Masters of Horror
I don't see much on here about it, who's excited!? Romero's out (bummer) but Argent, Gordon, Takishi Mike, John Carpenter! So many great directors doing these one hour films. I know I'll be watching Showtime the 28th at 10PM. What do you people think?
|
I don't get Showtime, but I did strongly consider ordering it so I could watch this show. Then the cable company told me it would be an extra $20 every month, and I thought better of it. I'll definitely be picking up the DVDs when they get released though.
|
Yeah I think February is the release date. The only one I'm not interested in is Homecoming from Joe Dante. Anyway, check out the titles and directors. http://www.sho.com/site/mastersofhorror/movies.do

Im in the same boat as Noct, cant wait for the DVDs though! Really looking forawrd to Argento's for some reason.
|
I want to see Stuart Gordon's because it's another H.P. Lovecraft story, I just find that very cool for some reason. If nothing else Gordon will get the best director of Lovercraft's work award.

   It is?? I hadnt heared he was even involved! DEFINATLY looking forward to that!! |
Yep, Dagon, Re-Animator, and now Dreams in the Witch House. The first was last Sat. and pretty good but Stuart's is next!!
|
Utterly impressive. To say the least.
I just saw the first episode last night. Phantasm is the only introduction I've had to Don Coscarelli's work. And that was a lifetime ago. Recognized Angus Scrimm in a brilliant, upbeat (!) talky role. Still cannot believe this is -just- for television. It might as well be a movie; sure couldn't tell the difference! I want more. |
I did not like the Don Coscarelli one at all. So corny and such a waste of Angus Scrimm.
I'm still going to watch every episode, you know it! |
Why a waste?
He was brilliant. |

looks great
|
far from his frightening role as the tall man, his role in the episode is still creepy. it's good to have him play a different type of role that isn't always tied down to the serious-faced-and-scary type.
|
Well, anybody see the last one? Great story and so weird... that rat with the human face was interesting. Anyway, I liked this weeks better than last weeks and now I can't wait for tonights! Tobe Hooper's pretty good... Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist being his two biggest.
|
I had no idea Tobe Hooper did Poltergeist. Ha! Where have I been?
Upon further investigation on imdb, I see that he did the original Salem's Lot too. Again, WHERE HAVE I BEEN? |
GREAT... I missed Tobe's. How was it? Worth tracking down a friends' VHS?
|
I love that show. Since it 1st aired, I've seen every episode.
|
"Chocolate" breathed some fresh air back into the series,
after Jenifer... So far, here's my own ranking of the episodes: 1. Tobe Hooper's Dance of the Dead 2. Don Coscarelli's Incident On & Off a Mountain Road 3. Stuart Gordon's Dreams in the Witch House 4. Mick Garris' Chocolate 5. Dario Argento's Jenifer How about yours? |
Quote:
4 Jenifer 3 Dreams in the Witch House 4 Dance of the Dead and 1 Incident On & Off a Mountain Road |
I have yet to see Chocolate and Jenifer... but one or both of them are on tape. Dew, I don't understand your rankings.

Thanks, you two. You got a good laugh out of me. I really needed that bit of cheering up today.
Anyway, here's my list again with episode #6. 1. Joe Dante's Homecoming 2. Tobe Hooper's Dance of the Dead 3. Don Coscarelli's Incident On & Off a Mountain Road 4. Stuart Gordon's Dreams in the Witch House 5. Mick Garris' Chocolate 6. Dario Argento's Jenifer |

I'm glad I could help ya in a laugh. Anyway, I thought Homecoming was the worst, cuz I laughed all the way through it. When I watch masters of horror, I want to jump or gasp, make a disgusted face, or say " eww sick" or something & not laugh my ass off cuz of ppl coming back from the dead to vote for president. If this series was a comedy, I'd give that episode the #1 spot. But I put it at the # 6 spot. |
I can honestly say after seeing a few of these that this is a GREAT series and I can't wait for the boxset in Feb. or the next season. Wonder who they'll get... Oh, and hope I didn't offend you Dew, I get pissy sometimes.

I get amused. And you amused me. LOL now, that I know ya get pissy at times, I hope I didn't just offend you. |
Just saw Joe Dante's Homecoming last Friday and i didnt like it at all, alot of people say its really good but it just wasnt that great for me, I didnt like how thier wasnt any real action other than the opening and ending scene, all the rest was either jibba-jabbin, or making zombies happy by lettin em vote. Just my opinion.

