should gender matter?
just a quick question.....should the gender of the diector matter when making a horror movie? i personally think it shouldn't and that what a director brings to the table as far as ability to tell a story matters more than what gender the director is. what are your thoughts?
|
You're right it shouldn't, but I think it does.
I like my horror gory and if I know woman directed the film, I automatically assume it will have less shot of being a gory masterpiece. I have no problems with female directors in other genres but in horror, I like it bloody, and being the more sensitive sex, women don't tend to go for that as much. I'm sure I'm overlooking some, but off the top of my head I can't think of 1 aweome horror film directed by a woman. That is not a knock on women. I think it'd be cool if one of you ladies actually did make a kick ass horror movie, but so far, I don't think I've seen it. |
slumber party massacre 3 was directed by a woman i think. and the women i know have a more sick and twisted imagination than a lot of guys i know, but can they put it on screen? that's the question........

Gender shouldnt matter at all...
|
Absolutely not (unless you happen to be the director and this is some "casting couch" reference thing for a guy who wants to be in your movie- not that there's anything wrong with that).

It shouldn't matter at all. I'd be pretty cool to see a horror film written/directed by a woman...I can't think of any at the moment either...it'd be interesting for sure.

at any rate the number of male "horror" directors greatly outnumbers that of women "horror" directors. |

Well in my opinon it doesn't matter at all.
It depends on how you want the idealogy of your story preceived. If a female director makes a film in the horror genre it gets roped into the feminist movement's way of preceiving film. "The Last Girl" blahhhh blahhhh vom. Males kinda get called exploitative and seixist while Females get the gritty art label. Ummmmm two examples of this would be Maniac and Ginger Snaps. There's some pretty blunt aritcles written about these films in regard to this... look 'em up if you can be fucked. I got a friend that uses an alias to avoid such misconceptions |

Women should know their place is at home in the kitchen bringing food to the table, or darning socks while us men make real horror movies and fight in wars and drink ale. Now shut up bitch, or I'll black the other eye. |
Near Dark and American Psycho have been mentioned and I think that says it all. A women can do it just as well as a man and sometimes better and vice versa.
|
Of course, drawing distinctions such as these only serves to highlight sexual inequality.
...or does it? :p |
gender doesn't bother me (shut up Dante)

shit no!! Hell...why do you think alot of cliques are based around females.and hurricanes/storms..etc..!! We don't fuck around we have been irked or scorned..hell no!!! We would make the best directors/producers..cos we express exactly what we are feeling..which is mainly stress and so forth have it portrayed on the big screen. Why do you think they made us gods?? |
Let's not forget Rachel Talalay, folks! The wacky crazy girl of horror and sci-fi. Nice person, good director.

What a stupid question.

Aight, 90% of my friends are girls. Most of them(including my gf) laugh at the site of seeing someones arm being chopped off or something. I'd like to see more female directors making horror films.
|
Us blokes are more drawn to horror than women but there is no real difference between which gender can make better horror films. Just think how many absolutely shit horror films have been made, most of them are made by men.

Ravenous was directed by Antonia Bird
Now she's working on a 19th century serial killer piece called The Meat Trade with Robert Carlyle and Colin Firth as the killers Burke & Hare... oh and the screenplay is by Irvine Welsh. Could be good |
