MKoments that took you by surprise
What parts in movies or tv shows (or books, whatever) hit you like a ton of bricks? BAsically, you never saw it coming and it just knocks you on your ass.(warning, MANY possible spoilers here)
Here are a few for me: American History X: Danny is in the bathroom and the black kid he pissed off comes in behind him and points a gun at him. Then the little fucker shoots him 3 times point blank in the chest.... I get cold and numb every time i see that... And he has a look of shock on his face, like he didnt actually expect to kill him. The end of "The Usual Suspects".. the first time i saw it, when Verbal is Limping.. then starts to wwalk and streches out his hand i literally said "Holy shit!" outloud in the theater... The same with the end of Se7en. "Oh C'mon! Whats in the fucking box?!" "I just told you...." Godamn.. that still gives me chills. |
Cool Question
Cool Question - I'd say three:
1) Old-school: I remember nearly shitting myself at the end of Friday the 13th (the first one) when the deformed kid lunges up out of the water. (indeed, I may have let a little slip out!!!!) 2) New-school (sort of): The Crying Game. Everyone I knew had seen the movie when they took me and I could feel them all watching me (and I was desperately trying to figure out what the twist was) - needless to say I didn't think it would be, uh, sticking right out at me!! 3) Literary: I still get goose bumps at the end of Stephen King's The Stand when the blue electric ball turns into the hand of God and blows them all up. miracle mile ..
started out as a light romantic comedy and radically changed gears 1/2 way through. fantastic film.. |
Million Dollar Baby
If you've seen it you know what I'm talking about, If you haven't you'll know when/if you see it. don't want to give anything away. |
The Last Samaurai: Who would have known..a movie where Tom Cruise plays a warrior in Japan was good

Oh god....The Forgotten. Wasnt the greatest movie, but it sure had some surprises....the car crash espicially. After that, I was expecting more like it, but it was the 1st, and....wow
The "ice cream man" scene in the original Assault on Precinct 13. I figured the man would get killed...but the kid! Totally out of nowhere! Another small surprise in that movie...I was pretty surprised that Napolean survived. I figured he'd get shot, and his dying words would explain his name [Come on, I know Im not the only one that thought that] The ending of Mad City....I know alot of you havnt seen it, so I wont say what. But for those who know...It makes you completly forget about ****, then wham! What an ending! The Life of David Gale had one hell of a shocker at the end. Well, shocker, then another, ever better shocker right on top of it. Wasnt a great movie, but a great ending. And last but not least...Ghostbusters. Who would have thougt the Stay Puft marshmellow man could do so much damge?!:D |
most people say the point where Samuel JAckson was eaten by the shark in Deep Blue - so early in the film ..
|
The ending of the films Primal Fear and Basic. I did not see either of those coming. In fact with Primal Fear I was watching it with my friend and we both looked at each other and said what did he say and had to rewind it to make sure we heard it correct. In Hannibal when Lector is eating the brains of Ray Liotta, I almost puked because I did not see that one coming.

Se7en: The ending
Wicker Man: The Ending Fight Club: From when Marla calls him "Tyler" until he passes out Memento: Tons of stuff, including the ending |
The end of American History X took me by surprise also. Actually it took me by surprise a bit when it flashed back on Derek's crime also.
And yes, I was also taken aback by The Usual Suspects. I had read Primal Fear so I knew the twist there. And Suspiria surprised the hell out of me.....I was not expecting what happened in the first few minutes of that film. I knew nothing about that movie before I watched it the first time. |
plot-wise, I was very underwhelmed by Suspiria. The witch angle was really boring. It could've been a great surrealist horror movie if they'd just gone balls-out weird (don't give me that "The Beyond" crap, either, that movie sucked). Fantastic direction, though
EDIT: And I disagree with the studio, that movie would've been at least twice as good if they'd let Argento make the movie with 12 year olds |
1.Vincent Vega dying in pulp fiction.
2.TCM 3.the death of nancey in NOES 3 4.Se7en ending 5.Empire strikes back |

I don't like The Beyond either; I thought I was the only horror fan that didn't.:p |

there is nothing about The Beyond for me and i'm a pretty broad minded horror fan. (i even bought the limited edition tin of the damn thing) Suspira is another one i share feelings about with STE. I can appreciate the great music and filmwork .. but the witch thing lost me. extremely not scary - and horrible makeup. |
If I can step outside film - the one that still sticks with me is the ending of the graphic novel Watchmen - well the BIG ENDING. I won't give it away (although I'd recommend it to everyone) especially as a film of Watchmen is on its way. But, it made me want to run around the neighborhood screaming "HOW COOL IS THIS - HOLY SHIT!!!!!!"

Suspiria was a monumental dissappointment to me, i hated it.
However, the girl falling into the room filled with razor wire was a very noteworthy "Holy fuck" moment. Another moment that hits me like a slap in the face every time is in American History X when the skinheads in jail teach Vinyard a "lesson"..... Even Shawshank redemption had easier to watch anal rape scenes.... The end of "Christmas Evil" (aka, "You Better Watch Out"). I was laughing hysterically... I could not beleive they would actually end a movie that way. (Guy thinks he is santa, kills four people, then drives his van off a bridge, and FLIES OFF INTO THE SKY LIKE SANTA!!!) |
