Carrie...
My mum said she would get it for me tonight, but I was wonderin' what people thought of it...
Is it scary? Is it good? ETC! :D comments... |
I wouldn't say it's scary: it's quite a good supernatural yarn though.
If you want genuinely scary (not gore; just a good ghost story), try to find The Woman in Black. |

I agree with skatboy. If you can find it, that is.;) |
'Carrie' is an outstanding horror movie, not wildly scary but one of the few genre films that seems to me to have genuinely human characters. Despite accusations about DePalma's 'coldness' I thought 'Carrie' was a really compassionate film about being different and alone. It's almost a tear-jerker really and who can resist the urge to cheer when the gym doors close and the water hoses come on. Kim Newman says in his book 'Nightmare Movies' that the famous shock ending removes some of the sympathy we've had for Carrie? I don't agree, does anyone else have any thoughts?

Carrie is one of my favorite horror movies ever. I didn't find it scary (but it takes a lot to scare me anyway)
I can see how it would be scary to some people though. Even I jumped a few times. But it's soooo well done. You gotta see the original with Sissy Spacek though. There is a made for TV remake that I think was done in 2002. It was good but just wasn't the same. :-D -Liz |
I didnt really enjoy it as much as I thought I would. The ending was pretty awesome, that goes without saying, but overall as a movie I didnt think much of it. Not that it wasnt a well made movie....peraps thats why Im not a fan, it was too well made. It made you feel for Carrie so well, I found it very upsetting. Not scary, but very upsetting to me. Ive only seen it once, and I have doubts on wether I'll watch it again.

Especially the shower scene- I just wanted to jump into the screen and hug her. :( LOL -Liz |
I agree that it was an upsetting film at times more so than it was a horror film. I just think it's such an iconic film. The moment she has pig's blood dumped on her and seeks her revenge is brilliant. It's very rare but Sissy Spacek was nominated for an Oscar for her role in "Carrie". It's not often that you see the Academy Awards recongnize a horror/thriller movie (besides "Silence of the Lambs").
Am I making sense? I'm now finishing off my second glass of red wine. |
Just watched it!
Wasnt scary at all... and it was pretty loyal to the book. :) But it was a good movie. 7/10 - For a scary movie. because like, it wasnt scary! haha |
I don't think it was supposed to be "scary"
I think it's meant to be disturbing, and they did a very good job of it.... And yes, Femme, you make perfect sense. ;) -Liz |
Carrie will always be one of my favourite horror movies of all time. I remember the first time I saw it back as a kid. It really disturbed me, and at the same time, I enjoyed it so much. I didn't find it scary, except for the ending. That made me jump! :p

The only truly scary thing about Carrie is Piper Laurie. She's amazing. Carrie isn't as shocking post-Columbine, I think. The actual horror of school shootings and high school outcasts avenging themselves with SMGs makes it seem a little tame and a little less of a nightmare. It used to be what high school outcasts dreamt of being able to do, it's now something they can. The other main theme, the mystery and power of emerging womanhood is expressed more eloquently in Argento's Phenomena in my opinion. Carrie will always be a classic, but like a lot of classic, gets less scary as the world around us gets more scary.

Mwahahah! :D :p

Why the final scene works so well, and leaves such a sense of terror, is as follows:-
The hand doesn't shoot out of the rubble to an accompanying crash in the soundtrack and the quickfire in-your-face edits modern filmakers are so fond of. Instead it is a subtle revealation, and the ensuing "scream" by the surviving girl as she wakes from her dream is very disturbing - the kind of raw, desperate scream they perfected in the 70s and have forgotten how to do today. The musical loop that kicks in here is also very simple, but off balance and suggestive - it also goes on for about four or five times too many for comfort, adding to the clammy terror. When it suddenly stops, the credits slowly roll to a calm, peaceful soundtrack - messing with the viewer once again and leaving them shaken. |
a lot like the dream sequence at the end of deliverance ...
|
Yeah, I loved the transition from heart pounding screams to slow music. Even though the music was nice, it still came off as eery.
-Liz |
Carrie isn't the least bit scary...but it is one of my favorite movies...and the book is my favorite book.
|
I think I craped myself when I saw the hand.
