Exorcist smexorist
Great movie, dont get me wrong. But for people who think of themselves as decent horror film fan, i can never agree when people say its the scariest film of all time.
Anybody with a few point? But lets just not start listing films we all think are scarier. |
What do you think is the scariest movie all time then??
|
To be totally honest...I dont like it much. There, I said it. Sure, it was a great movie, preformances were great, visuals were great...but after reading the book, it was a huge let down. Anyone who likews this really should read the book, it's infinatly better, in my personal opinion of course.

I've probably posted enough reasons that the Exorcist is the best horror movie of all time on this site to fill a doctorate thesis paper.
However, I can understand how people in the younger crowd (let's say 0 to 20 years) may think it's a bit passe. I contribute this to children today being raised by A.D.D.-geared television and movies. Not only that, but I feel that the impact of the movie is diluted by its terrible sequels ("part three is ok! blah blah blah") and by other movies that try and cash in on the "look out or that big bad ol debbil is gonna git ya" thing. And yes, I've read the book. It's good, but not "infinatly" better than the film. |

I think the ''if you're a real horror fan'' phrase gets used to much, I think it's safe to say that George Romero is a fan of horror what if he thinks The Exorcist is the scariest horror movie ever would you say he isn't a ''real horror fan'' |
Exorcist gets my vote for 2nd scariest of all times (Entity #1). I dont think its as good as the book either but what movie is? Tell you what Exorcist: Legion from 1990 was one of the the most underrated movies ive seen. Its visuals were pretty disturbing especially when the old woman was crawling on the celing. Brad Dourifs performance was masterful as well. Just keep away from Exorcist the Beginning...thats scary only when you put down 10 bucks to see it, which unfortunately I did.

I attribute a lot of what poeple say ("it is very scary") to attempts at being badasses. I have also found that most people who dont think it is scary like gory movies, not scary. Hellraiser isnt remotely scary once you get past the age of 12, it is gory as hell though. That isnt to say EVERYONE who doesnt find it scary falls into that category, but in my experience, the clear majority does. |

the exorcist strikes fear in the heart of people who believe in god and the devil.
it is everything they have been told to fear - in a movieng picture show larger than life. I dont share those beliefs so it never hit me on that level. There are a couple of other levels it works on for me though .. One - being a parent - your greatest fear is that something will happen to your child. Demonic possession isnt a possibility i believe in but trade that with a serious sickness of any kind. One day normal, next day your whole life has fallen apart. the other thing that was effective .. for the older generation is that the demographic of the movie going audience was a lot older at the time the exorcist came out... It was a film about adults, starring adults, for adults. Kids couldnt get in to see it. There were not a lot of mainstream horror films at the time - this one raised the bar. Well scripted, acted, directed, one of the most memorable and recognizable scores in movie history... Young kids who are jaded by the age of 10 these days wont find much to be afraid of .... besides - it doesn't star any of their slicker young movie idols ... i myself havent been afraid of a film for many many years .. but i'll take effective as a second choice any day.. |

I dont believe in the devil or god either, but the story is done well enough to make you buy it at the time.
Immersion in the story is A #1 in any movie. if you can let go of reality and become absorbed in the story, personal belief has no real effect. That is how it works for me anyway. |

this was well done in the exorcist |
If you want The Exorcist to look semi-good, then watch Amittyville Horror. After you watch that shit any movie will be great. Excorcist was alright seeing as how it was "supposed" to be true. Come to think of it htough, so was Amittyville Horror. Oh well.
|
My wife still gives me dirty looks whenever that movie is brought up. The first time she ever trie dot watch Amityville horror, i had just had a pot of coffee and some beer. I did a MST3K voiceover through the whole thing. She laughed at most of what i said, but i did really screw it up for her....
PLus, it is impossible for me to see Margot Kidder without making fun of her for being a nutcase. |

The Exorcist, upon its release in 1973, had such an effect on the audience that moviegoers threw-up, ran out, had nightmares so bad that it created stess for them during their waking hours affecting their normal everyday lives. The only movie that had this much effect on peoples lives was Jaws (creating a new fear of going into the water, causing businesses around beach areas to loose money). There is no other film in history that created such hystaria.
Remember, this movie is over 30 years old and alot of desensitation to the "younger generations" have happened since then. The fact still remains that it's still a movie, and had an effect on audiences, that that has never been duplicated...ever. |
there were a couple of other examples , albiet not horror ..
The Warriors - had gangs fighting in theatres American Grafitti - had people drag racing home from the show (i witnessed this first hand) The Village - had me wanting to kill someone. |
Creighton Duke.... what the fuck type of screen name is that...
I can't add anything important into this thread |
it's perfectly understandable why people thought it was scary as hell when the Exorcist was released the worst a movie had gotten was someone being stabbed in the shower and zombies and then outta nowhere a little girl is possessed by satan.
|
A little girl using an old woman's voice spouting "Your mother sucks cocks in hell, Karras!" and "Fuck her in the ass, you mother fucker..."
I dont think they will be showing it on tv any time soon. |

true but they came out only a handful of months apart and Last House on The Left wasn't getting any attention at first and was completely overshadowed by The Exorcist, alot of people didn't even know about Last House. |
Personally I don't even classify it as scary. I think its because i'm just 16 and i just seen it. I can see how it was scary in its time. But i thought it was boring, a couple cool scenes, but its not one of my favorites. I'm also not religous so it didn't have an impact on me that way either. I think after seeing everything i have, it kind of numbed my brain or something lol, maybe if i had been younger it might have scared me.
|
For me, it IS the scariest movie.
When I saw it as a child, I had nightmares and it became the source of all my fears. What makes it even scarier is the fact that Blatty based his book on actual events and actual cases of possession. When I saw the re-mastered "Version You've Never Seen" in the theaters 5 years ago, I was pleased to be scared all over again. |

This is the way I feel about this matter:
I'm 16 years old, and the Exorcist scared the living shit out of me...by far my pick for the scariest movie ever made...so I think that it goes like this: There are two catagories of scary movie effects. There's the "scare you over and over again until your voice is hoarse" kind and then there's the "disturbs you in a way so strong that you actually feel like vomiting...or crying...or seeking psychiatric help." And so The Exorcist was utterly disturbing...an innocent little girl, had never done anything to anybody in her life, and this happens to her, and she masterbates with a cross, and she talks about sukcing cock and whatnot...this, to me, is why it was the scariest movie of all time. In my opinion, of course... |

This is, IMO, the scariest f'n film of all time! Wanna know why? Of course u do. Because it's based on a true story (even though I heard the book is better) and I can never look at a picture of Linda Blair the same way ever again without getting goosebumps. *looks at pic of Blair and shudders* Sure, the sequels sucked on so many levels (especially Beginning), but this is, without a doubt, the scariest movie ever made! In my opinion, anyway.
