Romper Stomper
What are your guys opinons on this film. I fucking love it and would rate it in my top movies of all time. I just re-watched it and its still as good as I remember it. Easily the best thing Russell Crowe has ever done (and probably ever will do) and it beats the shit out of American History X. Totally intense film experience.

Strangely enough, I've never seen it...I heard it was pretty raw though.
|
I have never even heard of this that I recall, I will add it to the ever expanding Netflix queue....lol.
I thought The Believer with Ryan Gosling was an interesting film, had a little bit of a different spin. |

I really dig Tim Roth I night have to check it out. Wasn't it directed by the guy who made Scum?

I should rent this, was planning on it but i dont know.

You should its pretty cheap to buy on DVD over here and is well worth your money.
Definatley will have to try and track down Made In Britian. I loved the film Scum... someone brought a real nice VHS copy of that from under my nose the other day aswell I was gutted :( I haven't seen a good Australian film like this for awhile. There was a really good run of them for awhile during the late 80s & 90s and some of them rank among my top pics. Bad Boy Bubby Ghosts.... of the civil dead (I really like Nick Cave's part in this) Metal Skin Chopper |
I thought it was great but I disagree with the statement best thing Crowe has/will ever do.
A Beautiful Mind The Insider L.A. Confidential Gladiator Cinderella Man all better in my opinion, not to take anything away from Romper Stomper which I've already mentioned was great. |

I thought all those movie were terrible. But each to their own. I prefer dirty, gritty cinema as apposed to the slick Hollywood style. Cinderella Man does look promising tho. |
Quote:
Gladiator I do enjoy and L.A Confidential is outstanding, in my opinion. The acting in that movie is just fantastic all around. And I think it is Crowe's best (of what I have seen so far). |
bah. I thought Romper Stomper sucked. Crowe was damn good in it, but it just DRAGGED. The first fight scene looked promising, but it went nowhere. I'll give it a second look just to be sure, but I just couldn't get into this, I thought it was really boring.
1/5 |

I just prefer a good movie and I thought all the ones I listed were great. Russell Crowe is one of the best actors there is imo, I know most people don't really care about what critics say or awards but come on movie after movie the guy gets great reviews and numerous nominations, even if you don't respect critics and awards much after awhile you have to stop and think to yourself ''maybe this guy knows what he's doing''. To add to that most of the people I know(who do know their movies)like the work he does. ''To each his own'' |

I thought it was great didn't bore me for a second, I never read anything about John Nash before I saw the film so I didn't know he was off his block so to speak, so I guess instead of just watching a biopic about a mathmatician it was sort of like watching any other film with a twist that I enjoyed. Who knows, maybe if I had read about him before watching the film it might've bored the hell outta me, but I'm glad it didn't. |
I think his preformances have gone downhill after Romper Stomper.... he just became bubblegum and cheesy doing horrible sentimental movies with Ritchie Cunningham.
|
Quote:
I don't have a problem with sentimental movie or Ron Howard. Who cares if he was on Happy Days as Ritchie Cunningham does that mean he can't make a good movie? What about Rob Reiner he was Micheal on All in the Family and he's done This is Spinal Tap,Misery and a few other really good films. |
Quote:
And what do you find bubblegum about his preformance in L.A. Confidential? |
Quote:
i think he's proficient at making movies but his films arent for me. |
Quote:
i wasnt bored but i take any 'real person' movie with a grain of salt. There is so much poetic license taken to make it cinematically appealing that i automatically dont believe anything on screen |
I think he is a great actor who is WAY to fucking full of himself. When you become your own #1 fan, it''s time to get taken down a peg. Especially when you throw a fucking phone at someone....
That being said, Gladiator and LA COnfidential are two of my favorite movies. And who doesnt LOVE Virtuosity? cmon... Crowe AND Denzel Washington. plus a cameo by Traci Lords. That movie had everything. Plus, Have William Fitchner, William Forsythe and Kelly Lynch ever been in any bad movies? Cmon...... |

i have no problem with crowes acting - he gives a solid performance no matter what .. i'm sick of hearing his name in the papers though ... fucking tool lost an oscar because of his bullshit - he keeps it up and he'll start losing work .. no one needs that shit. |
Quote:
Now, I am a bit tired of Crowe's off screen antics myself. But there is no denying the fact that he is one of the best actors working today. |
I could careless about what he does off camera maybe he is full of himself but we don't know the guy personally so we'll never know. I personally don't think he's that bad of a guy from what I've seen, I saw his ''Inside the Actor's Studio'' and he came off as a cool guy, when they got to the ''what word do you hate'' question he said and I quote ''it's a three word phrase, hollywood bad boy''.
I think urge has said this before about the media building up people only so they can take a big name that'll sell more papers and get more ratings when they break 'em down. Now obviously he's got an attitude problem or he wouldn't be throwning phones at people, pending on the performances we're yet to see this year I think he may have screwed himself out of a Cinderella Man oscar but hey everybody's got problems. But anyway with all the celebrity crap aside I'm a movie fan and he's a great actor so I like him and every movie he's been in that I've seen so far. |
Quote:
That's understandable ''To each his own'' but I'm sure you'll agree that the backgrounds of actors and filmmakers have nothing to do with the work they do now, I know his films aren't for everybody nobody's films are for everybody but almost everytime a discussion including Ron Howard pops up here the fact that he was Ritchie Cunningham is brought up like it's actually relivant to what he does now. |

He just seemed cheesy to me in LA Confidential. His accent soundxed fucking awful too. But as I said I'm gonna have to check it out again.
|
Quote:
while you and I(among others)may not care about what he does in his personal life there are alot of people who do so you can't blame the news for covering the story, you have to blame society for indulging in the bullshit. you mention that the cynic in you believes he knows exactly what he's doing but you've got to realize that he may have threw his oscar right along with that phone. Yeah he got some press and a few headlines and will he still be nominated? yeah probably so but he may have very well screwed himself out of his thus far deserved oscar which would do alot more for him in the long run than a few headlines. |
i thoink the bottom line is that they - like us - are people ..
some (many) are giant assholes. he's good at his job, but he's lousy at being a human being .. just like a lot of people i've met in real life .. |
Quote:

I hate all the celebrity gossip bullshit. I personally don't need to know this sort of thing. People are such vultures. No wonder he has an attitude towards the public and press wouldn't you if you were hounded like that? I know I wouldn't hesitate to get all Sean Penn on some of those motherfuckers if I was in the same situation.
|

And I also know that celebrities have to stay in the spotlight and a lot of people are fascinated by bad boy antics. Yes, I agree that in the long run the Oscar would do more for his career, but I also know that it is just so darn convenient that he has a big movie out and suddenly he is in the news.......again. Funny how that works.:D But if that is the way it is, more power to him. If he is just an ass, that's fine too. If he is really a decent human being that gets pushed a little too hard at times, that's great. I will enjoy his performances without worrying about it, because it doesn't impact my life in one way or another. |
I havent seen Cinderella Man but I heard its good (from a girl so I'll wait to reserve judgement on that.) I thought Beautiful Mind and The Insider were both incredibly slow moving and over-rated. LA Confidential wasn't bad, but there are much cool cop movies out there. Gladiator was a pretty sweet movie. The fight scene with the tigers was really well done! Romper Stomper was pretty badass too.
Romper Stomper and Gladiator are his 2 best movies, IMO. (On a semi-related-neo-nazi-movie note, American History X is also awesome! Way better than anything Russell Crowe has done! Ed Norton's the man!) |
