Any fans of stop motion photography?
I just recently watched 20 Million Miles to Earth, King Kong, Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young... I really enjoyed the stop motion photography effects of Ray Harryhausen and Willis O'Brien.
I was wondering if there were some other classic films that You might recommend that featured stop motion photography. |
i think the origional of The Lost World has it ..
if you want to have fun - there's free software on the net available that lets you create your own stop motion movies .. i did a 10 second film of my kids mega block dragon flapping its wings :D |
You can see some stop-motion work of mine on the new DVD of "The Entity" (there's a documentary I did some stuff for). One of my favorite movies featuring quite a bit of stop motion is one no one ever thinks about..."The Empire Strikes Back" (!)

no prob .. its pretty easy to use .. i figured it out (enough to make a little clip) without reading anything in about 5 min.. i used my digi cam to take pics of gradual movement at the lowest possible quality setting. obvious hint - try to anchor your subject fast - and mark its position .. the slightest movements can spoil the effect |
Other stop-motion movies...
Well, this year's Oscar winner WALLACE AND GROMIT CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT. Oh wait, that's too new to mention in a thread about "classics." One of my favorite HARRYHAUSEN films in GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD. I always find the stroboscopic look of stop-motion easier to tolerate in fantasy films where everything is make-believe. MYSTERIOUS ISLAND is good, too; in fact, any of the Harryhausen flms are worth watching for the effects alone. |
How about Jason and the Argonaughts...I love the skeleton fighting scene
|
Don't forget: according to Tom Cruise, JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS is the greatest movie ever made!
|
LOL, jeezus.

Clash of the Titans Seventh Voyage of Sinbad |
the stop motion work for the most part in The Lost World was pretty good for the time ... dino's fighting, the environment reacting ... but i still had a laugh at some of the ideas .. like the plant eaters gnashing their sharp pointy teeth constantly ...

dude have you seen how vegetarian types GET when they're near a salad bar....it's downright creepy.

they fart a lot too... |

It was Tom Hanks who said that, when introducing Ray Harryhausen at the Academy's Technical Awards. (Harryhausen was receiving a lifetime achievement award.) |
I love stop motion. I watch Clash of the Titans every Easter. It's a tradition. I've read a couple of articles that Warner Bros. is trying a remake though...and the new movie will no doubt lose its charm through CGI.

Did know one mention THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS? I just saw it recently at a theatre where Ray Harryhausen spoke before the film. It held up better than expected: not only were the effects entertaining, but the film had a decent script and did a good job of holding interest even when the monster was not on screen.
You can see a video of Harryhausen's talk here: http://hollywoodgothique.com/beastfr...thoms1953.html |
Hell, no one mentioned one of the greatest:
John Carpenter's The Thing |
Have you ever watched anything from Jan Svankmajer? Alice might be the easiest movie to find. He does some crazy stuff.

Yes, and I gotta say, Good God! That guy's nuts. Talented though!
|
EQUINOX (1970) has some fun stop-motion animation. It's a bit of a precursor to Evil Dead too...
|
stop motion Vallaey of Gwangi
Check out The Valley of Gwangi, a Ray Harryhausen masterpiece with cowboys fighting dinosaurs...

These are good. Add One Million Years B.C. (Can't remember if stop motion is used or just made up iguana's though). |
I've made 4 or 5 stop motion shorts in my day....
The best thing stop-motion has ever generated was South Park. |
