Horror's Guilty Pleasures?
 

As a fan of horror I have certain movies that I love, the critics hate. Most of us who are life-long fans can find that little gem in the films casual horror watchers dismiss as junk. What are some of your horror movie guilty pleasures? Some of mine are, "Devil Dog: Hound From Hell", where Richard Crenna's family gets more than they bargained for when a cute little pup moves in. "The Hearse", with Trish VanDevere and ,"The Hand", starring Michael Caine. Any critic's least favorites on your must-see lists?

I don't get it how a lot of critics didn't like the Phantasm series.
One director I really dig that has suffered at the hands of critics is Frank Henenlotter (Basket Case trilogy, Brain Damage and Frankenhooker). Henenlotter and Coscarelli both make highly original offbeat movies that I guess you either work or don't work for you.

I've really enjoyed the later John Carpenter films also..... which a lot of people hate with a venegeance they still have a certain spark to them and I always like his characters. People don't seem to get that Escape From L.A was meant to be bad.

Strange Days was a movie I watched recently that got a lot of undeserved shit from critics..... I thought it was great.

Fuck critics anyway they don't know shit a lot of the time.... I've stopped listening to them because they don't get the genre and shit on it out of ignorance.

I still like "House of the Dead" dammit!!! Nobody else does, but I do, and THAT.......is all that matters......haha :cool: :D

How the fuck can anybody like House of the Dead?

That was horrendous! Easily the worst mainstream, big budget horror movie I've ever seen.






P.S. The critics were right for bashing Phantasm. That series sucks.

It seems that the critics hate one of my guilty pleasures, Jason X! Something about this one just clicked for me. Probably all the deaths, or maybe Kane Hodder's performance. Whatever it is, I love Jason X.

P.S. It wasn't because they were in space. Trust me!

Not my favorite of the series, but it had some pretty entertaining moments.

i sat slack mouth and glazed eyed through the entire mess .. hated every second of it..

My favorite of the series is a tie between 1 & 6. Both great flicks. Followed by Jason X.

Number 2 ist most scary .....

I couldn't even sit through it. But I am not a Friday the 13th fan in general. The only one I like is part VII, don't ask me why. I can't explain it.

I haven't even bothered to watch House of the Dead. I am sure I will see it eventually.

it is sort of a must see ... if nothing else just so you can sit an marvel at the thought that it was ever released ..

the Gate is one of the few movies that, no matter how many times I've seen it, if I'm flipping through the channels and it's on, I always stop. I actually have several like that. Ghoulies, Night Breed, C.H.U.D, Funhouse, and on and on and on. now that I think of it, it seems like ALL horror movies are guilty pleasures. it's like they're innately made that way.

All of those movie you just listed, I like. Yes, even The Gate.
And I love both Nightbreed and Funhouse. Nightbreed I own, so I watch it pretty regularly, but if I find Funhouse on late at night, I can't resist it.

I like The Blair Witch Project. Yes. I do.

More astoundingly, I like its sequel, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2. Actually, I didn't like it at all upon first viewing. Then, I watched it with director Joe Berlinger's commentary track, and I gained a whole new respect for the man and his film.

Tell me what a douche I am, but I will fight this to the end.

I admit to liking The Blair Witch Project.

I didn't like the sequel at all. In fact, I remember having a strong urge to throw something through my television screen. I was able to control the urge. But I only watched it the one time. It might have been my mood.:rolleyes:

I enjoyed "The Blair Witch Project" quite a bit. Only saw it the once, though. And I couldn't sleep for two or three days afterward, because it unnerved me thoroughly. I have always felt that if I watched it again, the first time viewing experience would be polluted; so I never bought or rented it.

I did find "The Curse of the Blair Witch" on VHS recently and bought that. It is an entertaining extension of the film's false mythology.

although i appreciate Blair Witch for what it acheived, i prefered the sequel.

For those that don't know:

The "powers that be" hired Joe Berlinger to make the Blair Witch sequel. Berlinger is one of the world's top documentary film makers. He is NOT a maker of major motion pictures.

Upon taking the job, he decided to go against what he thought the execs had in mind, which was probably another shaking camera in the woods. He, instead, opted to make a film that brought the "Blair Witch Hysteria" to attention.

The interviews at the beginning of the film are mostly actual townspeople talking about how people visit their town because of the first film, buy stupid things like rocks and sticks, and go romping through their cemetary. This became the basis for his film.

Gates of Hell (not sure what critics said about this).

How did I forget Funhouse? One of my favorites in this category. Sylvia Miles as the fortune teller was memorable, that's for sure. But then I liked her in The Sentinel, too. Phantasm, The Gate, Blair Witch 2-all favorites. How 'bout Alice Sweet Alice, Black Christmas...?

i didn't mind jason x but it was realy low in my opinoin, blair witch 2 was good but not good enough for a second viewing and house of the dead was shit.
