a shit job on their accents. Like her.

T'was crap. The best version of Jack the Ripper, was Michael Caine's outing in 1988, I'd watch it just for the jolly, wouldn't you, even if, like every other movie made about Saucy Jack, it was a load of claptrap.
