War of the Worlds (2005)

Well, you heard it. Steven Spielberg is planning on re-making War of the Worlds, with Tom Cruise as the leading character. The article can be found:

HERE

I've only read a shortened, kid-friendly, illustrated version of the book and listened to the radio play, but I liked them both.

This story could be very cool done with today's effects, especially with Spielberg directing. I do hope that it's set in the same time period as the book...

Lirael 12-04-2004 05:03 PM

Yep it is being filmed right now in Ct. We'll see if they can do it justice.

Demonic Faces 12-04-2004 05:09 PM

right on

phantomstranger 12-06-2004 01:20 PM

The original is playing on cable right now..,and it truly is a classic, I think Speilberg will do it justice But I"m not a Cruise fan. But I'll reserve judgement untill I see some footage from it.

urgeok 12-07-2004 02:01 AM

this is a big fucking mistake.
I was asked a while ago what would be the best choice for a film to be remade and i said War of the Worlds because the previous version was an americanized piece of crap by George Pal that was basically a religious film. They used to play the godamn thing every Thanksgiving.

I always wanted to see it done properly .. turn of (the previous) century england.
But no .. once again it's hijacked and will become another Independance Day only with Tom fricking Cruise.

Speilberg is a fine director but this is a big mistake.

Maybe some day someone will do it properly.
Too bad Jackson didnt pick it up .. I bet he'd do it justice.

Book was good, I'm looking forward to it.

Independance Day was just a modern version of War of the Worlds . so whats the big difference here ?

newb 12-22-2004 08:23 AM

what can i say ? i'm pissed.

I try to keep from bashing hollywood because all they do is pump out films to a formula that works : give the people what they want.

In general americans dont want to see movies about any other country - especially England because they cant deal with the accents. Well, that and they are self-obsessed.

So a true-to-the-book interpretation probably wouldnt fly.
Which is sad.
The one thing about the Horror members here is that they have a much more open mind and do not reflect the american movie going majority.

So the only thing i can hope for is some BBC miniseries ... which wont have a budget so although it will be well acted the effects will end up looking like amateur shit. and i'll still be unsatisfied.

newb 12-23-2004 09:07 AM

I happen to to be fond of quite a few British movies, as well as TV shows. But I do live in New England.....maybe that has something to do with it.

Now as for the damn Canadians......except for Rush and Michael J. Fox, what have they given us.

Celion or however the fuck you spell it....

YOU KNOW WHAT I SAY...BLAME CANADA.

Times have changed,
Our kids are getting worse
They won't obey their parents,
They just want to fart and curse. Should we blame the government, or blame society, or should we blame the images on tv No!
Blame Canada! Blame Canada

With all their beady little eyes,
their flapping heads so full of lies
Blame Canada!
Blame Canada!
We need to form a full assault, it's Canada's fault! Don't blame me, for my son Stan, He saw the darn cartoon, and now he's off to
join the klan!> And my boy eric once, had my picture on his shelf, but now when I see him, he tells me to fuck myself>

Well, Blame Canada!

It seems that everything's gone wrong since
Canada came along
Blame Canada!
Blame Canada! They're not even a real country anyway. My son could of been a doctor or a lawyer, it's a true, Instead he burned up like a piggie on a barbecue> Should we blame the matches? Should we blame the fire, or the doctor who allowed him to expire. Heck no!
Blame Canada!
Blame Canada!
With all their hockey hubaloo and that bitch Anne Murray too. Blame Canada!
Shame on Canada!

The smut we must stop
The trash we must smash
Laughter and fun
must all be undone
We must blame them and cause a fuss
Before somebody thinks of blaming us!

ItsAlive75 05-20-2005 10:07 PM

I love fresh bread.

War of the Worlds

Well today was extremely shitty. My date blew me off and i felt like i had the flu all day because i didnt sleep but 4 or 5 hours last night.

But at least one thing worked out, i went and saw War of the Worlds and i have to say its one of the best movies ive seen this year (But then again i havent seen Land of the Dead yet)

One lesson ive learned...never...underestimate Tom Cruise. I thought Collateral was going to suck, bad ass movie...i thought Last Samurai was going to be the worst movie, acceptably good. And this one probably blows all of them all of the water, which is cool because i went into the theatre thinking Signs by M Night Shamylan. Totally wrong

ItsAlive75 07-03-2005 04:22 PM

This movie made me want to punch Dakota Fanning right in the face. Her entire role seemes to be non-stop crying and screaming... kinda like Hide and Seek.

