Should we torture serious criminals? "Serious" criminals including, but not limited to; multiple murders, mass murderers, and some special cases. These are considered very serious offenses around the world.

Lethal injection is painless, it's just a needle. I almost enjoy having a needle stuck in my arm. (I don't inject anything) Wouldn't you be less likely to commit a serious crime if the punishment was slow and excruciating? I mean I think a killler should get away with the needle, but I think some cases deserve a little suffering...

Doesn't it make sense to torture them to set an example for those who would commit crimes in the future? Do you think it's wrong to torture anybody, even mass murderers?

No. Torturing or executing people won't stop crime. What's needed is rehabilitation and prevention. Capital punishment is bringing us back to the fucking dark ages.

If there's a certain amount of concrete evidence that they did it, do to them what they did. Guy rapes 47 people, have 47 different people rape him, etc. But mix it up a bit. Have every 10th person be a clown

They shouldn't be sentenced to death in the first place. I think that saditistic punishment/torture of criminals would would lead to a lot of bad repocusions and create a horribly bloodthirsty society which in turn will create a more vicious and sadistic criminal.

Yeh I can see you point in regard to the victim's family because when you have lost someone close to you you'd want to exact justice in the most horrible ways. But it still doesn't make it right and in the end you just sinking down to the level of the criminal.
And yeh there are lot of criminals that probably cannot be rehabilitated but I like to believe that they can be under the right treatment and circumstances but society doesn't have the money to spend on this so it won't happen. Perhaps there should be more preventative measures taken for those at risk of becoming an offender but so many people slip through the gaps and go unoticed and untreated. It's a fucked up world we live in but hopefully steps will be taken to make it a more positive/safer place but I guess that won't happen to till people's attitudes/prejudices change. But yeh what the fuck do I know when it comes down to it and what have I done to change anything.

we dont have unlimited cash, were in mad debt, esp now due to the war. look at all the cuts education is getting for example, when it is mUCH cheaper to house someone in jail the rest of their life (25 yeras in prison $500,000 vs. capital punishment 2.1 Million).

The death penalty does act as a deterrent to some people. The fear of getting raped is all some others need. Everyone is different, so different punishments have different effects. Does it stop all of them? Obviously not.

Some criminals can be rehibilitated, but anyone who commits a pathological crime cant be. Child molesters, serial killers, serial rapists, people who commit crimes for the sheer thrill of it... Most of those people are sociopaths. The groundwork for being a good person does not exist in those people.

Torture is degrading to everybody involved, not to mention the fact that it violates international law and reduces us to the level of countries that we condemn for human rights abuses.

I do believe in some kind of retribution though, and I do believe in capital punishment. No, I don't think it deters anybody. But there are a lot of people out there who are beyond rehabilitation of any type. They're not sick. They know exactly what they're doing - they just don't care. Those people simply deserve to die. No need to make the process overly complicated or painful - just shoot them.

While I partially agree with you on the basis of degradation I still cant help but feel that certain practices no matter how brutal can be used to extract information needed to save others, however as I said in a previous post, I dont feel it has any merit after 24 hours. Take Iraq for instance, I found it deplorable and dishonorable that the "soldiers" regardless of whom they took their orders from were acting with immaturity and ignorance and should pay for their actions. BUT, I only feel that way because those prisoners had already been processed and those soldiers were there for "baby sitting" purposes only. Its during the first 24 hours before those involved can make changes, and other plans that the information extracted through means of torture will be most viable, after that, its second hand, and totally useless. The insurgents are fighting "their war" they know the game far better than we do. I see no point in trying to get someone to give up information that is of no use. Its like beating them to find out what they had for dinner yesterday. Who cares, move on and get your info elsewhere.

i understand and want to agree with those that are opposed to it
but i see it as a difference between what is right and what is just.

no it is never right to take another life ... but sometimes it is just.

Decapitation worked really well for a long time, and there is no chance that the person will live through it or have a long agaonizing death.

And not to beat a dead horse, but Capital punishment is not for deterrance, it is for punishment. it is taking out the garbage.

Giving a sociopath another chance is simply giving them another chance to offend, plain and simple.

People admit to murders the didn't commit all the time. I don't agree with some of the ways they get their information. A confession made while being interrogated shouldn't be worth anything imo.

i have never seen any satisfactory evidence of this. I have heard the argument more times than i can count, but have never seen it backed up with a shred of evidence.

I've worked at the Indiana Dept of Correction for over 18 years. I know you will all think I'm biased, but nothing works! You have a few who do turn their lives around, but they are very few, and very far between...and I'm talking about all degrees and types of crimes. As a Lieutenant, I've never worked the Death Squad, but I have worked security at an execution. The executin itself may be painless, (injection) but the time leading up to the actual execution is anything but painless. I still support capital punishment though.
