1970's Imitation Bacon Strips
Okay, okay, okay....someone old here has to have seen or had these things at some point...does anyone remember in the late 70's or very early 80's, these dough-like strips of gelatinous stuff (was it soy based maybe? not sure) that were basically a vegetarian bacon substitute? I believe it came frozen and looked something like strips of rubbery bacon, but it was artificial, it came out of a machine, sliced, and kind of oily...well, REALLY oily...
And you would fry this stuff up, just like bacon. It would get crispy and crunchy and kind of golden brown. It looked like it was made of plastic or something, and it tasted kind of like bacon and kind of not. I can't remember the goddamn name of the stuff! Ooo you gatta help me. I'm not talking about "Sizzlean"--that was actually a reduced-fat bacon. No, these were totally vegetarian, but just as oily as real bacon. I imagine it was mainly created to sell to the veggie-conscious crowd. |
I thought you were talking about a 1970's movie called "Imitation" where Kevin Bacon gets naked.

He cracks a fuckin gross stiffy in Friday The 13th

Thanks for the help, but you see, I don't really want to eat the imitation bacon--I'm really trying to remember the freakin' NAME of the product that used to exist, and it's just been driving me bananas! Fake bacon? Fakon? Bacnot? I Can't Believe It's Not Bacon? WTF was this 70's crap called?

Ah man. I think that just ruined my appetite for bacon this morning....:(

Well, Bac-O's are imitation bacon bits, and they're still available...these were actual strips. You got them frozen, I think, and then you were supposed to store them in the fridge...they were quite flexible, kind of like bacon, and completely flat slices, like bacon. Like bacon, it also had a white part and a reddish part--but this was manufactured into it, and it looked like something a machine had created. The red and white parts had this unnaturally regular design.
So you would take these rubbery things and fry them up. Just like bacon, they would exude a lot of oil and shrivel up and turn golden brown and crispy. One notable difference between this stuff and real bacon was that when you cooked it, it became crispy through and through, no matter how done it was--you couldn't get different levels of flexibility like you can with real bacon. So every slice turned out crispy, no matter how much you had browned it. Believe it or not, it actually tasted pretty good! It was salty and oily and had a little bit of smoke flavoring added. And if you don't feel like eating now, well, I am sorry! |
Hmm, I have no idea. I'll do some searching for you to see if I can find out.

And the first image was this helicopter shot, approaching a beautiful beach, and you heard Ricardo's voice say "MEEEEEEEEEEXXXXXX-iCO." And it was the scariest, most sinister sounding thing ever recorded. Like he was trying to make it creepy for some reason. I was going to cosmetology school at the time, learning makeup artistry and so on, and all the cute girls were giggling about this for weeks in the back room. "MEEEEEEEEEXXXXX-ICO," they would say, wearing a creepy Boris Karloff kind of expression. |

Huttons Ima' Bacon Strips' no biggie...just that. but see ..in the 70's they lied alot.. they never told us then that smoking causes cancer.. or that grass n pots were to be smoked n not cooked in or mowed.. and wide flarey pants and afro's were kewl and hip.. so em guessing they lied about the bacon too.. |