I'm really starting to distaste that girl.

I admit that. I think her role was the only major flaw in that movie. Other than that i would have to recommend it to anybody that likes alien movies.

MichaelMyers 07-03-2005 09:22 PM

He should have just converted all the aliens to Scientology.

Elvis_Christ 07-03-2005 11:15 PM

^^ :D

novadawn969 07-03-2005 11:45 PM

this movie was quite exeptional. or at least the parts I saw. Afterwards I had a headache. miss fanning has some lungs on her. I thought the screaming would stop at one part, but the little bitch lived. how rude.

Angra 07-04-2005 06:45 AM

Hey hate dude.

I´m just curious. What did you do last night since you got so little sleep?

urgeok 07-04-2005 06:50 AM

i have no desire to see this movie ..

stupid modern day USA, stupid Tom Cruise.

when is this film going to be made the way it should have been ?? ..
faithful to the book !!!!

Marroe 07-04-2005 09:16 AM

I haven't read the book, but this movie is pretty good. I grinded my teeth away watching it.

Haunted 07-04-2005 11:37 AM

I read the book. I saw the movie. I loved the book. I hated the movie.:D

filmmaker2 07-04-2005 12:29 PM

I am actually anxious to see this, have heard good comments from people (for the most part). I will probably check it out Wednesdayish.

Tat2 07-04-2005 10:23 PM

I read the book, I've seen the original movie countless times, saw the movie based on the radio play ("The night America paniced" or something like that) and saw the remake. I liked them all.

Chainsaw Guy 07-05-2005 07:15 AM

I thought it was kick ass it had the Tom Cruise moment with the Grenades The sound was amazing Dakota Fanning was Fucking annoying

tachii 07-05-2005 08:55 AM

hated it! what the fuck happened to the plot; it's there lightly but hardly. it was no different that any other film which relies on special effects to carry the story.

i was very dissapointed i actually thinking that this film was going to be worth my time but then again i was the one stupid enough to pay to see it and made everyone a few dollars richer. luckally i went to a matenne so they didn't steal to much

yes, fanning was extremly annoying! one would assume that a child as gifted as her would have been given a more plausable role.

Gren the cake 07-05-2005 02:01 PM

i originally wanted to watch it cuz it was about the book, although i figured that as usual, hollywood would completely butcher it

that and tom cruise has turned into one hell of a dousche as of late, so im planning on boycotting him.

I agree with Haunted - I was avoiding WOTW because I hate Tom Cruise and have realized that S.S. just makes the same movie over and over and over again - subsituting aliens for sharks for nazis for dinosaurs . . .

What killed me about WOTW was how insanely narcissistic it was - why, for instance, do aliens seem to seek Tom Cruise out - I mean wherever he goes they show up. In the 50s film it makes sense as he's a reporter and the whole military connection. But Tom Cruise is just "everyman" - so why do aliens suddenly appear . . . everytime he is near???

Also, I was repulsed by the fairly explicit 9/11 imagery - I know its an "end of the world" film - but I thought it was downright exploitation.

Finally, in another of my extended rants, did it bother anyone else that the protagonist was an utterly vicious selfish bastard who cared nothing about anyone except his family - pushing shoving, shooting -even killing- everyone who got in his way. Indeed, the whole film seemed to suggest that the only way to survive is to kick and stomp everyone else and get whatever you can. That kind of selfish individualism is certainly at the center of current American political/cultural philosophy - its just sad to see it celebrated on the big screen.

Haunted 07-06-2005 09:02 AM

Besides that, he's a Scientologist. Now, I'm Wiccan, and we get shit from people, so technically I shouldn't give it out. However, has anyone here researched Scientology? If there's such a thing as a cult, these jokers are it.

filmmaker2 07-06-2005 05:03 PM

Okay, I saw the damn thing, and I give it a 5, mostly because it looked good. I didn't mind that it didn't make a lick of sense; I did mind that there seemed virtually no point to it.

X¤MurderDoll¤X 07-06-2005 05:05 PM

I'm trying to hate Tom Cruise, didn't plan on seeing the movie anyway.
