When I was 9, my friend Brian and I were ice skating down at the frozen pond at the bottom of the hill. We were having a great time, racing each other from one side to the other and laughing like children do. All of a sudden, Brian hit a patch of thin ice and he went under. I rushed over and tried to pull him out, but he was nowhere to be found. After a few minutes, he surfaced and I dragged him to the snowbank on the side of the pond. His skin was blue and he wouldn't respond to anything I said to him. I'll never forget the words I said as I held his cold, lifeless body in my arms...
