I think the birds that fly into the garden are a bit mental. I chucked out some stale sandwiches onto the lawn, and watched from the kitchen window, as the birds landed to feast upon the dry bread and fillings, whilst I was drinking a coffee.

It got me daydreaming and wondering, why don't they realise they're eating their own kind, on Sunday we had roast Turkey, and as usual the bones and carcase get chucked out on the lawn the following morning, and they happily peck and munch away, till the bones are stripped clean. Even though the turkey was cooked and a bit ragged after we'd carved and eaten it, it still was recognisable as a bird, infact a very big bird in the eyes of the average winged garden visitor.

Don't these things have instinct, to stay away from a dead cooked birds. If I chucked out some dead cooked garden birds, of their own species, I bet they wouldn't even attempt to land on the lawn, they'd stay away realising it was their own kind. A bird my cat killed and left on the lawn, stopped them coming in the garden.

Maybe they don't care for other species of bird, and see them as lunch, especially if they've been roasted with added flavourings and herbs

It's kind of like how I won't eat any other Irishmen.

Exactly! I eat enough potatoes and drink enough beer in a day that I don't need to taste while I'm enjoying my humans. ;)

and another time, when we were kids, we went to farm to see the animals and stuff, had chicken sandwiches and we thought it'd be funny to chuck bits of chicken into one of the turkey pens... the fuckin mad things started squabling over the scraps and pecked up the lot lol.

Just a few weeks ago I witnessed a hawk knock a bird out of a tree and proceed to dine on it. Survival of the fittest, I guess.