Anyway, way too political for my tastes this week, I probably won't watch it again. |
Ok last night, saw "Deer Woman" I thought it was just only slightly better than "homecoming" Didn't make me laugh like " homecoming" did, so I guess that's something.
|
While it may not be horror in every sense of the word, I think Joe Dante's Homecoming was brilliant. I don't like to watch political films or tv series, but this is different. Not because zombies are putting in their votes for president, but for the episode's jab at politics and all their little games. One can hardly fake surprise if it were true.
I have yet to see Deer Woman. SideNote: A fellow cinephile once made mention of the fact that of all the episodes, Mick Garris' is the only one that "looks" like a made-for-television production. After giving it some thought, it is quite noticeable how the "film" directors have the skill and creativity to break out of the tv-production budget and shoot a tv episode that's bigger than life. In the back of my mind, while watching Chocolate, I couldn't help but think it reminds me of Twilight Zone, not thematically of course...but visually. Have any of you noticed in any of the episodes? |
Watched John Landis' Deerwoman last night. Its blatant and intrusive soundtrack really hits you, which I think is one of the episode's major flaws. The adequate acting and an amusing scipt creates a strange unreal atmosphere for me. Though I didn't like the anti-nature theme, it was good to see it end the way it did.
An intriguing introduction to the director, was starkly reminiscent of several X-files episodes. Onward to the list... my MASTERS OF HORROR Ranking List 1. Joe Dante's Homecoming 2. Tobe Hooper's Dance of the Dead 3. Don Coscarelli's Incident On & Off a Mountain Road 4. Stuart Gordon's Dreams in the Witch House 5. Mick Garris' Chocolate 6. John Landis' Deerwoman 7. Dario Argento's Jenifer |
my list
1Dario Argento's Jenifer 2Don Coscarelli's Incident On & Off a Mountain Road 3Joe Dante's Homecoming (very powerful) 4Tobe Hooper's Dance of the Dead (great as SF) 5Stuart Gordon's Dreams in the Witch House 6John Landis' Deerwoman Mick Garris' Chocolate still to see  |

i just watched 08 - Cigarette Burns - John Carpenter
the best so far :D but i still need to see Chocolate ... no time :( well i think that 10 - Pick me Up! - Larry Cohen shall be good  looking forward to see it  |
The two I have enjoyed watching most so far are: Dreams in the Witch House. Lovecraft, what can I say that hasn't already been said. He is brilliant and the episode did convey alot of the horror of the story. Dance of the Dead, I might just be biased here. I love Richard Matheson.
I'm looking forward to seeing Sick Girl. I recently saw the last venture comprised of the director Lucky McKee and actress Angela Bettis, May, it was strange but just twisted enough to work. |
Do you know of any other director who brings Lovecraft to cellulose? Besides Carpenter...
Having seen Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator and From Beyond, it's evident how skillful he is in bringing the stories to life, masterfully blending together the horror elements with the supernatural/fantasy. The "thing" in From Beyond was very reminiscent of John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness. --- Just saw Cigarette Burns last night. It was a very shocking, gripping, and beautifully executed episode that literally burst out of its made-for-tv boundaries. Damn, damn, damn. This is just the kind of thing that makes me wonder why on earth hasn't he made any films in all these years?! Onward to the list... my MASTERS OF HORROR Ranking List 1. John Carpenter's Cigarette Burns 2. Joe Dante's Homecoming 3. Tobe Hooper's Dance of the Dead 4. Don Coscarelli's Incident On & Off a Mountain Road 5. Stuart Gordon's Dreams in the Witch House 6. Mick Garris' Chocolate 7. John Landis' Deerwoman 8. Dario Argento's Jenifer |
Just saw Deer Woman and I really didn't care for it. It seemed too made for tv for me and some of the acting was simply horrible. I liked the story a bit and the reference to American Werewolf was funny but this one didn't really do it for me. Still have a few to see...
|
Cigarette burns is at the top of my list now, under witch house.
Anyway on a semi related note: Ever since I saw Deer Woman, I've been trying to think of what else I've seen that guy in. (The white cop or whatever) I'm thinking it was on an HBO show, before tales from the Crypt came on. Anyone know? |
Yeah he was on Dream On, pretty funny show.
