Brokeback Mountain

So, the other day a woman i've been sort of dating says "i want to go see this film, but you wouldn't want to go" - I figured it would be some kind of Hillary Duff chicky flicky but, just to further the conversation I ask what film it is. She says "brokeback mountain."

Well, I say, "oh i do want to see that - the reviews have been stunning and I like Ang Lee (with the exception of the horrific hulk)." She then says, "oh, well since you're straight i figured you wouldn't want to see a gay cowboy romance."

Now, my question to the straight men of the board: Will you go see Brokeback Mountain? and, if not, is it simply because its a male-on-male romance?

she_died 12-18-2005 11:01 AM

Yes I'll go, but only wearing sunglasses with pictures of breasts glued to the inside of the lenses...

For real though, yes, I'd like to see it, but I'm broke. Although seeing men kiss/have sex isn't my favourite thing in the world to watch, it's just another thing that goes on in the wide, wonderful world, and if someone's making a good movie that includes such things, who am I to resist? Plus, it's always interesting to see the view from the other side of the fence, if you will. Being gay is inherently a lot more challenging than being straight, there are bound to be a bunch of good stories in that...

RavageRitual 12-18-2005 11:19 AM

Im pretty sure im gonna go check it out.

pinkfloyd45769 12-18-2005 11:21 AM

I'm not a guy, i still want to see it though. I think the actors are great in this, it would be tuff if they are not gay in real life to do these scenes.

Zero 12-18-2005 11:21 AM

i have this overwhelming urge to make a joke out of "check it out" - - but in the name of tolerance and my opposition to homophobia - i'll resist

Good Idea;)

Zero 12-18-2005 11:28 AM

every once in a while i give in to my "good" side

(of course, i give in to my evil side on a daily basis)

Marroe 12-18-2005 11:35 AM

"sort of dating"? hmm....:p

Anyways. I'm not a guy (for those of you that didn't know), but I'd have no problems seeing a movie with girl on girl, guy on guy, whatever...as long as it seems like a good movie. And if I wanted a guy to go see a movie like that with me I'd hope he wouldn't have a problem with it. Insecurity to the max, I couldn't deal with it.

its a tough moment - when do you 'officially' start dating? how many 'dates' make you 'dating?' - i don't know and i'm not sure i want to push things to find out. . .

advice?

Well...how long have you known her? I would say after 3 consecutive dates you're 'dating' at least. As far as relationships after dating, I wouldn't know...I've never been on an actual 'date'. But if she seems interested and you are too, ask her to be your girl :) You don't wanna wait TOO long, she'll think you don't like her.

Zero 12-18-2005 11:48 AM

hmm, wow '3' seems so . . . quick. . i guess i'll have to start thinking about this more seriously

quick for a relationship! Of course. But dating...I'd say if you like one person enough to go on more than 3 dates with you're dating them. But like I said...I've never been on a date so what do I know?

no - no - no - i totally trust your advice. i have had many horrifically awkward 'dating' situations based on my general inability to pick up on the proper 'rules' or 'etiquette' of these things. . . so i think you are probably right

stubbornforgey 12-18-2005 12:10 PM

em not a guy either but i would definately go and see this just out of curiosity..
Did anyone see the 1st jesus xrist movie they made??
In some parts there it depicted him as being homosexual..
Also ..one unwarranted fact..
in the original Romeo and Juliet..
Juliet was played by a male becos females were not allowed in public theaters.

haha, no I'm serious, I shouldn't be trying to give dating advice...realtionships MAYBE, I have had a decently long thing, but of course that ended:rolleyes: But I know now. Not saying I'm not for the dating because I've never done it, just no ones ever taken the time. Maybe one day:p Anyways...good luck with it.

MisterSadistro 12-18-2005 03:09 PM

I'll eventually see it when it's on cable since I have no desire to see it at the theater or renting it. I have no problem with it being gay. Hell, we all go to zombie movies but aren't zombies- well most of us anyway LOL. I have more of a problem with it being a western without Clint Eastwood (esp since I'm in pre-production on a 'Sin City' like western that will film next Sept).

ItsAlive75 12-18-2005 04:10 PM

I'm not gonna see it, but purely on the grounds that it just looks boring.

yeah - if it was Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron as lonesome cowgirls out on the plains who get a little, uhm, affectionate - well newb would be camped out for tickets!

Despare 12-19-2005 07:52 AM

I like to poke fun at movies and I have a feeling I'd offend a lot of people if I went to see this. Now, I don't mind offending people, but if I can prevent I always try heh. I remember the first time seeing the preview me and my friend were making jokes through the beginning of it only to find out that it WAS a gay cowboy movie, quite a good laugh.

Zero 12-19-2005 08:02 AM

the joke was on you - - lol

The gay cowboy stereotype has been around for a while. It's about time someone made a movie about it!

Don't let it be said that newb doesn't have a sensitive side.

she_died 12-19-2005 08:08 AM

If Star Trek embraced the gay audience, they might actually have a shot at keeping the franchise alive. Maybe a show about the adventures of two gay klingons or something

Zero 12-19-2005 08:08 AM

pathetic

*shakes head in disgust and slowly walks away*

scouse mac 12-19-2005 08:11 AM

A film about a relationship between gay cowboys? How fucking boring can you get? I work long hours for my money and i would not be wasting it on this (however i can see how it could be a good dating film).

she_died 12-19-2005 08:18 AM

don't worry stubborn, i'm a trek nerd from way back. now that you know takei is gay, you have to go back and watch that episode where he goes nuts and prances around the ship shirtless with a rapier. great stuff.
