Eli Roth & Rob Zombie

I think this will be a pretty decent topic of discussion.

Both of these Directors are pretty new to the Horror scene.

Both have just finished up with there 2nd feature length film.

Anyway, many people hate these directors. They say that both have terribal directing styles and they wouldnt care if either one of them made another film.

I disagree on this. Allthough some of thier techniques might not be that great. Both are making what I think to be pretty decent films. Pretty gory too. And gory is exactly what todays horror genre needs to go back into.

I just want everyone elses opinion on the 2 directors.

I personally think that they're going to be two of the future masters of horror. I haven't had a chance to see Hostel yet, but I really liked cabin fever. Devil's Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses are two of my favorite movies of the last five years.

I haven't seen Hostel yet, so I'll reserve judgement on that one. I think both directors have a lot of potential, but they both also need to work on a few things, Roth in particular. Rob Zombie made great improvements between his first and second features, and we can only hope that they will continue. He should just stick to making movies rather than music though.

Ditto, but I do want to see it.

Zombie, to me, is a really creative director. Sure, he takes themes from old classics, like TCM, but heres the thing:

1. Why do we care?! Some people bitch and bitch about how they want the old 'styles' of horror back, and then Rob brings it to us and they bitch that he's 'stealing their styles'. Make up your minds!

2. He does what the older films could not. He brings character and emotion to the VILLIANS. We FEEL for them. That's original.

I totally agree with you on that first point.

Im still getting round to catchin' the Devil's Rejects but House of 1000 Corpses has slowly grown on me to become one of my all time favorites of the genre. I love Rob Zombie's blood n guts comic book style of film makin'. He's come up with some fantastic characters that we haven't seen the likes of since the 1970s AIP films (Deranged, Motel Hell, Eaten Alive, ect).
EC comics molested by the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and other old school nasties. I love this shit!

well house of 1000 corpses was fucking awful and i dont see how anyone could ever like it, but its the exact opposite with the devils rejects. I own both of those, along with Cabin Fever, which was decent, and ive been meaning to see hostel.

I'll have to give 1000 corpses another watch.....i saw it when it first came out and the only thought was "TCM clone".
Rejects was a bit more structured and yes, very unpleasant....had a kinda "Last House on the Left" feel to it but overall i thought a better movie.
Cabin Fever left me with a "whats all the fuss" feeling.

Now the difference in these movie watching experiences may be this.
I saw Rejects at the theatre and the other two at home.....sometimes at home i don't give a movie the attention it deserves...usually i'm browsing on the computer while the movie is on.

it was an homage ! and the best one i've seen.
i dont think he made any bones about wanting to recreate the madness of TCM and i thought he captured it brilliantly.
(unlike the countless other filmmakers who tried to do the same thing and failed)

it definetly had some unpleasent scenes, but they really were well done. The beating of those two guys out in the feild was pretty harsh, but very well done. And the best part of this movie is that evryone is a fucking bad ass . The one sherriff dude is so frigging cool i just loved the revenge scenes they were perfect.

Tottaly agree, Zombie's directing techniques, and plot were incredibly awesome the entire movie.

My only problem with Eli is ( people will disagree with me on this ) Eli focuses way to much on tits and sex. So many times through Cabin Fever and Hostel thier was boobs for no damn reason.

At least when zombie has tits and sex it is appropriate for the film.

If I wanna watch a porn Ill watch a porn.

But If I want to watch a horror.
I want to watch a fucking HORROR!

I hated that sheriff. One character Zombie created that I never liked. Everyone thinks he's really cool, I think he's annoying and unbelievable.

he was the only character i liked

I liked House of 1000 Corpses better. the main thing I didn't like about the Devil's Rejects was the corny dialogue, like that "brilliant Mark Twain shit cuz it's blah blah blah" line that Otis says. that shit is so lame it makes me cringe every time I hear it.

zomb5150 03-04-2006 06:38 PM

I like both of these directors and feel that They've got lots of potential:)
